we have (that i know of):

brand name: Cheese Denim
Main shop:The Yard (ss15, subang jaya)

Brand Name: Ceremony Fine Works
Main shop: the smokeshack (Wangsa Niaga)

Brand Name: Tarik Jeans
Shops that selling premium denim:
Kronoz - Fahrenheit 88, KL
UGS - Lvl 3, Sg. Wang, KL
Zolo - Menara Campbell, KL
Nusantara Denim - ss15, Subang Jaya.
Bread and Butter - lolz
im not sure if there are others but im sure i missed out some of them....

and there's a couple of people who are producing denim in a very limited numbers... and im not too sure myself if he made his jeans for public or self-satisfaction....
*
Seems that malaysia market is expanding..
I myself love denim jeans and especially vintage jeans. but due to the fact that the prices of premium jeans or vintage jean ( repro) are really killing.
I see that Bread and butter in Pavillion are selling mostly True Religion and Evisu. yea?
By the way what is so special about True Religion? except worn by celebrity. and i dont really see that their jeans are of selvedge.

based on previous thread, ive read that evisu is outsourcing to china and macau.
so if you wanna buy ori evisu even though it is made in china just buy at the boutique la.
dont buy from mudah or other people unless you know and trust the seller.
*
thanks for the information. I guess this make evisu more affordable.

Opinion from sifu, why is there fake samurai, flathead, etc... Come complete with selvage and only cost rm100 to rm 200? Is it so cheap to produce a selvage denim from a shutter loom?

leg twist is part of raw denim/selvedge is part of the allure. some people desire that look for the fades.

if you dont fancy it, try broken twill denim. left hand twill will also counter the leg twist if im not mistaken.
selvedge denim can also be source from countries like bangladdesh. lower production cost plus lower source cotton (non-zimbabwe cotton or non-texas cotton) can also produce cheap selvedge denim.

higher prices for jap denims is because of their source of cotton (zimbabwe being the best) plus the skill of the workers in the japanese mills contribute to more expensive but higher quality denims.
*
Got it. Thanks for the answer. So does this mean some denim designer can source cheap selvedge denim and sell it at a premium price around RM 400 to 600?

Yes! And I actually saw that at Zara jeans and bershka. Disappointed with Zara as they do have nice Jean.

QUOTE(James Bum @ Aug 16 2014, 09:34 PM)
GAP sources their selvedge from Bangladesh for their 1969 (?) range of selvedge jeans... however I think it maybe lower ounces due to the denim feels light and softer

Anyway don't need to go far if sourcing for reasonable quality selvedge that are mass produced on modern high speed high production shuttle loom. Our neighbors up north are making them and I have a feeling that's what they use for all the fake Momotaros or "Red line" selvedge Levis sold at chatuchak for 400 baht a piece

Fair Textile

Can see all the high speed rope dying, weaving, sanforizing, quality check and etc. here >>> http://fairtextile.com/index.php/technology

If those Levis with selvedge can be sold for about RM40 taking into account that the shop would earn at least RM5 from each pair that means the production cost for each pair would be less than RM35... minus out the labor for cutting, stitching and making the denim I won't be surprised that the denim cloth itself would cost around RM10 only
*
Totally agree with what you say. And sometimes feel like a ripoff when some jeans Designer selling them RM 400 for a piece. We won't know where the denim are from, I can alway say it's from Japan.

This is just an example of how an RM40 imitation selvedge can do what it's much more expensive RM1K brothers can... which is to stand (proudly) on its own lol.

user posted image

I'm sure many would loathe it and say "oh it's just some imitation crap, can't compare to my real selvedge that I bought for >RM1K". But really, if using this same cheap selvedge denim and improving it's workmanship, much better quality stitching etc, some savvy entrepreneur could claim that the denim is Made in Japan and sell it for a premium.

What I'm saying is that to take everything in life including selvedge denims with a pinch of salt
*
yes thats exactly correct.

im not sure about designer jeans. some swear those designer jeans (eg Dior and Burberry) makes decent selvedge and raw denims rather than jump on the bandwagon.

truth is, as a buyer, we know the trade off whether the quality meets the price.
honestly i dont mind where the selvedge and raw denim is sourced from. if the quality and workmanship is there at the appropriate price, i'd buy it.

many had doubts initially on hearing about redcloud, a denim brand based in China. but the quality is there, and some buyers can appreciate that.

i just dont support fake denims. if they come out with an original brand, i have no qualms about it.
*
yes.. i will rather buy a cheaper brand than buying a fake samurai.
just saying that if they can come out with a good quality selvedge, might as well built your own brand. I guess thats the hard part of building up your own brand and convince people to buy it. but i hardly see why would anyone that know all this premium brand will buy fake one. Not everyone ( at least among my friend ) that really know about Samurai, Flat head , momotaro, etc .. and i think for an average joe they wont even bother spending 1k for a pair of denim. Of course me myself couldnt afford it. But at least i wont be buying a fake one. I rather by a cheaper uniqlo.
or if other brand like local brand or other Thai brand with a reasonable price then i will prefer that.

it's the denim that makes the brand, not the brand that makes the denim. if that makes sense. tongue.gif

yes it make sense! hahah
is that why there is this brand call unbranded brand? since they claim they use Japanese selvedge denim, not sure from which mill.
