Anyway both mini & micro sim can be use, so long u don't insert micro sim adaptor to mini sim tray, which us a silly idea anyway.

No need micro sim adaptor lah ! Mi3 already come with 1 micro sim tray & 1 mini sim tray, just insert which ever sim u have & good to go.

So far the best Soft casing i see is the original Xiaomi soft gel casing.

Insert micro sim into mini sim tray is it, anyway u don't need to do that as Mi3 come with 2 sim tray 1 for mini sim 1 for micro sim, u can use either, not advisable to use sim adaptor though, risk of damaging the connection pin.
