The Spanish league is different from other leagues. Based on what I've read yesterday, an article that sino provided..simple theory.

1) In Spain, the 'Buy Out' clause is not a 'release clause'. Every player in LFP has a 'buy out' clause and they are obligated to have one. The complicated part is when foreign clubs step in. The clause can be easily triggered by clubs within Spain, where Real Madrid can buy player A from Real Betis without any hassle. For the foreign clubs, they need to be 'approved' by the club itself. Meeting the clause does not guarantee a sale.

2) Bilbao is a Basque club. They are the 'people' club where they will only field BASQUE-BORN/Players because it is what they do. The reason why Bilbao is being stubborn is because they want Herrera to compensate them, it is not easy to find another Basque-born player as good as Herrera. So basically the player needs to fork out on his part too because no way United will pay more than the release clause.

3) Complicated? Hell yeah. This case is similar of Javi Martinez to Bayern Munich. Javi had to pay another 4mil (iirc) to 'free' himself from the contract. So Herrera's case is pretty similar.

4) Don't blame kayu this time. He has done a fantastic job (for once) by keeping the transfer under wraps, unlike last year. This part of the deal is beyond him, he has done everything beyond his power (paperwork etc) and now everything depends on Herrera and Bilbao. There is a willing buyer but not a willing seller.

Lets just hope it will eventually fall through, complicated but yeah.

Just pay the 4mil and secure Herrera. He is 24, still many good years in him.

A quality signing is what we been waiting for.

1) This is not Woodward's fault.
2) Buying out a player's contract is troublesome and has a lot of implications. So United lodged a bid equal to the buy out clause to test luck and save a lot of paperwork, legal wrangling, taxes, etc.
3) That got rejected so United are forced to buy out the contract. Apparently the buy out has been lodged with the Spanish FA. Now it's pending approval by the Spanish FA and the tax authorities.
4) Bilbao anounced that they rejected the earlier bid to appease their fans that they are fighting to keep players and the player is the one who forced the transfer.
5) United will probably be made to pay 4M Euros to Zaragoza as well.
6) Assuming the paperwork is in place and all monies paid, the deal will go through.

I have my own suspicions about that fiasco. I suspect Peter Kenyon botched the deal on purpose, because the moment he left MU and joined Chelsea, he immediately sealed the deal for Chelsea.
Yeah, 29 Million Pounds is a bit high, but I'm not that worried about this one. I'm more worried about the alleged Shaw for 34 Million pounds deal. 34 Million pounds for an 18 year old with only 1 BPL and 1 World Cup experience is a very big risk. I sincerely hope it works out well.
I think we have to take their cultural history in context. I suspect they already have an agreement with the players that anyone who meets the clause gets to go, but the club needs to protect itself by making a big brouhaha about rejecting bids and the player forced the transfer buy terminating (buy out in Spain) his contract. That's probably what happened.
Yeah, it's very complicated. You are right the club could object, but its more of a technicality because the Spanish wordings are vague and no one has challenged this in court before. FIFA obliges Spanish clubs to accept it. The EU as well. Besides, it wouldn't be good for them to renege on their own agreements as it would affect their ability to purchase other rare Basque players.

This whole brouhaha about rejecting the bid was basically a formality for the sake of politics. So the club can show they fought hard to keep the player. It was the player who forced the transfer. I'm pretty sure the players and club already agree if the clause is met, he goes.

Though historically we've been accustomed to play heavily on the flanks, I think LvG has shown that he is the kind of coach who maximize tactic based on players available to him, not the other way around (at least in recent years). Based on current players and their form, it's tactic I can think of at the moment, mostly influenced by mix of my long affection with 4-3-1-2 and Dutch's great win against Spain system (and of course terrible form of our wingers).

This makes Shaw price even lower
