I heard from some ex-colleagues that in more established companies, if you are given the job as a web developer, that's exacly what you'll be doing every 9-6, Mon-Fri. Not many opportunities to explore other fields, but you get to be very good in that specific area.
This can be quite true.I'm working as a consultant in a MNC which is a telco vendor. My job tasks are very much to the business side and haven't been able to touch much on unix shell scripts, oracle pl/sql and other technical thingy (which is the responsibility of technical guys in my company)
It can be good and bad. I've dropped my technical skills substantially, but at the same time I've gained more exposure (customer facing, problem solving, get chance to travel overseas for project and whatnot). Other than that working in established company gives me decent salary, good benefits and nice working environment.
I forsee myself changing to another company (probably telco operator) in another 2 years. But anything can happen...
