Going to Osaka and experiencing winter for the first time this end of December until early January. Any type of preparation should be made to face winter in Osaka? How many layer of clothes need just to keep us warm?

You'll be fine. Just learn a few Japanese phrases, numbers, and maybe food. Get a few Japanese phrases apps and you are good to go.

I hardly know any Japanese, pick up a few words here and there from watching anime last time. Now attending some basic Japanese classes to learn how to read a bit bit. Survive 2 trips to Japan and planning another few more in the future.
