At one time, only E1 (2.0Mbps) circuits are used in Malaysia but today I believe both T1 1(1.5Mbps) and E1 (2.0Mbps) are available. These are called Dedicated Leased Lines and available from Telekom. Mostly used by banks, hotels, large MNCs etc.

They're different from Streamyx because they are symmetrical (speed the same on download and upload) and offer better throughput than asymmetrical (download higher than upload) service.

Traditional T1/E1 are serviced by copper lines. For higher speed, most likely they're fiber based -> eg. Metro Ethernet (10mbps or beyond), or OCx service.

Be careful. Internet service and private WAN using T1/E1 are two different things. Getting T1/E1 to connect between two offices doesn't mean you've Internet access. You have to pay extra for Internet service port.

So how much does it cost to set up a high speed T1 or E1 connection? What's the difference between E1 and T1?

Let say I have a neighbourhood. I get a dedicated line T1 or E1 and share it between the whole neighbourhood. How much would such dedicated line cost? Can someone quote?

The cost of a T1 (1.5Mbps) or E1 (2.0Mbps) circuit buildout depends on distance of your office/neighbourhood from their nearest CO (Central Office) or hub. It varies by location. You have to call Telekom to get specific quote based on your address. Ballpark figure is somewhere between RM300~RM2000/month.

I can tell you what typical CPE are needed for T1/E1 service. It is slightly different from your standard broadband service. For broadband (like Streamyx), you simply need a xDSL modem and you plug in your Ethernet port router and you're done.

For T1/E1 digital line service, it is more complicated, you need a CSU/DSU, and Router. That's your basic cost of the equipment needed.

Telekom will install a NT (Network Termination) device call NIU/SmartJack on the point of entry (also known as demarc) into your building. The SmartJack has RJ48 port for you to connect to a CSU/DSU device. The CSU/DSU can be internal to your Router or can be external. If it is external (with lights on front panel your can see to troubleshoot problem), you need a V.35 cable to connect to a Serial card of your router. From your Router, you can control the setup of the WAN serial line interface and the LAN port (for internal addressing with NAT, etc) for connection to your switch (you need this to share out to other users) and build your network from here to your neighbourhood.

Does that help?
