Are you on stock? From your post, I'm assuming is stock. Yes, to change kernel, you need to unlock bl and root. Unlocking bootloader will clear everything in your phone.

I'm not sure about the kernel, but I don't have this problem with any custom kernel (granted, I did not stay on stock for long, 1 hour only I think )
For the google apps, (if you're rooted) try reflash gapps? then update them.

Disadvantages in what terms? Apps/software? Hardware?
If fm radio (btw, hardware) is one of the criteria you finding for in a phone, then to me N5 is not for you.
If you're not the techie-type person / do not wish to root, flash custom , then to me N5 is not for you.
If you rely on very good camera software, then yes, camera is one of the disadvantages (I find the camera fine though)
If you want to use other manufacturers bloatwares, then to me N5 is not for you. Regarding this, I remember there was 1 user here complain that N5 lack those features because he was comparing to TouchWiz. Some of the features he wants, can be in form of app/custom kernel, etc.

Biggest disadvantage to me: Not dual speaker
Such disappointment when I found out only 1 speaker.

ART is smooth and when I was on ART, most of my apps did not crash.

Now am on dalvik with the dalvik/bionic patches.

From my experience, battery more friendly on ART (for me).
With the patches, dalvik is as smooth as ART.
