Thinking of it, hammer indeed has some defensive value against parang.

Putting aside fighting skills, which break-in thieves unlikely have, hammer could really take on a parang. Anyhow it is a 50-50 as any hit from the parang or the hammer could be fatal.

Still I believe the thief is unlikely going to take a chance for a fight over small loot with the defensive house owner swinging a steel hammer over his head.

I prefer safety anyhow, sound the alarm (high pitch) in case of break-in.
