Perhentian only for angmoh. Over rated actually compare to redang. More nicer resorts in redang compare to backpacker al cheapo chalets wth sub par acc in perhentian. Nevertheless angmoh luv perhentian bcos the whole place full wth angmohs. Redang more asian

As stimix said, redang more asian, perhentian more ang moh.

Perhentian you can walk in choose your accommodation if no peak period, food sendiri cari as many restaurants along the beach. Redang mainly all sold in packages include food, ferry, accommodation, snorkeling trips by the hotel.

Redang resorts are better quality. Perhentian resorts more basic style.

Redang long beach has quite some happening stuffs at night, but Perhentian long beach is more happening. Perhentian has a few beaches, so you can choose which beach to stay. Redang has one main long beach and a few hotels on more secluded beaches.

Anyways, both Redang and Perhentian is very very different compared to Langkawi.

You want relaxing, go to Perhentian Besar island or go to one of those resorts with more secluded/private beach on Redang.

This is where I often stay the last time, and they don't dissapoint.
Cater to Singaporean travellers on a weekly basis, and iinm belongs to a Singaporean owner, so you can be sure that the standards are really high. Surprisingly, I find that the price isn't too expensive.
Food spread is really delicious, especially noon lunch.
Chalet is really nice, and has that local touch. Beds and chairs are mostly handmade out of wood and bamboos right behind their resort. Beach is amazing!
And its very nice to stroll along the beach where shops and houses and scuba centers are abundant. At the end of the walk, you have the jetty to hang out and just enjoy the breeze or watch the fishes clear as crystal under the water.
Night time is lively with local shops selling some burgers or ala-carte food at reasonable price. Expensive? Definitely not, just slightly by a few cents compared to mainland.
I can talk all day about Tioman...but I guess you just have to see for yourself.

Best thing about Redang is you can actually fly there.

Shameless plug on a few posts I wrote about Redang - http://kyspeaks.com/tag/redang/
