hi guys. wanna ask, currently working as process engineer in glc palm oil mill. 1 year already. my jobscope is too wide, qc but not really qc (no software or qc system), process but more to management (no involvement in maintenance), safety, DOE, environment. degree in chem eng (process).

Want to find a job in o&g but i dont know where should i go. I mean I dont know what to offer in o&g. weak in thermo & heat transfer but currently i'm studying that subject myself.

Planning to improve my skills by getting autocad/design classes or any courses that may related with the industry. Any courses recommended? other than safety courses.
*
Steam Engineer certificate then only start to think about o&g. Are you with the S* company? If yes, thought their bonus great monthsss and great discount for buying the property developed by them?

Real case, someone start from boilerman and progress as Head in the dept now with Steam Engineer certs in an O&G operator. Also he freelance sometimes...

is project engineer in services company like FMC, Aker or technip = good salary?
this is not a technical position right?
*
It will be never good if the 1st thing crossing ur mind for question is the salary. If u keep thinking salary only, O&G not suitable for u.
Think about the widest prospectives and experience gained after at least 3 -5 years if u r just fresh grad or with 1-3 years experience.

I have just got an offered as assn proj engineer in a crane company. Thinking of choosing that as related to heavy industries and hence offshore/marine. Recently kinda hard to get a place in S'pore now..

My question is, what kind of technical skills I should focus on should I intend to move to ong field later on? What normally does the manager from o&g consider when getting applicants from outside o&g fields?

Thanks

Experience and correct attitude. For SG, qualifications in term of cert is a mandatory due to their recent years of more stringent regulations and CP. Also, incident cases, keyword WSH Council.

Thanks, but I wonder what type of experiences count?
For instant, I might be moving to M&E, mainly on piping and HVAC. Will piping design and project management contribute if I wanna go offshore?
*
if one always think that oil and gas is just "offshore", then better don't join sweat.gif

read more and expose yourself more into various industries and understand the flow from the reservoir until supply to the petroleum we use for vehicles, then you will know where the piping and HVAC will be put into oil & gas.

Thanks for the reply. I am currently preparing myself for the exam too biggrin.gif . What kind of engineer i can apply with that cert?  hmm.gif

S* who? my company is under fgv(not sure if glc or what  sweat.gif ) . the job is okay for now but the industry is too slow. working hard for 5 yrs only can get roughly 5k-7k salary.
*
you want to join oil & gas but do not understand how the crude oil flowing from reservoir until supply to we, the end user?

slow, that is the time to build your bullets (your qualifications, network, etc).

Early this year, I was offered a DP post.
Currently, lot of vessels in a company which is the subsidiary of an O&G operator with DP Class 1. So there is a requirement to upgrade to DP Class 2, this company which offering me this posting was tasked for this upgrading.

DP is totally not relevant to my oilfield tubular experience when was offered of this DP post. So, it is about attitude, skills and experience, and of course qualifications. Just through 2 times phone interview, I was offered directly the DP post.

It is not the 1st question, how much is the Salary which always coming out from some fresh grads.

Technip is rumoured to be downsizing its staff soon. VSS will be on the plate.

This is the first time ever that Technip will layoff some of its staff since the company was set up in early 1980's.

Earlier RWorley reduced its staff by almost to 1/3.

O&G engineering development area is certainly in the downturn.

Try visit Middle East country's refineries first whistling.gif
Is our Kerteh's refinery big? In Malaysia maybe yes. But once you put your feet in ME, they are just small boys.
Now O&G business are not easy to do especially with those mega refineries being built.
*
agreed. and they hire qualified and competent expats to become or achieve world class standard.

first of all, why do you want to change your career path. Was in the aviation industry for one year, I know hat aircraft maintenance engineer can earn handsome amount of money, with relaxed 4 days on, 4 days off. Better to stay in the industry especially if you are a Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (LAME). If you are aiming for money, you can go to middle east. Good money there also.

most only think of O&G but never consider of their existing job which can lead them to even better career!

deng the merger went on. wonder how things will start to change. i assume the hiring will be put on hold for a while.

i wonder if this merger will be 2 sides of the coin, i.e more opportunities or leads to job cuts hmm.gif  hmm.gif .hope its the latter and can join the new revolution haha

when i was in my ex-company, all staffs also received such similar e-mail announcements from CEO... when there is any rumors, there is certain degree of certainties.
around 1 year before my ex-company was divested, i was asked by my ex-manager if i would like to be transferred from KL to Singapore.
few months before official announcement of divestment, a lot of due diligence were done in the office, every week the same team or sometimes different team. after official announcement dates, i was tasked to provide all locations operations info to the due diligence company liase with HR, Finance, QHSE, Purchasing, Engineering, etc...
my existing work scopes to set-up/expand oilfield machine shop was stopped. half year to 1 year just focus on the due diligence items. one by one Top Management from the new stake holders were sent to our office. logo, website, coveralls, building, office furniture, etc were progressively changed...
looking back it was a very great learning experience as an engineer involved in the due diligence.

History repeats itself with the oil price dip and retrenchment, unfortunately most people don't bother to learn history and rush to join the industry biggrin.gif

i like your above statement smile.gif sweat.gif
keep reading similar type of people typing similar type of questions at here... and some do not understand their own strength and weaknesses keep typing the same which options to go. worst is still not get the offer letter or as intern and have a big dream.
at current uncertainty situation, it is a very good time to build/renew qualifications and networks and wait for the recovery again.
i still get my AWS last month. bonus and increment not sure yet. site allowance still deposited into my bank account.

You like to talk & manage? ho. ho. How long did u work with the contractor btw?
*
thumbup.gif

sometimes, certain people do think big ideally which is far beyond the reality like the gap between the sky and earth. it is simply easier to talk than to achieve in reality without proper qualifications and experience.
some wanna join but not willing to work shift or 12 hours daily or 7 days per week --> there is no easy life and path in order to gain the experience, no short-cut. lot of freshies just want to have easy life.
