HIGH TENSION CABLES DO NOT HARM YOUR HEALTH
The purpose of this thread is to bust/discuss the myths/misconceptions regarding high tension cables.
Does this sound familiar? "aiya got high tension cable near your house, sure you'll get cancer" "I really like that house but didnt buy it because I dont wanna harm my family's health"

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some General Knowledge First:

What are the harms associated with high tension cables?
-High tension cables carry Alternating-Current (AC), and due to the alternating nature of it generates a magnetic field that is constantly expanding and collapsing call Electromagnetic Field (EMF). Electromagnetic fields (EMFs) are a type of low-frequency electromagnetic radiation emitted from virtually everything electrical and electronic in our modern world — power lines, transformers, electrical panels, building wiring, computers, lights, clocks, appliances, televisions, hairdryers, cell phones, cordless phones, microwave ovens, Wi-Fi, wireless routers and other devices, TV/radio/cell towers, etc.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The idea that living near high-voltage power lines is bad for your health has been around for many years. Illnesses attributed to power lines include childhood leukemias, other cancers, abnormal heart rhythms, miscarriages, low birth weight, birth defects, and other illnesses that might lead to premature death. Despite the conclusions of many studies that find no detectable risk, many people remain unconvinced about the safety of power lines, misconceptions passed on for generations.

Argument 1: Living close to high tension cables put you at a health risk.

- Over the last 20 years, multiple studies have been published reviewing the effect of high-power voltage lines on human health. Among the most recent was a study from England of more than 83,000 workers in the electricity industry. Researchers found no increase in brain cancer or overall death rate when compared to those who did not work around electromagnetic fields. Reports from major research centers in at least nine countries have come to similar conclusions:There is no compelling evidence of any health hazard from power lines. If power lines have any effect on human health, it is small.

Argument 2 : Even though there's no proof that high tension cables are harmful I would like to stay a safe distance from it.

- There're safe distance guide all over the internet, mostly just a generalized standard ranging from a few meters to a few kilometers. The best solution is to take an accurate measurement of the EMF at your house. This is where I come in, because of this same reason I've invested in an EMF meter. So now for the sake of our future generations I'll go to your place to take an EMF reading for free & during my free time. Based on the readings I've gathered from various sites I can say that most houses with high tension cables nearby, the EMF would've died off and WILL NOT reach your house. So even if you stay near high tension cables you would be getting most of the EMF radiation from your household appliances rather than the high tension cables.

With that I conclude this post, please do not hesitate to post constructive arguments. kthxbye

tldr : No proof that high tension cables are a health risk, even if there's a risk you won't be in range anyway.

It's useless to based on a poll to decide on the danger of HTC.

In those old days, if you run a poll on whether the earth is round or flat. All the answers come back will be the earth is flat.

So when the poll results says the earth is flat, does it mean the earth is really flat ?

I know someone working in TNB as an engineer. He told me the frequency of the high tension cable is only 50mhz and cause nothing to our health. The one that causing cells damage is the mobile phone which is more than 10x worst than anything you have in your house and still we are neglecting it and talking about high tension cables.

I am saying the poll has no bearing to the truth.

However :-

If you are concerned about property price, then you should be concerned with the perception, not the truth.

If you are concerned about the truth, then you should ignore the poll.

Prospective buyer to your house you own may have negative perception abt HTC near to the house they may purchase if they believe in feng shui or frienda advice.. So if you want to buy for investment maybe its good to find a house elsewhere. If for own stay its up to your own feeling abt living near to HTC. Just my 2 cents.

This picture is taken from my garden.
As you can see it is quite close - above 50 meters away.
I did a lot of research before I bought this house last year.
From the research I concluded that the risk is very minimal, if at all.
Because of this I paid about RM 500 psf. Other places - about 100m away from my property is going for more than RM 1k psf.
I stay at Ampang Hilir. You will not find such a price in Ampang Hilir.
No regrets.
For all you know the HTC could have been underground and you would have no idea.

Google it and read reputable studies from gov agencies or universities.

Infants are affected in most of the reports that I had read previously and there was a recommendation of 500m distance, for safety precaution.

Emf is absorbed by earth when the cables are underground.

mind posting your source?
did you know that you're absorbing emf from your household appliances everyday? and the dosage is much higher than high tension cables
those 500m guidelines are just very rough generalization, you'll need and emf meter at your site to accurately gauge the emf exposure, I've gotten readings as little as 30m

this is pointless to debate. you can have all the truth in the world that htc is safe but in the end nobody wants a htc near their house if they have a choice. period. therefore houses near htc always trade at a discount. period. if some people want to prove the truth and are not like keyboard warriors, can go purposely move your family next to the htc and live long lives and be part of a new study, but in the end if we had the money we would prefer look out of the window and see trees instead of htc. smile.gif

Htc theory,
rebates gao gao = htc is safe for living nearby, there are plenty of research support this.

Please print out and keep those articles, it's necessary to tell next buyers about Htc = safe.

your call. enter with care even with rebate because demand for htc property always < non htc property.

btw research likely supports the funder. lol. so dont trust everything you read.

contact agents to top up/renew a good medical rider with no annual and lifetime limit. Then the soul and body is ready to stay with htc or even bts.

Don't worry, many research has support it's completely safe to stay there. Just don't play layang-layang around there.

Large study links power lines to childhood cancer
By Gaia Vince

Children living near overhead power lines may have an increased risk of leukemia but the association may not be causal, UK researchers say.

The confusing message, which comes from the largest study to date – of over 29,000 children with cancer – is that since “there is no biological mechanism to explain the higher risk”, the results, “although statistically significant, may be due to chance”.

The study – a collaboration between the Childhood Cancer Research Group at the University of Oxford and National Grid owners, Transco – looked at cancer data in England and Wales between 1962 and 1995, for children aged up to 15 years old.

They were able to map how far each child lived from a high voltage overhead power line. Comparing the children who had cancer with a control group of 29,000 children without cancer but who lived in comparable districts, found that children whose birth address was within 200 metres of an overhead power line had a 70% increased risk of leukemia. Children living 200 to 600 m away from power lines had a 20% increased risk.

https://www.theguardian.com/society/2005/ju...dicineandhealth

This study aimed to investigate association of living near high voltage power lines with occurrence of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Through a case-control study 300 children aged 1-18 years with confirmed ALL were selected from all referral teaching centers for cancer. They interviewed for history of living near overhead high voltage power lines during at least past two years and compared with 300 controls which were individually matched for sex and approximate age. Logistic regression, chi square and paired t-tests were used for analysis when appropriate. The case group were living significantly closer to power lines (P<0.001). More than half of the cases were exposed to two or three types of power lines (P<0.02). Using logistic regression, odds ratio of 2.61 (95%CI: 1.73 to 3.94) calculated for less than 600 meters far from the nearest lines against more than 600 meters. This ratio estimated as 9.93 (95%CI: 3.47 to 28.5) for 123 KV, 10.78 (95%CI: 3.75 to 31) for 230 KV and 2.98 (95%CI: 0.93 to 9.54) for 400 KV lines. Odds of ALL decreased 0.61 for every 600 meters from the nearest power line. This study emphasizes that living close to high voltage power lines is a risk for ALL.

*
A lot of crap being written here, and Iceman finally provided some sources to show that the associated risks in leukemia and cancer on children with high tension cables are not "myths" as you have implied. (Iceman reminded me of the movie Top Gun where Iceman played sidekick to Maverick).

For those who may not want to believe on the risks with high tension cables and have no issues living with units close to these cables, it is their choice and it is fine. Apart from the increased risk with cancer and leukemia which are health-related, there is also another factor which is FENG SHUI related. It is almost the same as getting a property that is close to the oxidation pond or grave yard. Imagine when you come out from your house and you see the grave yard in front of you, or the oxidation pond which may stink a bit.

how about these?

What do expert organizations conclude about the cancer risk from EMFs?

In 2002, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a component of the World Health Organization, appointed an expert Working Group to review all available evidence on static and extremely low frequency electric and magnetic fields (12). The Working Group classified ELF-EMFs as “possibly carcinogenic to humans,” based on limited evidence from human studies in relation to childhood leukemia. Static electric and magnetic fields and extremely low frequency electric fields were determined “not classifiable as to their carcinogenicity to humans” (12).

In 2015, the European Commission Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks reviewed electromagnetic fieldsExit Disclaimer in general, as well as cell phones in particular. It found that, overall, epidemiologic studies of extremely low frequency fields show an increased risk of childhood leukemia with estimated daily average exposures above 0.3 to 0.4 μT, although no mechanisms have been identified and there is no support from experimental studies that explains these findings. It also found that the epidemiologic studies on radiofrequency exposure do not show an increased risk of brain tumors or other cancers of the head and neck region, although the possibility of an association with acoustic neuroma remains open (56).

source

Childhood leukaemia is a comparatively rare disease with a total annual number of new cases estimated to be 49,000 worldwide in 2000. Average magnetic field exposures above 0.3 μT in homes are rare: it is estimated that only between 1% and 4% of children live in such conditions. If the association between magnetic fields and childhood leukaemia is causal, the number of cases worldwide that might be attributable to magnetic field exposure is estimated to range from 100 to 2400 cases per year, based on values for the year 2000, representing 0.2 to 4.95% of the total incidence for that year. Thus, if ELF magnetic fields actually do increase the risk of the disease, when considered in a global context, the impact on public health of ELF EMF exposure would be limited.

A number of other adverse health effects have been studied for possible association with ELF magnetic field exposure. These include other childhood cancers, cancers in adults, depression, suicide, cardiovascular disorders, reproductive dysfunction, developmental disorders, immunological modifications, neurobehavioural effects and neurodegenerative disease. The WHO Task Group concluded that scientific evidence supporting an association between ELF magnetic field exposure and all of these health effects is much weaker than for childhood leukaemia. In some instances (i.e. for cardiovascular disease or breast cancer) the evidence suggests that these fields do not cause them.

guys look, the science is out there, please see it for yourselves.
this is an EMF meter, this thing detects electromagnetic fields,
user posted image
i suggest you get one and start pointing it at HTC cables,
most of the time most houses will be out of the EMF range or it'll be very weak,
after you've done that, bring the meter home and start pointing it at your electronics in your home,
you'll be surprised by how much more emf you're exposed to at home rather than those HTC cables.

so dont even bother fighting if HTC EMF causes cancer since you'll be out of range anyway

Fluorescent tubes under power lines

If you take a normal long fluorescent tube and hold it vertically under a high voltage power line after dark you will be able to see that it lights up of its own accord.

You'll receive maximum emf by standing directly under the cable, the emf meter will tell you that, which is what this video is trying to say. Try holding the tube from far away and see if it lights up?

If you hold the tube directly under HTC but perpendicularly to HTC, the tube won't light.

Yes, household items especially WiFi router and also microwave oven are way more harmful than HTC cables in a home environment. Don't place it right beside your bed on the bedside table or read a book on a sofa and have the WiFi router just beside you.

Singapore mostly underground, people walk above it daily.

In Malaysia, you see the towers.

Asthetic issue mainly. If is just the public norm that we do not want to live near the infra of the utility like elevated water tank, high tension transmission line/pylon, electrical substation & sewerage treatment plant.
