I am from a bridge camera thinking of starting my photography journey but cant decide which camera models to get.

I'm having a dilemma between nikon and canon (at first i already decide to get a nikon coz they say nikon for photos canon for movie)

Thats why i wanted to get a Nikon d90 at first (used) its pretty cheap now. I didnt want to get those beginner models D2xxx D3xxx D5xxx because I want to be able to control and have more dials like the D90 + a LCD on top to get used to using it because i want to be a PRO one day!!! brows.gif

And then i start thinking if i want to go full frame one day i would go with a canon i love the L lens series so why dont just start with a canon? unless the Nikon lenses are compatible with the canon? I dont know are they compatible? eg the nikkor 50mm f1.8 G lens. My friend started learning with a nikon and now hes with canon and doing pretty good (already a pro) and normally when i look around mostly all pro photographers at events use a canon not a nikon rclxub.gif so i assume a canon is better.

So would u guys recommend me some canon camera models with similar controls as a D90 with LCD and more dials something on par with it and the lens i should go for (i shoot portrait and landscapes). Or if you think i should go with a nikon tell me why hmm.gif

EDIT: Budget 2K can go up to 2.5K. I'm going to buy a camera used in garage sales so 2.5K should be sufficient

1st : no such thing already, both canon and nikon can produce good enough quality of photo and video.

2nd : any dslr will give you full control over shutter speed, iso and aperture. having a "pro" alike camera doesn't mean that you are a pro, your works are what make you a pro, not your camera.

3rd : not yet start real photography already thinking want to go full frame? that's like someone who hasn't even got his driving license but dreaming to own sports car already. and nikon lenses will only work on canon camera if you put an adapter but what's the point?

4th : that's more about sponsorship and those, a lot of news company are sponsored by canon that's why you can see a lot more canon around compared to nikon. a lot of people drive toyota too, does that mean that every toyota will be better than any other brands?

tell us your budget and then we can help you on the recommendation.

I just want to plan well I would be wasting a lot of money if i cant decide whether i want to go full frame or just buy a camera for fun and keep in cabinet never shoot so why waste so much money on it then? I'm not saying i want to look like a pro but not a pro, my meaning is if im going to learn why would i go for a beginner model and end up not satisfied after using it for a while and then need to upgrade body again and sell and buy again in a short time?? So im looking for something in between that i can learn and use for sometime before i go PRO.

You must have a DREAM to ACHIEVE. You work towards your goal what is life without a dream? When im in primary school teacher always ask what i want to be when i grow up I am in primary school not even college but i already can answer what i want to be when i grow up so its not wrong to 'dream' its a step to success so you know what you want and you work to get it. A person with no dream can never be successful. You will lose track and go in wrong direction. When i say im going PRO im not just saying its a commitment regardless I will learn until im PRO so DREAM IT!!

and in events the pro photographers are using their own personal camera model btw i have a friend in that idk if hes sponsored or not but hes using his own canon so im unsure of your canon nikon sponsorship nevertheless thanks for making that statement, you may be right.

My budget 2.5K i believe is sufficient since now all used cameras around there depends what model. I dont mind giving extra in as long as I dont need to sell and buy body in a short time

If your budget is around 2.5k, you can try Nikon D3100 it's quite good. I'm been using it like 5 years now, no problem at all smile.gif

Since you want articulated screen.. how about 700D? wink.gif
It costs you for ~RM2.2k (with 18-55mm STM kit) and you can use the remaining money to get a cheap EF 50mm f/1.8 II (which costs you for ~RM300). icon_rolleyes.gif

If you are just concentrating on Portraits and Landscapes, can consider the Pentax K-5 for its well known high dynamic range capability. Or even a Nikon D7000. Both have more Megapixels and brilliant sensor than the D90. Just need a good lens and some ND filters for lanscaoes. For video, have to look elsewhere.

Cheers and happy shopping........ icon_rolleyes.gif

thanks for reply bro I will consider D7000. By the way just wondering im thinking of getting the Fuji x100 too for portability but is confused since cant change the lens so will the fuji be able to take everything from portraits to landscapes and produce some bokeh effect as well? or getting the micro four thirds like olympus is better?

Canon or Nikon doesn't matter, learning curve is the same, you're the one clicking the shutter. There's a lot of people taking great pictures with cropped sensor cameras as well, some of them are from this forum, you can check out those official CaNikon Sony Fuji threads.

No matter which brand you start with, you'll always be tempted to jump ship, grass is always greener on the other side. You might be starting a thread whether or not you should switch from A to B after some time you got your first DSLR when you couldn't get the result you wanted.

I'd suggest getting a used D5100 with its kit lenses and learn from there, invest the rest of your budget in either lightning or tripod or attend workshops or even go travel, these can improve your photography more than acquiring the best of the best gears. Although it doesn't have all those "PRO" controls, it still have the same sensor as the D7000, which have awesome dynamic range, useful if you're planning to go PRO in landscape, plus we don't really require all those buttons in landscapes anyway, since its a pretty slow process. Body is also not so important, as it gets upgraded always, research on the brand with better lenses lineup that suits your needs more.

And please state which genre of photography you want to go PRO in, easier for us to suggest a brand, or even a model, if you insist in getting Canon or Nikon.

Do more research as well, since it's YOUR dream, you might not be satisfied in what others provide you with.

Not really sure about Fuji cameras. But heard a lot of good reviews for their brilliant sensor and image quality. The X100 should be able to do the "Bokeh" effect if you are close snough to the subject considering its an APSC size sensor with a f2.0 lens. But the problem is that it would not be wide enough at 23mm for some Landscape shot. And not tele enough for some close up portraits as well. So is more like a casual and holiday camera with brilliant image quality. Not a specialize tool.

Cheers........... icon_rolleyes.gif

With a budget of RM 2.5k, just head to a reputable camera shop and try the various camera.
DSLR will be larger than the Fuji and micro 4/3 however the Fuji and Micro 4/3 aren't exactly portable too.
Also test out the auto focus and see if they're quick enough for you.

Thin DOF can be achieve in DSLR, Fuji and Micro 4/3. Don't worry too much about that.

I'm not sure if you can get a second hand D7000 for RM 2.5 though.

Canon DSLR does have a slight edge in videography and Nikon DSLR does have a slight edge in photography in general.
However these are not crippling handicaps but features you'll probably never realize unless you push your system to the very edge.

what makes you think that full frame is best? full frame doesn't mean top notch pictures, it just provides you better low light performance and more bokeh. APSC camera or even smaller sensor camera can gives you good result too. and mind you, if you buy a FF camera, then sell it in a few years, you will lose a lot of money too. if you buy a cheaper apsc in comparison, there's less to loss since the camera isn't so expensive to start with.

again, you need to start photography first then only you will know what is your progress and so. not saying it's wrong to have dream.

then you can ask them why use canon instead of nikon? i am talking about news agencies btw, so i can't say anything about those independent professional. again both nikon and canon can produce world class images, even any other cameras can do so, choosing between brand is just solely depend on your preference.

2.5k can get you quite good camera already. just that you need to decide between good body or good lens. you can get a good body and pair it with cheap kit lens or a cheap used body with a good quality lens.
