how to remove the ads:

1. Find the file C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\Cache\urls.xml
2. Clear its content and save it (as an empty file).
3. Make the file Read Only.

the ads are gone, but the white empty space still remains there. let's hope someone will come up with a better solution
