75 mil for Di Maria? wow....

he's a good player... but 75 mil?

Anyway.. the team to beat now is Chelsea.. Costa is their missing piece last season.
*
Chelsea is the hot favourite for the title.

Fabregas and Costa are the marquee signing that missing last season. Remember last year, even without any prolific striker, Chelsea is not far away from title challenge.

QUOTE(melt @ Aug 25 2014, 02:21 PM)
I dont know if he the one who we should blame at first Steerling was guarding Clyne. Clyne pass and drift to the middle where Lucas is there. Steerling didnt keep track on Clyne. Johnson were behind Steerling guarding on the left side.

A trick pass over Lovren and Clyne were through. Johnson were running but it was too late.

Defended properly you said? I dont see the fault should be solely blame on him itself for the first goal.
*
my view,
Although, it is joint effort to defend properly,
Lucas should share the most responsibility of not tracking Clyne run when he run passed in front of him that a DM should able to spot opponent dangerous overlapping run.

When someone make overlapping run, midfielder especially DM should be tracking, but on the goal scored incident, we can see ball watching instead. doh.gif

I got the feeling BR will field a surprising attacking line up

depend of who is the opponent in the first round. if basel, then we are licking our chopstick la. To get out of group of death is already a good achievement, it also will boost up team morale and spirit to go further and hope for better display next year.
*
I don't expect to go through the group stage as well.

This is the first taste of CL matches by BR as manager, right?

Even with Mancity with many big name players, still fail to go through the group stage when first time in CL.

Nowadays a lot of website design is meant to cater Ipad/tablet surfing, or "big block" type layout, really not surfing friendly for PC users.

Scoreline also need to find thoroughly before can click, news scattered everywhere, don't know which is new or old as well, not sequence.

Same with a lot of other news portal.

I keep hearing again and again argument that we managed to challenge for title last season due to not having European football.. and we can focus on EPL... how valid is this claim...
*
There is some truth, but the actual fact the team outperformed and overachieved last season.

As by the logic above, if Liv crash out CL early as well as FA cup, then means manage to challenge for title this season? laugh.gif

You never know in football. Stranger things have happened. Borini took a massive gamble to stay and fight for a place in a crowded Liverpool team. It looks like he may well get his chance sooner  than he may expected. I hope he grabs this chance and prove us all wrong - it's a win win situation biggrin.gif
*
I don't think Borini is going to start, there are still Balo, Lambert.

Somemore Sterling can make shift for striker role, and Markovic/Lallana slot in the midfield.

QUOTE(RedSiglap56 @ Sep 6 2014, 02:52 PM)
Sturridge's injury could well be a blessing in disguise. He hasn't been in his goalscoring form and this forced rest will give him time to reflect and, hopefully, regain his scoring touch.

We now have a couple of true attacking midfielders in Markovic and Lallana, and the latter especially has a nose for goal. So BR has options other than his reserve strikers. He could either renew the Lallana-Lambert partnership or try out the Markovic-Balo combo.

I am one of those who believe that any good team must be built from a solid defence. We arguably have the most solid CB pairing in Skrtle-Lovren. The Terry-Cahill partnership is bolstered by Ivanovic and that's why Chelsea are the early favourites this time.

As for manure, I have a feeling LVG may make a bigger mess notwithstanding the staggering amount of money being poured in. Just look at their defence or..what defence?
*
Since when Liv has "solid" defence under BR? laugh.gif

Its weird isn't it when he can play well with France, but when he's with Liverpool, he is shaky, took so much time holding the ball, and commit mistakes. Hope he can gain confidence when play for us, and build a chemistry with Lovren, and the full backs.
*
International match pace and physical attribute may not the same with EPL.

In fact, for me, international match is quite boring to watch and a lot of time, I always felt asleep when watching international matches. laugh.gif

While in EPL, it is like fast and furious, whereby you don't have sweet time to think about it, hold the ball, look around, before opponent players already come and pressing or chance had gone.
There is a reason, why many people love to watch EPL.

I don't know why talking about Sterling replacement when Sterling is not injured and currently on form. rclxub.gif
Somemore Sterling is 19, not 29.

So I cannot brain, why there is talk on replacement issue when the player is fit, on form and aged 19.

Somemore, there is no midweek match, there is nearly a full week rest between England match until next Liv match.

Chelsea added quality, while Liv added quantity... sweat.gif

Based on stat, 75% possession, 1 shot on target, not good enough.
Clearly, Liv miss SAS combination.

QUOTE(hfi @ Sep 14 2014, 04:24 PM)
We can play 433. Go back to last season when Gerrard and Sturridge got injured - we had Allen, Lucas and Hendo in midfield. We played extremely well against Chelsea and City, won against Spurs, Hull, Fulham etc .. that was all 433 until we had Sturridge from injury. Even then we didn't always play diamond with SaS in the team - sometimes we started with 433 other times diamond.

For me the 4 key players of last season were Suarez, Sturridge, Sterling and Coutinho. Hendo was important in terms of workrate as was Gerrard with his dead ball deliveries, but those 4 players were our main attacking threat. Yesterday we only one of them started against Villa and he didn't have the best of game. The new arrivals are all good players but unlike last season, they haven't gelled enough to play well together where as the team we had last season had played together for at least a year.
*
Costa come from AM, Fabregas come from Barca, yet, they clicked well, and know the "football common language". Can't gel is always good excuse to use, but I don't buy this excuse especially with professional footballer, who earn ten of thousand per week wages and has been playing at top footballer league for years.

They are not playing on first day they meet. There was pre-season training, until now about 2 months training already, so with common "football language", performance may not top notch and slick, but some understanding of basic football language should be there.

Every team always added, replaced players every year or every few years, change personnel in between, so every team also not "gel" and play not well? tongue.gif

There is a worry this season as there will be lot of scrutiny on the new recruit with plenty spending made.

So far,
4 matches played, only 1 match seems good enough, the first match against Soton, was more and less an ugly win match actually.

BR is honest with the post match comment

QUOTE(Cloud0890 @ Sep 15 2014, 09:23 PM)
Brendan Rodgers has admitted that his Liverpool side must improve at the back in the wake of their 1-0 defeat at home to Aston Villa on Saturday.

The Liverpool manager was highly critical of the defending which allowed Gabriel Agbonlahor to score Villa's ninth-minute winner and called on his defenders to go back to basics to shut out opponents.

"It's still a problem," Rodgers said. "We have to defend better, that's where it starts. Just defend, don't try and be clever. Don't try and play, just defend and don't let them have the set-piece in the first place. Then when the ball comes in the box we lose the first duel. They could have scored more from set-pieces, too -- [Philippe] Senderos had a free header.

"Look at the last game against Spurs. We defended really well and they're a much bigger side. We need to be on the front foot more. We need everyone to defend in the box and that's something we have to be comfortable with."

Rodgers was critical of new arrival Dejan Lovren, who moved to Anfield from Southampton for 20 million pounds this summer. The defender was slow to react as Senderos ran across him at a corner, with Agbonlahor pouncing on the subsequent loose ball to fire Villa into the lead.

"I think you see from the goal that we need that consistency," Rodgers said. "They lost their markers too easily in the box. When you let the opponent get the first contact that's what can happen.

"Lovren is a wonderful defender, strong and aggressive, but we have to do better in that situation. The worst-case scenario should be that when we have days when we're not creative with the ball, then we get a point and move on."
*
This is one of major worry.

Until now, Liv struggled to replace Carra, last ditch tackle, block, challenge that prevent opponent goal scoring opportunity.

The 20 mil until now doesn't seem a good deal. sweat.gif

QUOTE(7chai @ Sep 15 2014, 11:33 PM)
well, sometimes you cant expect things too over. What I can say is players comes to new environment alot of things they need to start back from ground zero, which includes their confidence, mindset and also mental strength. As for Liverpool this year i still don't expect them for title chase because alot of players are new, to grind into the team need multiple efforts. Of course is only 4th games of this season, alot of surprise still waiting behind.
*
Again I don't buy this, new players need time to gel, new environment, need to adapt etc. smile.gif

You don't pay top money 20~30 mil to buy a player, ten of thousand per week, then give the reason, they need time to gel and cannot adapt the new environment.

If they are youngster or come with relative cheap price tag and lower wages, may be justified.

Eg. you are running a company and hiring employee.
If hiring a fresh graduate with 2k per month wages, ok they are new, need time to adapt and learn, can't expect too much, fair enough.

But if you are hiring a experienced employee that draw 20k per month wages, you still expect they need time to learn and adapt when coming?
You only pay top money to an employee, if you expect them to contribute straight away when coming.

Somemore they are established professional footballer.

Lovren almost scored yesterday and had game defining moments against Tottenham. If the offensive line had sscored 2 goals we wouldn't be talking about this too much
*
Scored 2 goals?

If Guzan was at "god mode" like, had been busy blocking shot, making acrobatic save, goal line clearance, ok, one of those day, but the entire match against Villa just had 1 shot on target.... sweat.gif

4 matches until now, only 1 match looks good (against Spurs), other 3 quite poor (even the match win against Soton). Defence look nowhere solid, even spending few ten million to change personnel.

Cannot expect offensive line to bail out the team each time.

QUOTE(8sg9ft @ Sep 17 2014, 04:41 PM)
I wonder what has happened to Coutinho lately. Since pre-season ended he hasn't shone as much as we know he can.
*
Preseason, you have sweet time to pass the ball, and opponent is slow to close down and pace is slower as intention just to build up fitness.

In EPL and competitive match, you don't have those luxury.

Coutinho tends to flourish when being given space and time by opponent, aka opponent play open game and attack you, and doesn't adopt man mark strategy.
But when opponent park the bus, closing down fast, pressing a lot, the effectiveness gone and a lot of time losing the ball under pressure...
This is my observation.
