Nah. I doubt that.

Post your result on Monday. I am quite sure you can get at least a Band 4.

Just a question: why are you lacking confidence in yourself?

Sometimes, things may not be as bad as you think. IMO, I think that you can easily secure a high Band 4.

Whenever I did something abysmally, I'll be frank to myself and expect things to take a turn for the worse. And I might have a chance to change that. But right now, all I can do is waiting for the result. If I'm not satisfy with it, then I'll just take it as a lesson learned and strive harder for next time.

Here's a quote from my teacher:
Worry is like a rocking chair, it keeps you shaking but brings you nowhere.

So I think you shouldn't worry about this, and good luck for tomorrow's results! rclxms.gif

I'm not worrying too much about my MUET result because I have a whole lot of other things to be kept in check, like my second and third term exams. Though I'll admit I'm a little agitate for tomorrow.

I will let you know my MUET result once I have it.

I got a band 5 for my MUET exam.

Listening- 29/45
Speaking- 35/45
Reading- 93/120
Writing- 72/90

Aggregated score: 229/300

My sixth form senior assistant told us that only 3 students(including me) scored band 5 in my school. Thank you Just Visiting By, Critical_Fallacy and anybody out there who have helped me in my preparation towards my last year's MUET exams.

Congratulations! I told you I know whether someone is capable of getting a Band 5.

But I cannot help and notice something: there seems to be a sharp increase in the number of Band 5 since 2014 July exam, and the average marks for writing seems to have shot up. Previously the number who got above 60 is very rare, now in my secondary school lots of people got more than 60.

And my friend who sat for November 2013 paper told me July 2014 Reading paper was much easier.

I do hope MUET does not get easy or lenient over time. I used to respect it as a reliable measure of language proficiency even though it's not widely recognised.

But on a side note: you totally deserve the Band 5. rclxms.gif

I had told you not to worry. Congratulations! rclxms.gif Nice start of year 2015! If you want to study overseas then you can start preparing for IELTS or TOEFL.
The same thing will happen to you too in STPM first term results, since you are enthusiastic in the knowledge that you had learned and having the ability to think out of the box, scoring a CGPA of 4.00 shouldn't be a problem for you.

Now it's my turn to sit for the exam. my grasp of vocabularies are not as strong as you, so securing a band 5 is very hard although I scored a high band 4 in my trials. Mind to share some tips to master those vocabs?

Unlike you, my future is at stake. I am worried that I screwed my exam and I may fell to the abyss anytime. cry.gif

I do hope neither the MUET exam get nerfed nor getting ridiculously harder.
Rumors said that march exam is the hardest. Furthermore, speaking test conducted in schools located in town or cities is more cruel and strict compared to those in outskirts of town because candidates in town should have a better mastery of English. Is it true?

I am not so sure about which paper is harder. Based on my school, March reading paper seems easier to score than July reading paper. Students in my school have to take MUET in July. If we are not satisfied with our result we can resit for March paper. And for those students who have resitted for March paper, their reading tend to score better than their previous ones.

About speaking test I believe that you just have to be confident even if you can't speak fluently. The confidence in speaking will help you score better than you would have thought XD

Congratulations! You scored very well in your MUET so you don't have to worry about resitting for MUET paper anymore.

You have the potential to do things very good but it is usually hindered by your anxiousness. Worrying brings you nowhere so you should believe in yourself. Believing in yourself is the first step to success XD

Thanks. I'm quite relieved with my MUET result, but deep down I feel that I've got lots of learning to do and I don't think that my band 5 is a clear indication of my true English proficiency on a daily basis.

Hitherto, my MUET teacher told me that there is hardly a student who could score a band 5 in MUET exam in any given year or session in my school, and it was persistent for many years. However, now that my batch has break the school's record by having more than 1 student achieving band 5 in a single session, I too reckon that the news seems too good to be true. Not that it's a bad thing to occur, but I do hope that the MUET markers aren't generous in giving away those marks to us.

No, no.. I think you've overestimated me. I don't think that my first term result could be as good as my MUET's result. I can vividly recall on how much trouble that I had to face when I was sitting for my Chemistry and Maths T exams last year. There were lots of question that I couldn't solve, and even if I could, I don't think that I could easily get away from making any silly mistakes for every single question. Let alone that I didn't even have the time to fully complete and recheck my every first term papers. In fact I'm sure that I will fail in any 2 or more subjects in my first term exams. I'm not really a pessimist and I will admit, even now, the mere action of recalling the days of my first term exams does send chill down my spine.
With that being said, I hope that I'll be more prepared in facing my STPM term 2 exams.

When it specifically comes to writing section in MUET, I reckon that you are going to need more than just an essay completely filled with flowery words that speak jargon. In fact, inserting excessive low-frequency words in an essay might open up to more flaws that you tend to make, because some words used in an essay are inappropriate or simply out of place. What I do believe is that you should emphasise the way you construct evidences in accordance with examples based on your main idea. My MUET teacher once told me that in SPM English/BM essay, you will garner higher marks if you're able to impress your marker with your expertise in inserting any powerful quotes or bombastic words in your essay without dealing too much with it's real content. But as for MUET essay, you first need to be good in elaborating your ideas and facts, and the vocabulary part comes later on. But if you really like to learn more on acing the MUET test, I urge you to seek more advice from our seasoned senior Just Visiting By. I learned a lot from him before I had my MUET test and I believe that he can do the same to you too.

You have been consistent so far in your studies, so I believe that you will have little to no trouble in dealing with it. And if anything, you only need more practice and you're good to go.

It's the same to my secondary school! There was very few Band 5 students but now there are more, an obvious increase in achievements!

Just pray that this trend continues because the English level is indeed climbing up and not because the exam is getting easier or the marking gets lenien.

Actually, now that your MUET score is higher than me, you should share how you get such high score! Haha.

As for MUET, I say you stick to the way you write and avoid trying to mimic influential writers/journalists in writing your essay. Language is a form of expression and it therefore should be expressed in the way the writer prefers. Trying too hard to mimic the writing style of certain writers could backfire and render the writing unnatural and awkward.

It is perhaps worth mentioning that while writing an essay, emphasis should be given to the contents and not the use of jargon or gobbledygook not known to ordinary people. While flowery sentence could certainly spice things up, wrong usage and grammatical errors made in failed attempt to impress the markers would undoubtedly backfire. Usage of bombastic words should be limited, and citing real life examples like environmental issues or controversial cases would indicate an exposure and thus impresses the markers. And here is where PA would come in handy.

Maturity is what is sought after, together with the ability to argue an issue and convince the readers. This is why only factual essays are ever tested in English Proficiency Tests.

Oh, if you don't mind, could you let us know how many students scored band 5 and above in your secondary school?

I know that this might sound weird, but, I often use the exact same formula that my form 5 BM teacher taught me for every factual essay. It goes like this: AMKCP. A stands for Ayat isi(Main point), M stands for Mengapa(Factors), K for Kesan(Effect), C for Contoh(Example), and finally P for Penegas(Closing statement for a paragraph). I don't really have to strictly follow the order. And my BM teacher told me that it's best to shuffle them, for instance, I start off AMKCP with the first paragraph, MACKP for second paragraph and so forth. Yes, it looks very simple and cheesy, but, after practicing it for numerous times, it became a powerful tool for me ever since. I even used it from time to time in my PA essays. And thanks to the guidance of my MUET teacher too, I was able to sometimes form a decent essay.

Like I said before in this thread, my MUET score is not an indication of my exact capability in conversing or writing in English. It just so happens that the questions I got are relatively easy, and I bet that many students out there with or without band 5 can easily outmatch me when it comes to day to day usage of English.

Normally between 5-15. My batch was 5. The next batch had none for first try (November). The next sitting (July session) is exclusively for those who wished to improve the result, and among them, 5 of them got Band 5 in the next sitting.

This is abnormal in my secondary school history. People who previously fail to achieve Band 5 don't usually get Band 5, especially since most who retook got only Band 3 as those who got Band 4 were satisfied with their result.

Just a quick reminder here, we will have our second term STPM exam starting from 18th to 21st May. That's roughly 4 months left to our big exam, so I hope we are all able to make use of our time wisely!
