Hi All,

Could you please advice/guide me on purchasing milk powder for newborn? I know Breast feeding is encouraged but just in case, I want to have milk powder on standby.

1)Could you please enlightened me on Pediasure and Enfalac? Which is better?
2) Which milk powder have high DHA content?

Thanks a lot in advance.

Cheers

If it's your 1st delivery, your breast milk maybe will kick in slightly late, anyhow I do have many friends able to breast feed their babies one hour after deliver baby.

If you wish to try on breast feed, please choose formula that taste less tasty/sweet than breast milk.

Your breast milk should be sufficient for few month consumption if you have a proper storage freezer.....

I did not buy any fm to standby. However, gynae clinic did provide sample. I just kept that as standby. I am 100% sure I want and will bf hence the brand of standby fm did not matter to me.. After all it's just for a few feedings.
Yes, I did had to supplement few feeds in the beginning, but after that already fully bf so fm is thrown out. Personal opinion but I feel that no point pondering too much over which brand milk if you are determined to bf. tongue.gif Any brand, small tin is good enough for standby. smile.gif

Breast feeding is best food for baby.
It is preferable to bf until 6mths or better 1yr old.

In choosing baby food,
1. What age ...
0-12mths = infant formula
>1yr = growing up milk

2. Notice the flavour - preferably no flavouring like Vanilla.
If you start with vanilla or flavouring, they will forever be limited in choice.
eg. refuse to eat non-flavour milk which maybe required in case of CMPA

CMPA = cow's milk protein allergy.
Consult your doctor if it occurs.
If got choice other than Soya, choose the other.

You dont want them to grow up to be choosy eaters.

3. Choose a brand that is easilty available.
Shops do biz. They dont stock those non-popular brands
so if your baby likes that brand, but no stock... susah

4. DHA is not the only ingredient.
But if you insist, I hear Dumex Mamil Gold has the highest DHA.
Natural source of DHA = fish oil so the powder maybe different.

It may not taste appetising but thats what you ask for. DHA

5. Price = can you afford it in the long run?

6. Follow the instructions in making milk like wash your hands first.
Do not change the mixing ratio.
You can feed in smaller meals.
But dont think add more water so less heaty... nope doesnt work that way.

There are ways to intro milk to baby or changing formula like
1 in 5 meals = new formula. Then gradually move to 2 in 5 ... etc.

7. Taste it yurself first.
If it burns you then not suitable for baby.

Dont premake batchs. Hi nutrition food easy for bacterial growth.

8. For just in case - you buy small tin. Notice the expiry date.

9. Consult a paediatrician... dont simply take advise from your PC screen or blogs.

Breast fed baby usually has less problems with better immune system and digestion.
I understand the constraints for parents but change your lifestyle for baby sake.

breast feeding will be easier and less stress with the support from husband and family members, as well as understanding from your boss/colleagues.

i'm working and my boy already 1 year old++, i'm lucky i'm still able to fully breast feed my boy

What is the best food you recommend.. for you
There is no 1 formula best for all babies.

As one of the members suggested,
you can try samples from paediatricians
I hope the guide will help you find the right formula.

U should be confident that you'd be able to breastfeed your child.

Don't worry on the low milk thing, many young mother give up as the early stage there'd be very little milk being produced. My wife had the same problem too, but we both never thought of having formula milk as 'standby'.

6 months in my girl is now strong and healthy being breastfed on demand by the wife. Should u need help u should join the Facebook group called Malaysian Breastfeeding Advocates. A lot of good advise there.

HOWEVER back to the question, what's best for baby according to my paed in SJMC;

1. Similac
2. Wyeth S26
3. Enfalac
4. Avoid Nestle!

Formula fed babies do have constipuation problems so do be careful before u decide to even 'mix' it up a little

There is really no one size fits all when it comes to formula milk. While one is acceptable for a baby it make not be the case for another baby. If you are looking to buy some for standby, then I'd recommend you to buy a few. That is just in case if it one is not suitable. There are many ways to find out if a formula milk is suitable for your baby or not. Observe your baby if he/she develops allergy (e.g. skin rashes) or the stool passed out. Most formula milk are 'heaty' and may prevent your baby from even passing motion.

u have to know also that even you think the formula is good, your baby later might not like it and dont want to drink.

Happen to my baby. She dont want to drink the high end milk, she just take the normal dutch lady step 1, and now she is taking step 2.

My advise, please dont even think of any possibility that u wont be able to breastfeed. Be confident and you'll be doing fine.
