The Roots conceptual biggrin.gif

Introduction to Rooting - Part 1 - Theory
Much of this post is compiled and written up by me based on reviews of various sources around the net and other sections of LYN. Sources and Contributors are duly acknowledged. If you wish to reproduce this writeup please PM me that you are doing so and acknowledge me as well. Thanks.

A bit of evangelism before we begin:
10 reasons why Android is still better than iOS - AndroidAuthority - 2013-01-17
Read the comments for a feel of what people think after having read the article.

Since we're actually going to discuss rooting, here is an article for you to understand why your phone is not supplied rooted out of the box:
Why Doesn’t Android Come Rooted? - 2013-03-12

Rooting for Beginners - some general explanations and understanding

The simple, non-sexy, non-flashy, techie answer: root gives you administrator (ie God) access to your device.
Root DOES NOT change your phone in any other way. No speed-ups, no slowdowns, no other changes or magic. But it OPENS THE DOOR to magic icon_rolleyes.gif

Other answers using different metaphors:
Easiest Explanation EVER To Explain Root Vs Jailbreak
Think of it like the Matrix: Jailbreaking is comparable to what Morpheus could do. He could bend the rules of the system to overcome certain restrictions, but was still bound to its rules. Rooting is what Neo could do. Not only could he bend the rules, he could completely break them

LINK:Difference between ios Jailbreaking and Android Rooting
an excerpt:
Now while IOS users might consider jailbreaking their iPhone the same thing as Android users rooting their Android phones, there is a HUGE difference. In fact, you can't even compare jailbreaking to rooting, and here's why.
Android out of the box allows users to install 3rd party apps (also known as sideloading), already allows you to install themes, and even allows you to install applications directly from your SD card or internal memory of your device. Everything that IOS users hope to accomplish with jailbreaking their device is already included as basic functionality within Android.

LINK:Another article explaining Rooting from Android Authority

Does Rooting Void warranty?
For ANY NEXUS PHONE, it's a yes and no answer. From the terms and conditions, rooting/flashing will void your warranty, but LG international or any manufacturer's phone maker like Sammy's Knox, HTC's H-Boot, Sony's DRM keys or etc are not strict about this. So far there have not been cases of rejecting rooted phones, but please be prudent and perform a SUPER DUPER CLEAN ROMS,RADIO,BL n RECOVERY before turning in your phone for warranty.

Can rooting damage your phone?
It is a one in a million chance. If you are afraid of this slim chance, don't root.
This usually happens due to PEBKAC issues. Therefore, if you are prone to PEBKAC, do not proceed. Please google PEBKAC for your OWN UNDERSTANDING AND PROTECTION.
If you do not suffer from PEBKAC, then please ensure 1 very important thing: your download is NOT corrupt. For Windows, use this tool: HashTab by implbits
Make sure that your file MD5 matches the one from the host site. If the MD5 matches, your download is clean, and you may proceed.

There may be cases where you will not have the MD5 from the host site. If that is the case, use this tool: http://www.7-zip.org/
Install it. Select default options, and then run "Test archive" from the right click menu. Passing the test will give you a good indication your download is not corrupt.

Meanwhile on bootloaders,
Other manufacturers also practice bootloader locking as a so-called "security measure" to protect, ostensibly, the user. See link above about why your phone is not rooted out of the box. Here is a link to a post by an XDA forumer about bootloaders for Samsung, HTC and Sony.

Also see this post (2013-03-08) by DooMLoRD, a recognized XDA developer, on his steps for unlocking the Sony bootloader. Warnings quoted from his post :
So we should thanks to GOOGLE for being more mod-friendly as the universe than the other manufacturers.

Additional information about bootloaders from Reddit's Android subforum.

Post by uber Motorola rooting guru Dan Rosenberg on why he is giving up on unlocking the Motorola bootloader - 2013-04-09

Article from DroidViews on "To Root or Not to Root" - 2013-01-10
This DroidView article discusses rooting and gives a lot of the same information as above.

Change the animation scale to 0.5x and change to art run time.(art runtime might depend on individual but for me i noticed smoother transition and faster multitasking) biggrin.gif

Some tips to make your nexus 5 smoother:
Go to Settings>about phone>( Tap 7x times until you get developer options),
Go back to settings again and you should have the developer options,
go to settings>developer options.Make sure it is on and you should find 3 things, window animation scale,
transition animation scale and animator animation scale,
Change all to .5x, you will notice faster transition.

Also, you can try changing the select runtime to
use ART, (Android Run Time) instead of use dalvik.
Your phone should reboot and it'll take somewhere between 10-15minutes to set up your phone. Do note that all the apps will be larger. Example a 20mb app will become maybe 28mb.
More info on ART:

http://www.infinum.co/the-capsized-eight/a...time-in-kit-kat
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2516646

Also, whatsapp and TiBu, Titanium * Backup doesn't work with ART previously but it is now working fine n some apps will be incompatible with ART but so far i never face issues with any app.

Google is really so close to perfecting the Nexus as a smartphone. Nexus 5 is a huge improvement over Nexus 4, and the obvious upgrade for Nexus 4 users, it just still needs a few refinements before I can comfortably recommend it to normal smartphone shoppers. For enthusiasts seeking the device that will get Android updates first, or shoppers looking for optimal value, the Nexus 5 is a definite buy.

The Verge
QUOTE
The Nexus 5 is an excellent phone in many ways. It's solidly built and feels great to use. It's got serious processing power which means it can handle pretty much anything you throw at it. The phone has an absolutely gorgeous display. The KitKat update is polished and refined, and cements my belief that not only is Android leading the charge in mobile OSs from a functionality and user interface standpoint, but from a design standpoint as well.

Engadget
QUOTE
A phone like the Nexus 5 would get our blessing even at a higher price, but the fact that you can buy it for as low as $350 makes it that much sweeter. We can't point our finger at any one feature that was clearly the victim of cost-cutting, with battery life being the only possible exception. And even that's somewhat of an improvement over last year's Nexus 4. We love the high-res display, overall performance and the enhancements brought to us by Android KitKat. Most of the problems we saw in the Nexus 4 have been addressed here. All told, we can think of very few things we find fault with.

Techno Buffalo
QUOTE
Nexus 5 is the best Nexus device to date and it has rocking specs, hardware and display all for a great price.  Unlike the Nexus 4, this version features LTE connectivity, something users have been clamoring for for a while now.  The Nexus phone, which used to be a developer-only device, has become a consumer brand upon itself. The Nexus 5 a fine device that is worthy of the buzz we have witnessed in the last few months. As Google intends for it to be, the Nexus 5, sets the bar for other Android devices to follow.

Phone Arena
QUOTE
The Nexus 5 is very much like that person at the gym who wears an oversized t-shirt to hide the results they’ve been working hard on for some time. There are other smartphones that might be bigger, badder, and better looking, but regardless of that, the Nexus 5 is a humble little fella that doesn’t feel obligated to “show off.” Instead, its modest approach and one-of-a-kind pricing is an effective combination that shows us that it’s a force to be reckoned with.

Tech Radar
QUOTE
1.The Nexus 5 with Android 4.4 KitKat carries on the recent tradition of top-tier specs and with impressively budget prices from Google and with the Nexus 5 it's taken that idea and supercharged it.
We've come to expect Nexus devices to be developer-only handsets that never reach the type of hype or adoption that the HTC One or Galaxy S4 would get, but that's mostly because Google doesn't advertise in the same way as its rivals and previous Nexus devices have generally not been on par with other flagship handsets in terms of build quality and performance.
When the Nexus 4 launched in late 2012, the most enticing thing was its initial £240 price point. For an unlocked device with decent hardware, it seemed like a steal. But it wasn't without some shortcomings, which led to only those looking to get a strong handset at a low, low price buying it, rather than anyone wanting top specs.

2.One thing we noticed immediately when picking up the device was its weight. It's very light, thanks mostly to LG's use of plastics here. It certainly doesn't have the same premium feel that the HTC One or iPhone 5S has, but it's easy to forgive because of its price point.
The soft touch back can get pretty greasy even if you wash your hands frequently, but it's easily wiped away. We tend not to get so picky with these things anymore, but we know there are folks who like their devices looking pristine.
While we're going to dive deeper into the software, we will say this: it is fast. Given its lack of rubbish apps and widgets from carriers, and perhaps buggy interfaces from manufacturers, the Nexus 5 flies.
We didn't have any real issues with software except for the occasional app crash, but that is likely more to do with apps not being fully optimized for this new version of Android.

5.Readwrite
QUOTE
Every time Google picks a manufacturing partner for a Nexus smartphone, the device that emerges is extremely similar in terms of hardware to a flagship device that manufacturer has already released. The Nexus One was the cousin of the HTC Incredible. The Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus were derivations of Samsung’s Galaxy S smartphones. For the Nexus 5, its kindred spirit is the LG G2 that was released over the summer.

The LG G2 is probably the most souped-up hardware of any Android smartphone released this year. It features the latest quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 2.2 GHz processor, a 3000 mAh battery, a 13-megapixel back camera (with sophisticated optical image stabilization hardware) and 2 GB of RAM. It is a beast of a smartphone when it comes to hardware.

The Nexus 5 gets most of that same hardware. Yet Nexus 5 with 16 GB of internal storage cost only $349 without a contract through the Google Play store, about half of what an unsubsidized LG G2 would run. Hence, some of the hardware in the Nexus 5 has been scaled back. The screen is a little smaller, the battery is only 2,300 mAh (same as the HTC One) and the back camera is 8 MP without all of LG’s sophisticated sensors.

There is a major difference between the LG G2 and the Nexus 5 though: LG is awful at making software and user experience decisions. Google is pretty darned good at software and user experience.

No la, I already know how smooth and fast this phone is.( yesterday I keep watching nexus 5 reviews, gaming performance, drop test, comparison haha ) I just want to try the hands on feel, the camera, the screen and check for the price.

But wait, the battery life still not good enough? mudkipryan94 gor gor told me he got 1 day and 3 hours + 5.5 sot, isn't that good enough? ( maybe for me it's enough)

Soft speaker means low in volume? It's okay for me as I seldom watch videos. I read an article, it says that nexus 5 has soft vibrations too, is it true?

really depends on how you use the phone and what network you're connected to,

my case, mixed wifi & LTE throughout the day, browsing/fb/message = consistent 4hr SOT (100% - 5%)

Well, powerbank is the solution if you don't mind carrying another device around but for me , my nexus 5 manage to last me 1 day all the time and i never had any problem.

At least it's better than my friend's ip5 where they had to only turn on 3g when they need it , they can't leave it on 24/7 otherwise the battery wont last them a day. and the way they have to turn on 3g is quite troublesome, they had to go settings and turn it on. rclxub.gif

Well, I'm just try to make the situation better, unless you talking about 3 days only charge once, then with like 6-8hours SOT. nod.gif

I kinda rage at those fella like my friends or any other people out there, I think most of you also seen before. 5-6 fella sitting on the same round table in Kopitiam, female/male wise, all order drinks and look at their smartphone 90% of the time. doh.gif

N5's camera for me is okay because I always use low budget and mid range phone only, the camera is always 5mp only ( like my current phone, 5mp is good enough ), so 8mp for me is like super duper holiao hahahaha.
I like this sentence so much. Nowadays all the kids and teenagers play indoor activities only, now where got teenagers still like me, mountain biking, listen to birds singing, cycle and go kaolui mudkipryan94 hehe  brows.gif

Btw, having bad battery life with Trinity kernel. All stock. Can't really UV on this kernel, keep reboot for me. I'll continue to test the kernel for a few days though since I just upgraded 4.4.3 yesterday.  On rastakat. But it's seriously very smooth compare to what I use before.

Yea for fun only. The number seems nice, 30,000 Lol. Who got 51k? The highest right now is sims22 with 41k+ (using z2 dalvik+bionic optimization)

Anyway bench means nothing to us, but dev need it to push the devices higher.

cry.gif emo liao..
mine using Faux kernel + own compilation + Bionz Dalvik tweak also get 37,239 on Antutu leh..

(edit: that's why i anti-applefags asking about the pricing like shit.. doh.gif )

Don't worry, benchmarks are nothing. Though the highest score I came across for N5 was a xda member's 51k+
