i am quite interested with Zowie mouse, but i bought a Razer DA in the beginning of the year due to their 50% discount. i looking at the zowie EC and FK series and have no idea which one is better for me coz there is no places for me to try it out. i kinda like DA i heard EC series is very close to DA and even better. thought?
If you like the DA shape, the EC will be more at home in your hands. They're not "very close" to one another though, they do feel more different than their looks would suggest. A brief breakdown as I own both the DA (chroma) and EC-2A.
Shape wise;
The DA has its iconic hump from the left to the right on the back of the mouse. The EC on the other hand also has a hump, but it is less pronounced and more linear. This is the major difference between the 2. Other more minor difference include the lip at the edge of the mice of DA being more sharp while the EC being more rolled off, this includes the side profiles as well.
Size wise;
The EC-1A more closely resembles the general size of the DA. The EC-2A however is noticeably smaller, so if you like the DA size then it'd be better to go for the bigger version of the EC-A series instead.
Buttons and scroll wheel;
It's the age old omron vs huanos. But what many don't actually realize is that huanos are actually very soft switches, however Zowie always make harder shells than its competitors. The light clicks you get from the DA will be an entirely opposite of what you'd get from a EC-A mouse. While over the years Zowie has made their shells softer (starting with the EC-A and ZA series before the BenQ merge), they are still very distinctive in feel.
It's just too bad that Zowie hasn't fixed their scroll wheels though. It's their biggest blight and yes, the reports are real; more often than not a Zowie mice will have a dead scroll wheel long before anything else breaks. I have a ZA13 and ZA12, the ZA13 had a dead wheel within 3 months of moderate usage. The ZA12 is showing signs of a breaking scroll wheel after 6 months of moderate usage. The EC2-A that I'm still using is showing signs of a wobbly scroll wheel after a year of usage.
At the end of the day, I still prefer the DA over the EC-2A. Perhaps it's because I've used the DA for 7 years and the shape, size, weight and feel has been infused with my hand. But I do enjoy using EC-2A at any given time, it's one of the best mice I've ever laid my hands on too.
