errr, hi guys, need your help/opinion here..
today i did an engine bay wash again, on my family car AE101. the engine is like this:
user posted image

after the final rinsing, i used 2 hair dryer to blow dry. after like 10-15mins of blowing, it seems like everything is dried already. so i proceed to start the engine. engine start-up fine, no problem. so i just let it run for 5-10 mins like that to warm up the engine.

BUT to my horror cry.gif cry.gif cry.gif after like 5-6 mins of normal running, the engine shuts off by itself! and i've been unable to restart my engine since cry.gif cry.gif cry.gif any ideas which part possibly needs engine running 5 mins (vibration, etc) for the water to ingress??? cry.gif cry.gif

after the success of the first time engine wash on the other car, today is a disaster for me cry.gif cry.gif any help/advice/opinion is very much appreciated.

Covered is one thing....when there is temp different between the OUTER and INNER of distributor it will create WAP air....

user posted image

My advice is open it up (usually 2 screw), CHECK is there any WAP air inside...you may spotted corrosion in it

user posted image

Clean them up with a screw driver.....and mist the whole cap inner part with WD40 and screw it back.....

* TRY NOT TO unplug the plug cable from the cap when you remove to avoid you mess up the sequence....
*
my case is confirmed distributor problem.. my foreman swapped the distributor and the engine can start up fine. so i just bought the distributor (2nd hand). heavy price for my engine cleaning lesson cry.gif need to wrap the whole damn distributor and not just the plug cap area as i did.

by the time i read your advise on opening up the distributor and spray with WD40 (or contact cleaner better?), i've already changed the distributor. so.. now i got a possible saveable denso distributor laying around for my experiment and learning..

btw, already a few days didn't check-in in this thread, looks like everyone is onto sealant/coating blink.gif unsure.gif

did some head lamp polishing using tooth paste (the thing you brush your teeth with) and PG Polishing Cloth. i got to say the result is quite good!! and its only tooth paste!

The rest of the photo here. https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/11285589...171165641593169

anyway, i still hope i can improve the result (ie making the head lamp looks absolutely clear and brand new), especially on that corolla. so i guess i need a heavier weapon? i'm thinking of a small polishing pad/ball that you can mount on a standard drill one... anyone knows where to get those cheap? or get similar function item?? and also should i get the fine grade sand paper to hand-sand it? can i remove the hand-sanding marks afterwards if i don't have a machine polisher?

those headlamp restoration kit is normally in the league of RM 150 or more...

been so long didn't visit this thread.. still alive and kicking lols

just wanna pop some questions for Quazacolt.. its not really detailing related but, its originating from photos which you posted here.. so..

i see that you're using Insulflex, you tied it on the hood stand, can i know why? to reduce vibration? also seen you wrapping (tying) it on the aircon hoses for insulation purpose i suppose. did the aircond cools better?

i'm asking this because in my recent research on noise insulation/proofing, i came across this Insulflex material. it is supposed designed for heat insulation, but some ppl sold it as sound proofing material. since i saw you using it, so just wanna ask you how you reckon this Insulflex material as heat insulation, and or sound insulation.

my main interest is insulating the noise from engine bay. so i plan to stick sound proof material on the outside of the firewall, meaning in the engine bay (or at least upper half of engine bay, depends on how well my cutting is and how small my hand can slip through those hoses, etc attachment on the firewall) so right now i'm searching for this kind of material, buy one roll, hopefully can have enough to stick on firewall (outside), engine hood, maybe firewall (inside). but then will this material retain a lot of water? i also scare that it will retain water for a long period of time and may or may not promote faster rusting on my firewall?? lol its my current project.

and btw..

Just wanna share my recent headlamp restoration weekend project. Method is wet sanding:
1 - wet sanding with 600 grit sandpaper
2 - wet sanding with 1200 grit sandpaper
3 - wet sanding with 2000 grit sandpaper
4 - wet sanding with 3000 grit sandpaper
5 - polish with Colgate toothpaste with an old PG polish cloth
6 - finally, polish with Meg's Ultimate Polish with PG polish cloth
7 - added a layer of Meg Ultimate wax

i didn't use any headlamp / UV protective type of clear coating in the end.. so i'm not sure if the yellowish will return soon or not. but at least i'm very happy with the current result. tongue.gif tongue.gif

not specifically the ac condenser, however when i clean the engine bay i will spray degreaser on the condenser/radiator fins as well since the majority of dirt they will get are exhaust/carbon etc from other vehicles/on the road.

I was thinking of something more like the one in the video. there's so much foam!
