Your mi3 dented ? You don't have case ? How about the screen, intact ? blink.gif
*
I think it chip off the plastic somewhat.

This is the point of the impact. Being at the back of the phone, screen was intact. I think my bro's wife must have dropped hers at an acute angle to have her screen shattered.

There are couple of dents, and lots of holes (with paint still intact) the size of sand particles.

I think I will continue using it naked. Pretty satisfied with the durability. My friend just couldnt stand me throwing my Mi3 around. Hahahaha... this is one of the most durable phone I ever used.

Mm...Before I use the inbuilt adapt sound in S4 that automatically fine tune the iem, Piston does not sound very good on S4. However after that, its superb like what I've mentioned. Not the best with its weakness but very good for its price and all around performance.

Bass is not too strong nor weak (tho my sony IEM is much stronger and cleaner), its just right for average leisure listening that I'm currently using it for my mobile usage (taking it everywhere in my bag). I personally like it quite a bit tho its not as good as the other 2 more expensive IEM in their respective strength.

Maybe you just got different expectation and taste in the audio quality that this IEM is just not suited to your ears. As for refinement, ya, actually my 2 other IEM is better in their respective listening pleasure, ie the bassy one for more rock like music and the BA IEM for instrumental and those music that don't have need bass to begin with.

I think it sounded much better on my Note2 and Nexus10 than it does with Mi3, which adds to the disappointment perhaps. Im using the phone with the worse headphone out.

Maybe it all comes down to codes, imbuilt software, codex and hardware that is why Xiaomi can go very affordable. They might have skimp out somewhere and this might be it.

In fact I was quite surprised that it was using the same chip as iPhone5 for its audio DAC. iPhone 5 was way louder and sounds better too.

Testing Piston2 with iPhone5 is really not bad. Those K Pop annoying high pitch vocals are being tamed with Piston2 due to its slight roll off at higher frequency, and the music become quite enjoyable. Not a Kpop fan though. Just happened to be testing it with my cousin's iPhone5 and he only had Hi-Res Kpop MV.

I went to Philips warehouse sale earlier this year in KLCC. When wanna test Philips headphone, I can't hear anything at all. Then the sales guy noticed the Mi3 and kindly lend me his fiio E11. Then only able to hear something, but even that was too soft for my taste.

@andrekua:

Good active studio monitors have an EQ built into the speaker. And for my speakers there's an accessory that is specially designed for the speaker to make the sound even flatter than it already is... 41-20000 Hz at -3dB, from relatively small bookshelf speakers. thumbup.gif It's put between source and amplifier (actually should be between pre-amp and amp, but that's too fancy for my budget), and it really works.

In theory Xiaomi has done the same, in practice somewhere along the way something went wrong.

As for being the most robust phone? I don't think it is anywhere near. I have a Motorola A925... the screen (plastic) was recessed by something like 5mm! That thing was impossible to kill, though I really tried (I got angry with it... a lot, but smashing it into the wall etc. couldn't hurt it). My HTC Magic too was impossible to kill. Parts are missing from the back, the back is cracked, paint is missing everywhere, the phone dropped countless times, on concrete, asphalt, tiles, even down some stairs (tiles), all without a casing and without a screen protector. There are no scratches on the screen, let alone a crack. They just knew how to design phones back then!

In terms of form factor maybe my favorite phone ever. All the necessary buttons, a nice cursor, nice to hold, and because of that curve the glass screen could never ever touch the ground.

Probably not good enough.

My Edifier S2000 has a bypass function to bypass the Bass/Treble altogether.

Is the screen easily scratchsince u use it naked ?  No temper glass protection too...

I also plan to use it naked....(I heard back cover slippery)
*
Hairline scratches? I can see a couple of them.

Personally I rarely use screen protector unless it has a stylus like Note. Our hand wont be able to scratch it, nor will your pen, pencil, or anything that is not harder than the screen, or have a sharp and tiny surface area.

I never tried on my Note2 nor Mi3 but I did try out on my Note1. Pen is ok, keys too. The only thing that is not ok is those tiny particle. I accidentally pick the wrong test subject which is a semi rust nail. At first, it didnt scratch (those tiny tiny lines dont count). And then I ran it the opposite direction which has the rust and it made a physical scratch. A pretty long one, around 60-65mm. It can be felt when running your fingernail over it.

I dont know about you, but unless its a RM2k phone, I dont really bother applying SP and spoil the view.

I did have SP on my S2 because its my first RM2k phone, but other than the Note2, I never really had SP ever.

My list of gadgets without SP:-

Nokia 808, iPad 2&4, Nexus 10, Acer W4, Mi3, Note.

Also never had SP on some gadget that Nokia gave me last time, namely N8, E6, C6.

Personally I can accept them. Not really noticeable.

hello guys..
just broke my s2 so i need new phone.

a few question please.
-what will i miss from samsung if i buy this phone? from samsung s2 to mi3

planning to get used s4, some of s4 features, air gesture, the waving etc looks cool
but someone pointed mi3 to me in the recommendation thread.

-does mi3 availability like mainstream brand?
i need it by this week if possible.

use mainly, instagram, whatsapp, 9gag, and navigation.

thank you very much
*
Actually if you really like Samsung S-function, then I guess you get S4.

Mi3 is rather plain, boring looking Android that designed to be minimal but perform like a beast.

Other things you probably misses are custom rom, better audio quality, amoled screen, sd card slot, exchanging battery, and some other things that I may well missed out.

What's with the hooos haaaas with Antutu?

Antutu just blew up the scores with each updated version. It didn't make the phone any faster.

but I do feel noticeable difference on my piston after 48 hours of burn in.  hmm.gif

I even let my friends to try on two different set of piston (1 burned, 1 new) without telling them which is which.

Everyone agree that the Burn In one sounds better.
*
I would say its a combination of mass manufacturing and human brain.

Its just like ABX. Even if you were consistently picking out the differences, thats because you are expecting and paying more attention to pick up the differences. Each time you pick up that difference, then you repeat the process and expect something there. When its not there, then you feel the difference.

Most of the time, its all in your brain unfortunately.

But we've already knows of your sentiment and extreme disappointment with Piston, so you no need to say anything also we know lar.. tongue.gif

Anyway, these past 1 week, I've been using Piston extensively on my S4. It does sound great for its price that actually sounds good on wider range of music vs my XBA (clear sound, no bass) and RM199 dynamic driver (good bass, sound not as sharp). It has become my de facto IEM rather than the other 2 (good for their specific types of music but weaker the rest). Have to admit, part of it, its the price, cheap thus can take it all over, if spoil also can replace easily.

Notice it getting better but also notice the placement of the IEM earpad is more tight now with more comfortable angle (found the right spot), that makes the IEM much more enjoyable. Still weak on high end sound (cracking a bit) but overall, its good. I do notice that music produced from my S4 via ttpod somehow sounds so much better than the ttpod (with same setting) from MI3.
*
You find it sound sharp? Hmmm...

To me, they really try to sound like speaker. Therefore, you can sort of feel the vocals, unlike what you normally hear from a headphone/IEM. It is sounding exactly like what Im getting from my Edifier S2000. Its pretty bright too, like sparkles when you turn the speakers loud.

Try listening again, with your xba or dynamic drivers. You really feel Piston2 sounds sharp? Just listen to the vocals.

QUOTE(Cavino @ Sep 2 2014, 07:24 PM)
Not as sharp and clear as XBA lar but sharp enuf to enjoy the vocals (not clean like XBA tho).

Both of my other IEM are noticeably better in their respective field but as mentioned, at this price, both of them have their weakness (meanings not balance enuf for both clarity and bass). For layman ears (not audiophile), Piston sound sharp enuf, adequately clear (not those superb clear lar).

Ya, its "bright" with "sparkles" or should I say "breaking" when turning it loud. So at high range, it's quite bad but at mid range and low end, not bad and covers a wide range of music adequately.

Maybe my ears and tasted in IEM is not that particular sensitive, but keep thinking at RM50, its giving me the best bang for bucks for the balance of audio and bass it produced. Currently I prefer it over my other 2 IEM unless I specifically listen to a whole range of certain types of music only (ie...instrumental ->xba)..
*
The sound is fun, because it sounds very lively... almost speaker-like.

Honestly it sounds the same to me when I compared them when I first tested Malaysian version. I did not compare it for long before I chunk the china version back into the chocolate smelling box.

Wonder is it placebo effect for those that think both version sounds differently?

I would be surprised if they sounded different.

But I think v2 might sound different if that's what you have. It's rated at 13ohm vs 16ohm for the current v2.1

If you are having reception problem with Maxis, Im not surprised. After all, Maxis upgrading 1800MHz to support LTE instead of building new infrastructure with 2600MHz.

Today I just took the plunge again with DiGi after 3 years. 3 years ago, Maxis rules... but not so today.

I swapped both sim for a go in my Note2 and Mi3.

Note2:

Maxis - 1.x Mbps
DiGi - 3.99Mbps

Mi3:

Maxis 4.x Mbps
DiGi - 8.x Mbps

Not to mention DiGi consistent upload in the upper 1.5-1.6 Mbps compared to a sucky 0.4Mbps for Maxis. I think I will switch everything out of Maxis.
