Just did a comparison of HwangIM funds against their (close) peers:

Hwang Asia Quantum
vs
Eastspring Small Cap
RHB-OSK Emerging Opportunity
RHB-OSK Small Cap

Hwang Select Opportunity
vs
RHB-OSK Equity Trust
Eastspring Equity Income
Kenanga Growth

HUGE underperformance shakehead.gif

Time to start switching?
Or time to start cursing?

It's been like that for 2 months? Started with Aiiman growth.... Was there a change in the CIO that we are not aware of?

Teng Chee Wai is still head, the MD after the merger of Affin and HwangIM

David Ng is still the CIO

I see no changes:

Maybe weak Hang Seng dragging down HwangIM funds since they're all quite heavy on HK on their offshore portion hmm.gif

Hwang's style is alpha chasing Fund House. That is their style. Hence when market good... supra return and vice-versa.

BTW, this has been a suckish month for equity. All are down, no region is safe except India and Indonesia.

Those who have exposure to ASEAN centric fund will be spared. Those who invested in India thorugh Manulife-MAAKL will reap benefit, but I doubt many whould have overweight on Indonesia and India.

So, hang in there, the Risk:Reward Ratio are still intact. Ride it out baby, ride it out.

But, how will that explain their underperformance against their (close) peers? rclxub.gif

The only close peer is Dynamite fund. Dynamite is a runaway success recently. Maybe they made some very good calls. Such things happens...

The rest of the Asia-Pac xJp also tanked. Dynamite is the only exception.

3Q 2014 Top And Bottom Equity Funds: Malaysia Small Caps Lead The Way Once Again

MARKET PERFORMANCE IN 3Q 2014

Increased geopolitical tensions in Russia-Ukraine and Middle East, an Ebola outbreak in West Africa, a dampened economic outlook in Asia (particularly for China and Japan) and stagnating economies in Europe have been the hot headlines in 3Q 2014, with these factors continuing to weigh on investor sentiment. Global equities (as represented by MSCI AC World Index) saw a sluggish performance over the quarter, delivering a tepid return of 0.03%. Europe equities saw a -4.86% decline in 3Q 2014 amid the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the continued struggle against a deflationary environment and sluggish growth in the region. Emerging Markets (as represented by MSCI Emerging Markets Index) also followed suit with a -1.21% decline over the quarter while Asia ex Japan (as represented by MSCI Asia Ex-Japan Index) delivered a positive return of 0.64%.

The Malaysia equity market (as represented by FBM KLCI Index, which comprises the largest 30 companies by market capitalization), ended the quarter with a negative return of -1.03% while the small to medium-cap segment (as represented by FBM Small Cap Index) rose by 4.75% in 3Q 2014.
