Lewis Hamilton, McLaren (2nd, 1m 27.373s):
"That was a good qualifying session for me. We had been fast in practice so we were quite optimistic. In the first two qualifying sessions I struggled a little bit to get the most out of the tyres but then it all came together on my final lap. The team have done a fantastic job working hard over the summer break to continue to bring developments to the car and it shows in the fact that we have been very competitive here all weekend. I think that we will have a good race tomorrow."

Fernando Alonso, McLaren (4th, 1m 27.574s):

"I am happy with my qualifying today. I made the decision to go out on prime Bridgestone Potenza's for my final flying lap, but I do not think this was the wrong decision. That final lap was actually quite stressful as our planned timing was for me to run at the very end of the session with only a couple of seconds left to cross the line. Then I was stuck in traffic, so all these factors probably played a role in me not improving my lap time and coming fourth today. However I think it will be a very exciting race and I am feeling confident as it is possible to overtake at this circuit. I think we have a good strategy, and the car will be strong in the race."

QUOTE(bearbear @ Aug 27 2007, 09:02 PM)
If Kimi/Massa win the remaining 5 races and Hamilton get 2nd for that 5 races, Hamilton will win.

Kimi/Massa - 5x10 = 50 pts
Hamilton - 5x8 = 40 pts

They can only pull back 10 pts but Hamilton's lead over the Ferrari duo is more than that, and if it's Alonso who will the remainin 5 races he'll be the champion.

so both McLaren just need finish the race in the podium in order to get WCC and WDC icon_rolleyes.gif

McLaren fined over use of untested gearbox

McLaren have been fined by stewards at Monza for running a new lightweight gearbox that had not been crash tested in last month's Hungarian Grand Prix.

McLaren did not feel the modifications were sufficient to warrant a new crash test and hence only notified the FIA of changes on the Thursday of the Hungaroring meeting. Exact details of the gearbox revisions were supplied after the event and the structure was subsequently tested successfully.

However, while stewards accepted that McLaren's cars had been legal at all times, they felt that the changes had been significant and that the team could - and should - have notified the FIA far earlier, in time for the new gearbox to be crash tested prior to the race.

"By delaying the supply of information to the FIA (which could have been supplied on completion of the modification to the gearboxes during the week commencing Monday 16th July), McLaren deprived the FIA of the opportunity to consider the changes made and require impact testing to be carried out before use," said the stewards.

"Had such information been imparted in due time the tests could have been satisfactorily completed prior to the Hungarian Grand Prix such that their use would have been without criticism."

The stewards thus found McLaren to have broken Article 16.1.2 of the technical regulations, which states that "any significant modification introduced into any of the structures tested shall require that part to pass a further test."

This, combined with McLaren's failure to disclose the changes in time to allow for a new test, prompted the stewards to fine the team US$50,000.

Alonso ready to race as focus switches from Paris to Spa

The $100m fine imposed on McLaren by the World Motor Sport Council, and the cancellation of all the team's points in the 2007 world championship for constructors, was the sole talking point at Spa yesterday, when it finally filtered down around 7pm.

And throughout the afternoon, world champion Fernando Alonso steadfastly refused to be drawn on his feelings about what was happening in Paris even though, at one stage, he had no idea whether he really would be able to compete this weekend.

"I'm not thinking about anything outside here in the paddock," he said, when he wasn't simply saying no comment. "I have a meeting with engineers now preparing the strategy for tomorrow, which tyres we are using in P1 and which in P2. I was checking the forecast for all weekend, the set-up, comparing the test we did in July, the updates that are on the car... So any more than this I am not ready to think. My 100 percent concentration will be in this paddock, in this track and on winning this race. Other than that I will not have even two seconds of thinking."

On the technical front, however, if on no other, McLaren feel optimistic after a very quick performance in the test here in July. As they did in Monza, they now intend to do their talking on the track.

"I think that for us, that test was just about tyres and about not much more than that. I think the chassis will be completely different, the aero package we are running now is completely different, the engine as well, so the car will be much much quicker this time."
