The ComingSoon.net Box Office Report has been updated with studio estimates for the weekend. Be sure to check back on Monday for final figures based on actual box office.

Paramount Pictures and Marvel Studios' Iron Man exceeded all expectations, earning a massive $100.75 million during its opening weekend domestically from 4,105 theaters and $104.2 million since debuting Thursday night, averaging $24,543 per site. Internationally, the film has also earned an incredible $96.7 million in 57 countries since it began opening Wednesday, putting its worldwide total at $201 million after just five days! The comic book adaptation, directed by Jon Favreau and starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Terrence Howard and Jeff Bridges, was the 10th biggest opening of all-time and the fourth biggest for a superhero movie. Among nonsequels, it came in behind only the first Spider-Man, which opened with $114.8 million. As far as May openings, Iron Man came in at #8, just behind X-Men: The Last Stand's $102.8 million when you look at the three-day figure (not counting Thursday night). Financed by Marvel Studios and distributed by Paramount, the movie cost about $150 million to make and $75 million to market.

more marvels to come

QUOTE
July 23, 2006 - At the very first Marvel Studios panel ever today at Comic-Con 2006, the new film powerhouse announced plans to bring three new films to the silver screen. Each will showcase recognizable Marvel heroes, and talent is already associated with each project. No dates were mentioned, but these projects will undoubtedly follow the three projects Marvel has already committed to: Ant-Man, The Incredible Hulk and Iron Man.

The first new movies announced at the panel was Captain America, which has already seen one film adaptation.

After that, Marvel Studios announced plans to make a Nicky Fury movie. Andrew Marlowe is set to pen the tale of the cigar-chomping leader of S.H.I.E.L.D. Marlowe's previous credits include End of Days and Air Force One.

The third project announced is Thor, based on the Nordic Avenger.

At the first ever Marvel Studios panel at this weekend's Comic-Con, President of Production Kevin Feige made statements that indicate Marvel is headed in a direction that will lead to a full-scale, live action Avengers movie.

The studio announced it's starting production on three new projects: Captain America, Nick Fury and Thor. All three figure heavily into the Avengers mythos, as do The Hulk and Iron Man, both of which already have movies in production.

In the past, an Avengers movie would have been unlikely, not only because movie technology was not advanced enough to handle some of the complicated characters, but because rights to various Marvel entities were scattered among several studios.

"Now that it's all under one roof, it could be done," said Feige. Jon Favreau, in a separate interview, stated that he always thought of Iron Man 3 as Iron Man: The Avengers.

jus his thought, how can there be 3 when they're not sure how well one is gonna be recieved
July 23, 2006 - Coming off of Swingers, one might not thought of Jon Favreau as a perfect fit to direct the screen adaptation of Iron Man, based on the popular Marvel comic. But at today's Marvel Studios panel, it was obvious that fans thought Favreau was the right man to bring the saga of the armored Avenger to the big screen. When asked why he chose to direct Iron Man, he said, "Clearly, Ant-Man was taken, so what's left? What's the best of the rest?"

Throughout the panel, the director shared his vision for the story arc of the film, the character of billionaire playboy Tony Stark, the man behind the armor, and the look of the suit itself. "We'll start with the gray armor," he said, citing that "you can't build a Lamborghini in a cave." This is in reference to the origin of the original suit, which Stark pieced together while being held prisoner in foreign lands (in this case, his imprisonment will likely take place in Afghanistan). From there, Favreau wants to evolve the look to the red and gold comics fans have become accustomed to, and ultimately incorporate the idea of the suit as weapons platform, a la War Machine. The director foresees several suits of armor throughout the film, and the look will evolve if multiple installments of the saga are told.

Talking about the feel of the armor, Favreau stated, "There is a sort of Robocop-like quality this character could have… I like the weight and mass and power," adding that this Iron Man would never be about martial arts "Power Rangers" moves, and instead all about heavy metal and heavy weapons.

For guidance on the suit design, Favreau turned to Iron Man artist Adi Granov. The digital painter designed a special teaser image exclusively for the Con that shows an idea of what the armor might look like. Of import is the center light on Iron Man's chest, which is round, rather than triangular, like in some Iron Man designs. In the teaser image, most of Iron Man is shrouded in shadow, as the final design has not yet been determined.

Favreau got a round of applause for stating that he hates the overuse of CG in films, but went on to say, "I always stay away from CG, but if there's any character that lends itself to CG… it's Iron Man." The trick, he said, is that "you have to treat something false as real in order to make it real."

To help inform the project, the director has been re-reading the comics and using anime sources like Ghost in the Shell, Appleseed and Neon Genesis Evangelion to get an idea of how technology interacts with an organic environment.

Favreau described the storyline as a combination of James Bond and a Tom Clancy novel, deeply embroiled in the geopolitical issues of our time. Since he sees the project as a number of films, he has opted to incorporate the "demon in a bottle" alcoholism storyline in future films after the character has been introduced and developed.

Finally, Favreau revealed that the villain that Iron Man will face in the film is the Mandarin. He also hinted that he might reprise his Daredevil role of lawyer Foggy Nelson for this film. The movie will be the first released by the newly-formed Marvel Studios, and it is set to hit theaters in May, 2008
If I'm not mistaken Tom Cruise already rejected the offer to play Anthony Stark.

The guy being rumoured now is Oded Fehr.

Not too bad IMO.

Anyway, the villain for the film has been confirmed.

Iron Man Villain Confirmed!

July 22, 2006

Iron Man director Jon Favreau confirmed at the San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday that the villain in the movie will be fan-favorite Mandarin!

The Mandarin is one of the world's greatest scientific geniuses who is seeking world domination. Although The Mandarin has no superhuman powers, he is a superb athlete with tremendous skill in the various martial arts. For weapons, he uses ten rings he wears on his fingers that respond to his mental commands.

Marvel Studios has set a May 2, 2008 release date for Iron Man. Paramount Pictures will distribute the film.

OMG... more crappy superhero movies??? doh.gif X-men deteriorated throughout the 3 films, Fantastic Four was yucks... Superman Returns (ok, it's DC, but still superhero) was absolutely unbearable... And I guess I don't need to elaborate on the Punisher who punished us to watching it.

Seriously, the only superhero movie that captured the essence of the character was Spiderman... Batman Begins was good, only to be spoiled by the absurd villain.... Microwave to evaporate water?? Might as well shoot microwaves at human beings..

I was so looking forward to Oded Fehr playing Iron Man. rclxms.gif
Robert Downey Jr is a good actor thumbup.gif , but for Tony Stark I think Oded better lah.
He has this dominating on-screen presence. Those eyes I think.
Loved him in a Showtime mini-series, Sleeper Cell (even though he played a terrorist).

got some news

QUOTE
Is Tony Stark falling for Jean Grey? There's a new rumor -- albeit a fairly shaky one -- that X-Men actress Famke Janssen has been cast as Tony Stark's love interest in the forthcoming Iron Man movie that will star Robert Downey, Jr. in the title role.

According to a couple of random emails sent to the Canmag.com website (we said it was shaky), Janssen was recently cast by Iron Man director Jon Faverau, with whom she has worked several times before.

What do we think? It wouldn't be a bad bit of casting, but take this rumor with a grain of salt until we hear more.

Another salt-worthy rumor going around is that Hustle & Flow actor Terrence Howard is in talks to play Tony Stark's friend Jim Rhodes (a.k.a. War Machine). We'll have more on all these rumors as news breaks.

Terrence Howard Set for Iron Man

QUOTE
Terrence Howard is set to join Robert Downey Jr. in Iron Man, reports Variety.

The Jon Favreau-directed film is the first to be financed through an arrangement that Marvel Studios formed with Merrill Lynch. Paramount Pictures releases the film May 2, 2008.

Howard will play Jim "Rhodey" Rhodes, the confidante of Iron Man's alter ego, Tony Stark. Rhodes, a high ranking military officer and aviator, steers the team that develops the robotic suit that allows the sickly Stark to fly around and battle bad guys.

In the comic, Rhodes' character gets his own armored suit and evolves into an occasionally antagonistic character called War Machine. That development seems likely to be saved for the sequel, though, as Iron Man will battle villain the Mandarin when shooting begins in February in L.A.

"The suit is purely an innovative creation, so this is Marvel meets Tom Clancy technology," Marvel Studios production president Kevin Feige said. "Having the best actors for the key roles allows them to inhabit the hyperkinetic reality of this world."

Gwyneth Paltrow to Star in Iron Man

QUOTE
Marvel Studios announced today that it has signed on Academy Award(R) winner Gwyneth Paltrow to join the cast of the highly-anticipated summer 2008 event film Iron Man. Paltrow will take on the role of Virginia "Pepper" Potts, personal secretary and confidant to Tony Stark aka Iron Man. The film is slated to hit theaters May 2, 2008.

Paltrow will portray billionaire industrialist and genius inventor Tony Stark's indispensable personal assistant, Virginia "Pepper" Potts. Pepper is an invaluable resource to Stark Industries, and one of the few people in Tony's life who can go toe-to-toe with him, occasionally acting as his conscience and working to keep his priorities straight as he secretly defends the world as the armored hero known as Iron Man. Below the surface, Tony and Pepper share a deep attraction for one another although neither is willing to admit it.

Samuel L. Jackson will be appearing in the movie as NICK FURY.
QUOTE
Samuel L. Jackson will be shooting scenes as iconic super spy Nick Fury on the set of Iron Man today. It doesn't say how big his role is, but we would assume it's a cameo of sorts.

What is also interesting, is that Nick Fury was one of the films Marvel Studios announced as one of the projects for its new independent film slate. The movie, based on the superhero with military roots, has screenwriter Andrew Marlowe attached. Will Jackson's role be expanded into a full movie? We'll have to wait and see.

Interestingly, the Hollywood version looks more "mecha"-fied. The original comic version looks like a reject of the '80s mangas.

This fan-made teaser poster looks okay though.

Looking good. The trailer really did capture the essence of Iron Man, and Downey does look like a rich and ragged playboy. Nevertheless, looks like the movie might be flooded with excessive CGIs which would probably make the movie look cartoonish, like Fantastic 4 did.

Ironman 2008 gonna be highly anticipated. Casting wise, they chose the right people to play all the characters involved. I love to see Robert Downey play the role. I think this movie strength will be in the CGI, just watching the trailer was breathtaking especially the flying part. Oh boy, even F-18 couldn't catch up to Ironman. My only worries is in the storyline. Although, watching the trailer does have its striking resemblance to the previous Ironman Animated movie. I just hope its gonna be entertaining. Otherwise, it'll just be a fun no-brainer movie like most marvel movies are. tongue.gif

Hell yeah !! It does resemble the animated series, especially the part where Stark built the original Ironman armour.

The CGI is decent, yet nothing spectacular as Transformers has already showed us how realistic machines can be created digitally. What I'm more interested in is whether the movie can capture the essence of the characters, like how Batman Begins and Spiderman did. We as viewers need to see Robert Downey as Stark, not him ACTING as Stark. I don't expect much from the story line since super hero movies are mainly character-based more than plot-based, apart from the compulsory action scenes of course.

Oh yeah, those are YF-22 Raptors, not FA-18 Hornets biggrin.gif

This is marvel writing their own scripts and making the director obey it without any objection.

lets hope this is going to be good.

i did. It was AWESOME!

nothing much to be said about the plot. if u watched the trailer, everything's pretty much there already.

as for the cast:
- RDJ was PERFECT for the role. exudes maturity & charisma. a likeable hero. i think the ladies will love him too.. tongue.gif
- Paltrow was decent as the love interest. not as great as Kirsten Dunst but better than Katie Holmes.
- Jeff Bridges was just ok for a villain (still cannot beat Willem Defoe biggrin.gif)
- Jim Rhodes was kinda 'soft' though. i'd expected him to be more macho..

The Mark II suit is SOOOO sexy. damn i gotta get me one of those! oh ya FX are damn nice. this movie would look great on Blu-ray.. drool.gif

what i didn't like:

forgot to add. fans of mecha or power armor should give it a try also. the suit looks that DAMN good. if you're not into Iron Man, then watch it for the suit. worth the price of admission alone..

and this coming from someone who doesn't read Iron Man comics (i read The Avengers sometimes happy.gif)

By the way, don't forget to stay for the after credit scene.

Nah, the movie was barely good, just decent. I thought the first 10 minutes was horrible, why even do the flashback? Dumb.

The action sequence was so minimal, I wanted more laugh.gif Robert was very comfortable playing the Tony Stark role and Paltrow wub.gif Other than that, a typical summer flick.

I guess it should has 2nd episode.
It has another suit (silver color) in the movie. I think it called "war machine".
My friend says the "black guy" suppose to wear it in the comic, but in movie he doesnt. So I guess 2nd episode will talk about "war machine" too

Yes, The silver suit is probably going to be modified into War Machine later on. It's used by James Rhodes

Yeah... Damn, I thought Lt. Rhodes gonna pilot the War Machine when he looks at the Mark II. but he did not... bout the secret revealing thing, I think the script writer had intended to make the time-line around the Civil war era.

Did anyone spotted Stan Lee? He's the Hefner in the movie. LOL...

Added on May 1, 2008, 12:58 amanyway, thumbs up for me. It's better compare to some other Marvel movie made (eg. Elektra, Daredevil, etc) but still not as good as Spider-man 1 & 2 (3 not included). The cast was perfect, especially for Tony Stark, "Pepper" Potts & Iron Monger. The movie brings me back to the nostalgic time. ah...

I have a gripe, not about the movie (which I thought was awesome, btw), but about the cinema I watched this movie at.

TGV Bukit Raja Klang, when the credits are rolling and there are people in the audience sitting and waiting for the extra scene...DO NOT CUT OFF THE REEL! OMFG this is the second time it has happened! It is damned bloody annoying ok!

I wont watch movies at TGV Bukit Raja again.. shakehead.gif

It is really called "Iron Man" by Black Sabbath from 1970, very probably inspired by the comic character.

James Rhodes is indeed War Machine and in the comic he uses Stark's Mark II suit of armor which Stark build to improves the Iron Man suit. But I went like WTF? Since when did Tony Stark has a personal assistant and in love with her? Where's Jarvis, his personal butler? Instead Jarvis is a computer system.

I also lol'd at him saying "Next time, baby..." when he looked at MkII armor.

Since when he was in love with his assistant Pepper Potts?Since the 60s, friend smile.gif

I lol'd too, in that scene they were teasing us with the possibility of War Machine joining the fray, then Rhodes himself telling us "Next time, baby..." laugh.gif

In my 9.45pm screening at Cineleisure they abruptly cut the credits right after the movie ends and played the Nick Fury part, then resume the credits.Yeah they had to interrupt the song and the credits probably because many people still leave the theater before the lights get back on to indicate the movie is really finished.

Btw this movie is simply incredible.Marvel studios nailed this one right at the head.Everything was executed very well.My new favorite superhero movie thumbup.gif

still think the MkII suit looks better. It was shiny & sliverish with the glow form the chest. After MkIII was made with the red & yellow, it doesn't look as nice as the 2nd prototype. Oh well, MkII gonna turned into grey & black for WM. There goes the silver armor.

I just watched the movie. Freaking awesome. I'd watch it another time.

The only thing that baffles is that, how does he counter the G-force while flying? Seeing the speed and stunts he does while up in the air, i think even the craziest Russian pilot maneuvering a Su-30 would pass out.

I thought G-Force is there only because the weight of the jet plane? The suit is part of him, it should be minimal.

@.@ Agree.. Orang Besi is not funny also. If Charlie's Angel's (Perempuan2 Charlie yg Cantik) Now that's worth laughing. Luckily I'm not same cinema as u. LOL

And regarding the show I watched today.. I LOVE IT!!! rclxms.gif rclxms.gif I don't know who's the director is but then I love it more than Transformers. Seriously! Transformers have the effects but then it's draggy at parts.
In this movie, good effects, fighting scenes, nice humours, nicely written script. I am seriously in love with this show. It sets a new standard for old based comic book/cartoon movie. I'm gonna get the DVD later on and watch it again ^^

Don't even need to compare Transformers to Iron Man, Transformers has nothing on Iron Man.Transformers went so far off the mark to entertain the casual audience, the Transformers themselves are sideshows to 2 teenagers' romance adventure. The Decepticons themselves become so awfully generic that barely anybody can recognize them at all.Michael Bay obviously doesn't know/care enough about Transformers.

Iron Man on the other hand is a shining example of how it should be done.Very true to the comics (of course with some necessary tweaks for the big screen) and yet doesn't alienate the casual audience cool2.gif

It retails at 99.90, but from what I could gather, in most parts of KL all have been snapped up.

Subang Parade TRU still has some, but dont expect them to last!

Watched it @ 30/4, booked tickets 2 days in advance. Yep it was awesome though lacking more pew pew action tongue.gif. I never read the comic book version, only watched the 94/95 TV cartoon versions so i can't really comment much on how aligned the movie is to the original story. ;X

Finally one my my childhood fav superhero got his live action adaption ... Now to wait for the other 2 parts. I'm buying the DVD for this when it is out! thumbup.gif

Anyway I watched it yesterday, worth every penny, this is on par with Spiderman.

As for Hellboy 2, about time they got the name right, even my indonesian friend laughed about the Super Sapiens after I told him.

Awesome show... I reckon "superhero" movies are getting better nowadays. The 3 best ones in my book now would be Spiderman 2, Batman Begins and Ironman. The Dark Knight should be really cool as well.

Wikipedia:
The film ends with a press conference about the battle. Although advised by an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. to claim Iron Man is his personal body guard, Tony Stark instead announces that he is Iron Man. After the closing credits, Stark is greeted by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), director of S.H.I.E.L.D., who tells him about the Avenger Initiative.

The film's stars have signed on for two sequels, the story of which Favreau has planned to depict Stark's alcoholism, Rhodes becoming War Machine, and the introduction of the villainous Mandarin. Downey also cameos as Stark in the upcoming The Incredible Hulk.

Exactly, sometimes not to say im not proud of learning malay, but the direct translation to me to Orang Besi is way too funny. Man i love the movie. I love how Starks build from scratch to the finishing product. Man i love that shinny suit. And of course am waiting for Rhodes become war machine. I love it when he says 'Next time baby'. Wow thats amazing.

Man, i just love the technologies implemented in iron man. I love it. Though the movie title should say Iron man : The beginning. As we know there will be sequels.

Engineer: that is impossible!
Obie: Tony Stark built it in a cave! he built it from scrap!

yes, it uses sound. more like a very high frequency thing which when you hear, your brain reacts to it and it will cause temporary numbness i think.

btw, in the end after the press conference, after all the cast listing is out, is there anything else to the movie?
maybe a preview of the second sequel, if there is..

went right out after the movie coz dont want to get squeeze in the crowd.

so anybody here seen Iron Man on IMAX - want to watch it a second time, from a different cinema, but i heard its only 35mm, not the 70mm they usually use. don't want to go all the way to KL to watch if its the same like a normal cinema.

I just watched this show and I have a different opinion. Its an enjoyable show, the wit humour was great, starks was acted and written very very well. The suit is really cool, and the supporting actors are up par too.

Here's the bad part of the show, the action. There's minimal action, and even the action scenes are mostly forgettable. They are very very short, no new super cool scenes, it just doesnt excite, even the much character driven batman had a good chase scene to go. Honestly the best action parts are in the trailer, that's how bad it is. And the real iron man suit mk2 only gets a few instances to show what it can do and those parts are short

The show was enjoyable and that's solely due to stark being such a fun character the action well is average at best .

will they make a sequal where menteri america, perempuan hitam, orang besar, wanita kecil, dan lelaki@parang and ironman is a team? (forgot their name ,seen the avenger movie in HBO)

the plot's somewhat cliche. it's the same formula used for any 1st movie of a superhero movie series. they seriously need to change the way to present this kinda plot. i won't wanna be watching Captain America in 2009 with yet another similar presentation.

i tot Jon Favreau did a mediocre job only directing an action flick seeing his past accomplishments were movies like ELF and ZATHURA.

if the movie was given to another director with a more action movie background, it would've been a hell lot more spectacular and exciting. i saw the entire movie with a very familiar feeling. it was the same feeling i had while watching Ang Lee's Hulk. i hope they change the dir for the sequel.

He didn't direct "Daredevil" and "Wimbledon". Get your facts right. He did direct "Elf", and it was great movie. The only big budget film he directed before was "Zathura" which me and my wife love it.

And I love all Favreau's work so far. I also love him as an actor, ""The Break-Up", etc and of course, "Iron Man". thumbup.gif

His appearance in TV sitcoms were fun too. biggrin.gif

Watched it for the second time in 2 days. ^^.. Still really enjoyable to me as I rank this no 1 movie for the year for me for now. Can't wait for Indiana Jones as they have old great time actor Harrisson Ford in it. Hehe..

Guys.. you all realised that Ms Potts is driving Mr Stark R8 to the Seksyen 16 and yet at the same time, when iron man fly out from his mansion, Major Rhodes also ride his audi R8 out from his house. Weird. ahah

And seriously.. the more I watch Ironman, it reminds me of COD4 (Call of Duty) game. Hehe.. Esp the part where Tony is being captured. Except, in this case the hero is Ironman. Hehe.. Wonder what material he used as no bullet can penetrate him though, even the Raptor F22 got destroy cz langgar dia. Just wondering if his Gold Titanium alloy is that super strong. Haha..

Damn, is the scene after the credits worth watching then? I hate waiting 10 freaking minutes to watch a 5-second clip.

I waited 10 mins just to hear the little radio chatter after cloverfield. Like "WTF THAT'S IT?? I WAITED 10 MINS FOR THAT???".

Personally, if you want to see Samuel L Jackson in an eye patch looking uber cool, YES. If you aren't a comic book fan, YouTube it. But I'm just afraid the cineplex you go to doesn't show, you'd go MOTHERF**----!

Well the one I went shoo us out of the cinema, although I am waiting patiently with some other audiences i guess, but the staff there keep blinking the cinema flash light, hinting us to leave the cinema, and when we ignore it, they start coming to you and shoo you...

Did you realize that when pepper pull out tony power source, the tony chest actually a bit fake. I will guess the chest is a fake one which attach to tony head, meaning tony was sitting straight but the chest was leaning 45 degree.

Mine shown directly after the 5 secs the credits are shown. Then after the clip the credits continues.

I saw the so-called bonus scene in Cineleisure... Strange that not all cinemas are getting identical reels... unsure.gif

Anyway, it's a great movie, I enjoyed it very much... I have to say that the movie soundtrack was AWESOME! thumbup.gif

I'm not going back there for a movie again. shakehead.gif

Some cinemas edit the reel so that the extra scene appears briefly after the credits start to roll. Thay way the viewers dont have to wait till the end, and the staff can start clearing up the place sooner. laugh.gif

Gonna pre-order this as my birthday present this September.. tongue.gif 'Kotobukiya Iron Man Mark III Fine Art Statue'

QUOTE
"Inspired by the original promotional one-sheet for the film, the armored avenger stands tall as 1/6th scale Fine Art Statue (approximately 13 inches tall).  Stan Winston Studios fabricated the suit for the film based on designs by comic artist extraordinaire Adi Granov, and every detail of Iron Man’s Mark III armor has been faithfully replicated by the craftsmen at Kotobukiya.  Kotobukiya has been working from reference provided by Marvel Studios, the level of mechanical detail is matched only by the personality conveyed by Iron Man’s heroic stance.

Manufactured in cold cast porcelain and coated with metallic paint, the Iron Man Fine Art Statue even features multiple LED lights: eyes, Repulsor Ray palms, and the Unibeam on his chest.  The base is ornamented with a sculpted Iron Man film logo on a three-dimensional realization of his chest symbol, and painted in the Mark I color scheme.  Each statue is individually numbered on the bottom of the base as part of a Limited Edition. Trivia for Iron Man
 • Rachel McAdams was Jon Favreau's first choice to play Pepper Potts, but she turned the role down.
 • During pre-production, Robert Downey Jr. set up an office next to Jon Favreau's office, to discuss his role with Favreau and to be more involved in the film's screen writing.
 • Jon Favreau was originally going to direct Captain America (2009) in the manner of a superhero comedy adventure, but he instead chose to direct this film and give it a more serious tone. Ironically, Nick Cassavetes, who was chosen to direct that film, had been filled in to direct this film in December 2004.
 • Jon Favreau describes the film as "a kind of independent film-espionage thriller crossbreed; a Robert Altman-directed Superman (1978), with shades of Tom Clancy novels, James Bond films, RoboCop (1987), and Batman Begins (2005)."
 • In the comics, Tony Stark participated (and became Iron Man) in the Vietnam War; later this was retconned to the Gulf War. In this film, the character's origin was retconned to Afghanistan, as Jon Favreau did not wish to make the film a period piece but instead give it a realistic contemporary look.
 • During shooting, Jon Favreau preferred improvisation in dialogue scenes, calling back to his Robert Altman influence.
 • Tony Stark drives an Audi R8 in the film, as part of a promotion deal Marvel Studios made with the Audi Automobile Company. Two other vehicles, the Audi A6 sedan and the Audi Q7 SUV, also make an appearance in the film.
 • An Aaton 35mm camera was accidentally run over by a tank during a shoot.
 • In October 1999, Quentin Tarantino was approached to write and direct the film. Later, Joss Whedon, a big fan of the comic book, was in negotiations to direct the film in June 2001. In December 2004, Nick Cassavetes was hired as a director, with the film to release in 2006, but everything fell through. Finally, Jon Favreau was hired as director.
 • Nicolas Cage and Tom Cruise were interested in playing Iron Man. Cruise in particular was going to act in and produce the film.
 • Robert Downey Jr., Terrence Howard's father, composer Ramin Djawadi and Stan Winston are among the film's crew who are fans of Iron Man. Downey himself is such a big fan of Iron Man he swears to make 15 films if possible about him. Jeff Bridges and Faran Tahir have also read some of the comics.
 • Stan Lee, the creator of Iron Man, had originally based Tony Stark on Howard Hughes, whom he felt was "one of the most colourful men of our time: an inventor, an adventurer, a multimillionaire, a ladies man and finally a nutcase." Robert Downey Jr. further described his portrayal of Stark as "a challenge of making a wealthy, establishmentarian, weapons-manufacturing, hard-drinking, womanizing prick into a character who is likable and a hero."
 • According to Ramin Djawadi, Tony Stark's different moods, as performed by Robert Downey Jr., was the inspiration the Iron Man scores in the film.
 • To prepare for his role as Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr. spent five days a week weight training and practiced martial arts to get into shape.
 • The rapper Ghostface Killah, who has been a long-time fan of Iron Man (he took the names of Iron Man and Tony Stark; he also titled his 1996 album "Ironman" and uses lyrics and images related to Iron Man comics/animated series), makes an appearance in this film as a Dubai tycoon.
 • All three sets of Iron Man's armour was designed by Phil Saunders and Adi Granov (a comic book artist from the "Iron Man" comic). They were then constructed by Stan Winston Studios.
 • The Iron Man Mark I armour weighed 90 pounds.
 • An animatronic puppet of the Iron Monger was built for the film by Stan Winston Studios. It stood 10 feet tall and weighed 800 pounds, and was built on a set of gimbals to simulate walking. It required five operators to run it.
 • When Robert Downey Jr. was carrying out motion-capture work on the film, he would sometimes wear the helmet, sleeves and chest of the Iron Man armour over the motion-capture suit to realistically portray Iron Man's movements.
 • Terrence Howard was cast as James Rhodes, as Jon Favreau felt he could also portray War Machine admirably. To prepare for his role, Howard visited the Nellis Air Force Base on March 16 2007, where he ate with the Base's airmen and observed the routines of HH-60 Pave Hawk rescue helicopters and F-22 Raptor jets.
 • To prepare for his role as Obadiah Stane, Jeff Bridges read some of the "Iron Man" comic books that featured Stane, and grew a goatee and shaved his head (which he said was something he always wanted to do).
 • Comic book writer Stan Lee, as always, has a cameo in the live-action film of his creation Iron Man. He plays the man with three blondes whom Tony Stark mistakes for Hugh M. Hefner. He later mentioned that it was his most fun cameo.
 • In the Ultimate Marvel Comics series, the character of Nick Fury is portrayed as African-American, with his look and personality tailored after actor Samuel L. Jackson, all carried out with the actor's explicit permission. Jackson, himself a comic book fan, plays Fury in this film.
 • Jon Favreau shot the film in California, as he felt that too many superhero films had been set on the East Coast, particularly in New York City.
 • An early draft of the script revealed Tony Stark to be the creator of Dr. Otto Octavius's tentacles from Spider-Man 2 (2004).
 • 400 extras were meant to be filmed standing at Tony Stark's press conference, but Robert Downey Jr. suggested they ought to sit down, as that would be more realistic and comfortable.
 • According to Jon Favreau, it was difficult to find a proper opponent for Iron Man to face, since he wanted the film to remain grounded in reality as much as possible. It was decided to have a foe in the film who would serve as a parallel of Stark (i.e. an armoured opponent). Well-known enemies like the Titanium Man and the Crimson Dynamo were considered, but finally the lesser-known Iron Monger, Obadiah Stane, was chosen as Iron Man's adversary (Stane, as well as possessing his own armour, is also a business contemporary of Stark).
 • Marvel Studios' first self-financed movie.
 • As a tribute to Howard Hughes, who inspired Iron Man, production was mainly based in the former Hughes Company soundstages in Playa Vista. The scene where the Iron Man Mark III armour was created was filmed in the area where Hughes assembled the H-4 Hercules airplane (which holds the record for being the largest plane ever built).
 • Marvel and Paramount approached the CMT show 'Trick My Truck' to select a Truck driver and trick his rig with the Ultimate Ironman makeover. Lance Burk was the lucky driver to be selected. When finished the exterior of the truck was painted to look like Iron Man's armor, led lights were put everywhere, the engine compartment was tricked out, jet thrusters (not real ones obviously) were attached to the back, and a copy of Iron Man's chest plate was attached to the back under a crafted sign that said Iron Man. The inside of the truck was refurnished to look like Tony Stark's lab, complete with a monster sound and video system.
 • The cave that imprisons Tony Stark was a 150-200 yard-long set, which had built-in movable forks to allow greater freedom for the film's crew. It also had an air conditioning system installed, as production designer J. Michael Riva had learnt that remote caves are actually very cold.
 • Production designer J. Michael Riva researched on objects found in prison which could be improvised and used for other purposes (for instance a sock used to make tea), to provide more verisimilitude to the film.
 • Jon Favreau chose Industrial Light & Magic to provide the film's VFX after watching Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007) and Transformers (2007).
 • The film's composer Ramin Djawadi's favourite musical score is the "Kickass" theme, because he composed it according to "a rhythm very much like a machine."
 • Most of the exterior scenes set in Afghanistan were filmed at Olancha Sand Dunes. There, the crew had to endure two days of 40-60 mph winds.
 • Jon Favreau advised composer Ramin Djawadi to keep the core of the music on heavy guitar, which he felt suited Iron Man best. Djiwadi composed the music on a heavy guitar before arranging it for the orchestra to perform.
 • According to Terrence Howard, he and Robert Downey Jr. competed physically on the set: "I'm 40-50 pounds heavier than him, so I'm lifting and I push up about 225 and knocked it out ten times. Robert wanted to go about 235, and he did it, so I push it up to about 245... Robert and his competitive *ss almost tore my shoulder trying to keep up with him!"
 • An early draft of the script had Howard Stark, Iron Man's father, be a ruthless industrialist who becomes the War Machine, with the two having to fight it out.
 • An early draft of the script had the Mandarin appear in the film, re-imagined as an Indonesian terrorist.
 • Gwyneth Paltrow only needed to travel 15 minutes to get to the studio. She claimed that this is a part of the reason she took the role, as she could be home with her two children during the entire shoot.

What the hell is wrong with Rachel McAdams? This isn't the first time she's rejected big roles. She's like the Heath Ledger (RIP) of Hollywood, picking Indie stuff over these roles. She's way hotter than Mrs. Coldplay. Loved her in Red Eye, Family Stone and Notebook.

Shrapnels are little tiny shards of the bomb shredding that it seems have gone into stark's bloodstream. Then, by using electromagnetic waves, it repels the shrapnels from getting to stark's heart and kill him (since the shrapnels are metal and affected by magnet)

But I don't understand is the shrapnel can get to stark's kidney/liver/brain. Won't that kill him too? laugh.gif

I would say that its not as good as Spiderman 2 and not as good as Batman Begins, but better than Spidey 3 coz i was very dissapointed with Spidey 3... Spidey 3 was WAY below my expectations... maybe on par with Spidey 1...

but watever it is, this is one awesome movie....

The movie was good but nothing awesome. Robert downey was expectedly great, the CGI was great, but it lacked action, which it does not compensate with its so-called characterizations. It feels like a 100% summer blockbuster movie, which isnt something I 100% expected reading some of the reviews, it is no where near as different as batman begins or ang lee's hulk.

however like most comic book movies, it sets up nicely for a sequel.

I will settle for 7/10. 7.5 tops.

I personally like his 3D hologram drawing / design board. The part where he uses the recycle bin is cool.

Actually, to those who follow IRON MAN comics, what kind of technology is there that prevents the human inside the suit from getting hurt eg. punched or thrown or falling down or crushed?

Or is all just make believe that there is like a super airbag or suspension system inside?

not so sure about the super airbag/suspension system..
but there were times in the comics when stark got injured so badly that his armor automatically injects painkillers to his body..
also..in the latest issue..stark kinda got 'upgraded' with extremis implant...
enabling him to control machine/tech by thoughts and can heal fast like wolverine does..

i just saw the movie today

i noticed some of the scenes are cut.

the sex scene is removed for obvious reasons.

Another scene which i don't understand why it is cut, where Tony hopped on to the humvee and one of the soldiers takes a photo with him,and they got ambushed.

It just shows the humvee ran into some IED and instantly skips to the part where Yinsen performing an operation on Tony.

Did u enter the cinema late? The ambush scene (along with the soldier chatting etc) was shown prior to the 36 HOURS AGO sequence. (Before the ORANG BESI title goes out). After Tony gave the jericho demo, hopped into the funvee, they revert back to the scene prior to the ambush and then straight to yinsen scene (this is where u think they cut the scene).

but doesn't anyone feels strange about how the movie ended? isn't in the comic tony stark says that the iron man is his body guard? and he constantly deny that he is iron man?

it would be interesting to see how the story would developed from this point onwards. will it focus more on SHIELD and AVENGERS???

i tink during its transformation into ironman in his garage is more stimulating fun than transformers' cuz trans one too fast n the metallic in IM is more realistic (IMO) so its quite song...the director very smart to emphasize tis part in IM transformation....moreover IM has good script, n fighting scene not too slow or too fast. Trans one just too fast (for me, myb im old, eye cant catch lol)

The transformation in the garage looks like a Starcraft 2 Marine putting on his armour in the SC2 announcement video.

that's the way tony stark should be anyway..
even in the comics he became Ironman when he was in mid 30's or something..
he didn't exactly become superhero at young age like spiderman does.. rolleyes.gif

during that time(60's), they didnt made many YOUNG heroes for no particular reason.
they have mature or middle age hero, eg :THOR, CAP AMERICA, SUPERMAN, JUSTICE LEAGUE, BADMAN, ULTRAMAN
spiderman started the trend of young heroes, check in wikipedia for more information, and stan lee custume of spidernan covered spiderman's face because he was a teen.

I find iron man to be gay in a few scene like when his fren took a assault rifle and went running wild shooting blanks upwardsjust to buy time for tony stark to finish his suit. another was when tony was running in the desert and u may notice his swining arm gesture is similar to how gay walk in real life... not bad mouthing it but i find it weird y they like to make comic movies not so serious...at least it wasn't a bad marvel movie.

i have lots of gay friends, and they'd be offended by ur remark. gays DONT have a specific "walk". they walk just as any other person.

tony stark is eccentric. google the word to understand more.

1) how is that gay?
2) i think it was meant to signify that he had been walking for hours with no food and water and he is really really really tired...
