that's why I find it weird... I assume that either:
1. only certain faceplates are high in demand
2. limited quantity
3. imported by other regions
I think Nintendo never disclosed how many were sold in total, the specific breakdowns or anything related to cover plates.
The M-C report only covers until 2014 btw and it's obvious the JP are buying XL models more ever since n3DS was announced

afaik single player is optional so you can choose to just focus on online battles
