No, you can use your DVB-T2-enabled TV to receive the digital channels, which you can't do so just yet until they officially launch it.
Alternatively, you may purchase a set-top box.

MCMC

The MCMC Slides for Planet Digital does have some insight on some of the channels to be included but probably that is just in planning.
Take a look at page 13 of the slide. Seems like Nickelodeon and National Geographic will be in there somewhere, and even Discovery, CNN & Bloomberg is shown there. Hopefully the change is for the better.

Sam Irvine of Freeview (NZ I believe) was also one of the presenter. Is that hinting that Freeview is linking up to be on Malaysian FTA TV?

You're welcome.
I don't care about the politics. What I know is that at least we're moving forward. We'll make do with the current FTA channels but once it picks up then we will probably end up spolit with too many choices to watch hahhahaha. I can't wait for the launch in June or Sept. Seems like Malaysia is looking to NZ for the implementation. rclxms.gif  rclxms.gif

It's for sure that we will complete the switchover by 2020, as agreed by all ASEAN members.

It's quite unlikely that FOX Asia will be made available for free.

Ahmad Shabery: Two million free digital TV set-top boxes for the needy

KUALA LUMPUR, April 7 — Two million units of the set-top box will be distributed free of charge to selected low-income households to enable them watch digital TV broadcast when the service is introduced, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.

Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said the set-top box would be given to recipients of the 1Malaysia People's Aid (BR1M) and e-Kasih poverty-eradication programmes.

"The digital TV broadcast cannot be received by television sets which use the analogue system. Many people in the rural areas do not subscribe to the Astro service and, as such, they should be given assistance.

"One of the conditions agreed to between the suppliers and implementers of the (digital TV) service is the provision of the set-top box free of charge to enable this target group to receive the digital TV broadcast," he said when replying to a question from Datuk Abd Latiff Ahmad (BN-Mersing).

Abd Latiff had wanted to know whether the government would provide assistance or incentives to enable poor rural people to enjoy the digital TV broadcast when it is introduced.

Ahmad Shabery said the introduction of the digital TV service was in keeping with the trend in global broadcasting that allowed for the use of the radio wave spectrum in a more optimal and efficient manner.

"This allows for the broadcast of more interactive programmes and better quality video broadcasts," he said.

The minister said digital TV transmission tests were expected to begin at the end of this month via the transmitting stations in Bukit Pelindung, Kuantan, in Pahang; Bukit Besar in Terengganu and Machang in Kelantan.

"The installation of infrastructure is expected to be completed at the end of next year, with the Klang Valley being the last of the areas to get it in view of the need for greater development and cost," said the Kemaman MP.

Replying to a supplementary question from Abd Latiff, he said the government would ensure that the switch over from the analogue TV to the digital TV system did not run into snags and would see how best it could supervise the television stations in the country.

"The question of backtracking does not arise because, ultimately, the analogue system has to be terminated between 2018 and 2020 as part of the spectrum will be used for another purpose.

"In other words, whether we like it or not, we have to terminate the analogue TV like how we terminated the black-and-white broadcast. There is no choice, everyone has to migrate," he said.

Answering a supplementary question, from Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan (PAS-Kota Baharu), on a claim that private television stations seemed to monopolise the broadcasting industry in the country so much so that it placed a burden on consumers, Ahmad Shabery said consumers had a choice.

He said the government was developing the digital TV system based on the free-to-air system with the use of transmitting towers to broadcast to consumers instead of using the satellite or cable systems.

This new model provided an alternative for consumers for the digital TV system when it was introduced, he added. — Bernama

Digital TV transmission at experimental stage

Pahang: Digital television broadcasting test transmissions are now at the experimental stage utilising transmitting stations in several areas throughout the country, said Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek.

He said the ministry was committed in making the transition from analog to digital television in line with developments in world broadcasting trend which was demanding for more interactive programmes.

"When this digital TV is successfully implemented, two million sets of "top box" will be supplied free of charge to the low-income group to enable them to enjoy television broadcast better," he told reporters after visiting three polling districts in Gading, Kedaik and Keratong in conjunction with the Rompin by-election, here Friday.

Commenting on Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM), Ahmad Shabery said the national broadcasting station should broadcast more news on the rakyat (people) to ensure that their voices were heard.

In addition, RTM should create a news channels with 'breaking news' and 'real time' concept which was what the audience wanted especially with the advent of the digital era, he said.

"The 8pm prime-time concept is considered outdated and 'breaking news' is the new concept in the world of broadcasting and people want more 'live' coverage of news," he said.

He said RTM's workforce too should change their work culture by providing continuous news to the people.

However, he added, RTM had started with the new format of channel news since September last year over RTM1 known as 'BES 5-10'(Current Affairs).

Through the broadcast, RTM not only provided in-depth coverage of government policies and plans but also ongoing activities of the people throughout the country.

"In the past, 8pm was monopolised by news of the leaders, with BES 5-10 we have more time to broadcast the people's stories such as news on Felda development, the Dewan Rakyat, problems faced by fishermen and others," he said. - Bernama

Digital TV services in phases next year

Source: http://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/category/...ases-next-year/

KUANTAN: Digital television services will be available across the country by the end of next year.

Communication minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek said all districts in the east coast could receive digital transmissions by January.

MYTV Broadcasting, the company responsible for developing and managing the infrastructure for digital terrestrial broadcasting, had installed transmitters at Bukit Besar, Kuala Terengganu; Bukit Bakar, Machang, Kelantan; and Bukit Pelindung, Pahang.

“Decoders (set-top boxes) had been installed at selected homes since May 17 as part of the test phase by MYTV,” the minister told reporters.

He witnessed the installation of a decoder at a house belonging to A Rahman Abu Bakar in Kampung Rumbia, Beserah, Kuantan, on Saturday.

Ahmad Shabery said the test transmissions would be expanded to Sabah and Sarawak and then to the northern and southern parts of the peninsula followed by the Klang Valley at the end of the year.

He said two million decoders had been distributed free of charge to selected homes for the test transmissions, and they would be replaced with MYTV decoders when digital transmissions are fully operational early next year.

Ahmad Shabery said although transmissions were currently in standard definition, “it is almost equivalent to high definition”.

He said 40 broadcasters had shown interest in the platform offered by MYTV.
