well, seems that i'm not going to keep one after all. there's too much effort and time that I can't spend taking care of them and the set up's not adequate. Maybe in future, I'm able to grab myself a veiled. Now I'm going back to leos and fat tails.

I heard chameleons bite.. and nasty too.... but they are fragile reptiles huh.....

Saw a few times at the jungle beside my house..... until they flattened it and made it into appartments for MMU students.... wasted...

yes....in thailand the exotic animals are freaking cheap!!!!!!!!

most of them less than half the price of wut it is here in malaysia.
but problem is..after u get one..how u gonna bring it back past the Jabatan Imigresen...??? and do u wanna trouble urself jaga one fragile creature while on holiday?

But theres a way to get past imigration...hehe. Sampan back to Kota Bahru.
hehehe

Chams r real cool...
but fragile and expensive...expensive coz theres high risk or losing it.

the market called chattucak. its a biggie. u can get there using the MRT. take a ride until the end of the line. if u from main entrance, the animals section is at the west end of the market. before reaching to reptiles and others, u will c dogs, cats and some cock fights(no lucah). last time i was there about 5 shops selling reptiles. about 90% animals can b found in KL-if u know where to look. cheaper by about 30-40% depending on how u bargain. if u regular, the trader will auto less for u.

note: no need to go to bangkok for chattucak. in phuket now also have 1. fyi

from my knowledge hatyai no chattuchak but i could b wrong.

30%-40% of retail. mayb can get cheaper. price is also determined on the animals locality, import & export and various other factors.

if u go by train, i advice buying CB and hardy species. it's safer method.

if u go by flight please be careful coz unless the trader has arrange sumthin wit the authority, getting pass the airports will not be easy especially when ur panties/underwear/bra/crotch/pockets/bags/pants/shirts is full, rounded, moving about and making various sounds. re-scan will occur if they r suspicious. once 1st img and 2nd img is different in shapes, they will interogate. use lead ie plumbum container coz cant be scanned.

note: im not comfortable discussing about this topic publicly anymore. so i will end my post here. hope that help.

Nice gang you got there, Sam. Mind to share how you house them? What about humidity and such. How do you regulate all this? These are such fascinating lizards, but all the talk about how fragile they are turn me off everytime.

It's always better to talk to someone who has hands on experience!

Not too hard my friend !!

But do get a medium one ( CB will be best) as they waste away quickly ( Small one no margin for error and live feeder harder to source ie pin head crickets )
- A few days of no food will stress them to no return !!
- New enviroment , too much handling before settling down also stress them a lot

Screen mesh type enclosure is best Will post my DIY ( Some PVC pipe , wire mesh and some cable tie ) later when I get a better pic !!

They are not really a hands-on pets where you can pat them at will !!! But after some time in our care they do become quite tame and allow certain degree of handling

chameleon are display pet...not meant for handling..
they dont like ppl to handle them...they will change their color quite fast depend on the surrounding..
sam...when u wanna handle ur chameleon..did they open their mouth like wanna bite u?LOL
their coloration are fascinating!
wire mesh cages are good for them...they need good air ventilation.
they would prefer to drink dripping water from leaves...
the cage inside must have greenery...n constant water dripping in order for them to drink. hardly see chameleon drink water from water dish.
n they need misting system in it...so u will have higher humitidy...n basking lamp n uv are very important.

At the begining YES but after a few weeks/months OK just wanna climb away from you if given the chance !!!

THANKS for the tip But you dont need those constant dripping thingy ( the below substrate grow mouldy fast in our already humid climate )

In Western country the drip also act as a humidity increasing device !!!

My enclosure are outdoor the 2 plants inside ( 1 Pothos 1 Hibiscus ) help with the humidity !!!

Every evening I spray the whole enclosure to water the Chame and the plants !!

The inside !!

Added on July 24, 2008, 8:24 pm

The smaller Veiled Chame are housed in those Guppy brand plastic tank ( for now will move outdoor when they are larger )
- Peat moss used as substrate
- A pothos plant inside to climb on and as snack if required

well most of the cham come are not really healthy...
imagine long flight hour..n yet they are fragile.
if u wanna get a chameleon..
veiled chameleon is the best to start with...make sure u get a CB one and subadult size..
panther chameleon is the 2nd option.
jacksoni is quite tough to keep..n its under cites dno what..
all chameleon need license to keep rite?

Thanks for sharing the setup Sam.

Your solution seems practical considering our climate. If I may ask, what's the longest period you've kept a cham? Or is there anyone you're familiar of keeping these beauties for over 3-4 years?

Noticed that you're using mesh wire for the enclosure. Do they need moderate/good ventilation considering our tropical ambient humidity and temperature?

I know of a guy who has his Male Veiled for about 13 months (still alive ) !!! They get over heated easily as well thus the moderate/good ventilation !!

How gravid is she now? Any new pics? It'd be really something to see baby chameleons pop locally.

Eggs laid !! 44 of them !! now the long up to 7 months wait for them to pop out ( if they are fertile ) !! If they do decide to pop out around the 7 mths period may come out on April Fool's day ( as eggs deposited either 31th Aug or 1st Sept ) LOL

Fragile ?? Not really I only just started keeping them last March and they grew and breed for me in August !!

Should be better as the little one stress more easily than adults thus those imported or seen in our local market are at least so many inches in size , no smaller !!

p/s That Female laid 2 more clutch before dying in Jan 09 !! ( total I have about 100 eggs from her )

Aha , I thought so too But I do have a very good backup to rely on whenever I encounter troubles or problems !! (He started b4 me thus my decision to follow when he stated that they are not too hard to keep )

Where can i find (thinking of buying) chameleons ?
I live in Shah Alam. However, I appreciate if I can get the list of pet shops near to my home that sells this cute creature. smile.gif
Thanks in advance.

Ya best that way !! As for drinking , just spray them(the leaves above them be best) a few times a day when young and maybe once a day is enough !! I use Exo terra - explorarium and a few DIY to hold them !!

Your mentioned 4 mths (If from eggs at 4 mths they need more than just 2 full size crickets )
- Hatch till now ?
- In your care for 4 mths ?

[attachmentid=2338247]
Just a guide , picture of a Female at day 77 since out of egg !! (Male at same age will be about 20% larger)

Give a varied diet beside crickets and they will bloom and breed for you !!
