I'm keeping an eye on the sous vide scene too. I have to say these devices are quite expensive and none of them are officially available in Malaysia just yet.

Interestingly enough, a pair of Malaysians created a budget solution that integrates with either your rice cooker or slow cooker to simulate sous vide. You might have heard of them before. They were feature in The Star about a year ago.

The device is not out yet but they have said they will eventually make it available in Asia on release.

No review on it yet so not sure how good it might be but I have some concerns about it not having a circulator for the water since its merely a power plug control.

I started sous vide with a pair of ica kitchen circulators. They were kickass but reliability was sh*t, and each of the pair I bought died within 6 months of not-very-frequent use. Worst was although the units were covered by warranty, it was US warranty and I would have to pay both ways (!!!) shipping so I said f*ck it.

These Anova's are supposedly a lot newer and more reliable ... even Kenji from Serious Eats marked stamp of approval liao. I would say it would be a good buy IF you are willing to risk the no local warranty bit.

For my part I decided to go with a local warranty (in SG) box, the sous vide supreme.

about sgd490 i.e. rm1250.
undoubtedly the anova is cheaper - including shipping and tub you're looking at just rm900-ish - and would cook the food just as good. But for me I rather pay the extra for the safety of local warranty.

I've ordered one of the Anova units , will let you know how I get on

I've got a Watt meter too ,so can work out the power consumption / cost from there.

I've got one of them; power usage is negligible i would say. But i'm not using a monitor. End result: I don't eat in any steakhouses anymore as i don't see why i should pay for something i can cook better with a cheaper piece of meat (and i'm already buying premium meat)...

Where do you buy your meat, steaks specifically?

BTW, Anova have $50 discount now .. few days after I ordered sad.gif

It seems they won't honour a lower price, but US customers can return for a refund and then order again (shipping from Malaysia both ways of course is way more than $70!)

Well; I've not tried $$$ top-notch beef from other countries but I normally get premium Entrecote cuts from local sources (i live in EU). Costs about RM35 for a 400-500g cut.

Enjoy the new unit; I bought mine last year and it's not as high tech as the new ones...

Selling at RM1,100 only all in inclusive shipping and customs tax. Warranty directly with Anova though need to ship back to them if anything goes wrong, however its been awesome so far.

PM me if interested!

*Note: I am not profiting even a single dollar so please dont ask me for a discount, its gonna cost you the same or more to ship it in yourself.

I wonder if you all aware that ANOVA is 0% excise duty. You only need to pay GST and handling fees to the courier.
Because my friend bought and he was charged for 20% exercise duty but for my case, I told the courier that is should fall under immersion heater and it is 0% excise duty.

Power consumption I can't comment - never actually tested it in the end

Still use it frequently for cooking meats (steak mostly). Eggs were fun to experiment for a while but no one wants to wait 45 min to make eggs for breakfast !
