QUOTE(ray123 @ Apr 2 2014, 05:25 PM) 1 - overrated, always crowded 2 - overrated, always crowded 3 - never tried as I'm old 4 - management dispute, products not as good as before. original chef started own business http://humblebeginnings.com.my/5 - good if you can stand the environment, not advisable to eat too much 6 - nothing special for me 7 - yes, this is good 8 - never tried as I'm old 9 - always crowded, and it's a hell to go on weekends because it's at Jonker Walk. Just an open-air pub. 10 - nothing special for me, as it's just a durian-flavored puff 11 - always crowded, the wait time for the laksa can be atrocious and not worth it, the desert is not unique how old are you, uncle?

As a Malaccan now staying somewhere else, I always have a list of food to eat when I go back home town. It's like a few places to eat, not necessarily the best but more of nostalgia, convenience and good food.
Satay celup I normally frequent "McQuek's Satay Celup" since it's never crowded and the place is clean and not stuffy. Gravy may not be as good as the best but still very tasty and I normally order fresh gravy anyway instead of re-using the old on which is tastier...if you get what I mean. Kids can run around the large compound so that's a plus for big family gathering.
Satay babi with the famous gravy in Kota Laksamana is my other favourite, aka Sun May Hiong Satay. Expensive but damn tasty, goes well with beer.
Assam Pedas Claypot in Kota Laksamana aka "Ana Asam pedas" was previously not famous but ever since they switched to claypot, stuff got really good. Place is always crowded at night, open air malay stall. Nice lepak place after drinks at pub. Serve all kinds of other food as well, their roti tampal was divine last time.
Assam Pedas Hajjah Mona also in Kota Laksamana opposite the new hotel. Was previously the most famous Asam Pedas in MLK, aka "Assam Spande" because of its sourness lol. Used to serve the lorry men and kuli's of the old wholesale market, famous from then and now still popular and crowded.
Curry Keluak in one of those Nyonya restaurants. Nowadays hard to find a nice one. Portuguese Settlement might find one but now not sure. Damn I love keluak. Niche food not for everyone, you either like it or hate it for its bitterness.
Hee Kiau (kuay teow sup) in Tengkera opposite the Badminton Hall (open only weekends) AKA "ajinomoto hee kiow". For your weekly aji fix. The keropok added into the soup makes all the difference.
Yong Tau Foo stall for break fast at Siang Malam coffeeshop near Sri Ambaji Temple at Bukit China. This is in Siang Malam kopitiam, not the one opposite the temple as that one sucks. Fresh fishball, best tasty taukee, great tasty chilli paste hnnnnggggg. I absolutely love their tau kee and brinjal.
Beef Noodles near Bukit China roundabout. This one is Halal chinese shop and the broth is beefy but clear as it can get. If you love spare parts, or just plain tasty and "heaty" soup on a cold day. This one is good.
Mee rebus (with kuah rojak) at Ming Huat Kopitiam in Ujong Pasir. Opposite the entrance of Portuguese settlement, mee rebus kuah is just nice texture, not thick or slimy. Ask to add a bit of their rojak gravy for a little sweetness for best effect. Used to gobble this 3x a week when was young. Expect to wait long though on weekends, lots of tourist are catching on... so most of the time by lunch time sudah habis.
There are others of course but not really in a list.
Ikan Bakar at Umbai is always nice, just stick to their baked fish (ikan bakar), their other cooking style like tiga rasa, kicap etc just very normal. Always ordered fish and happy with it, order anything else or cooked any other way, I am normally not impressed.
Coconut milkshake kind of normal la, to me nothing special even as Malaccan. Give me fresh coconut anytime.
Nyonya food nowadays very touristy. It's nice but portion small and expensive.
Nadeje cake shop overrated. I think more hype than actual taste. Sure it taste good, so is Secret Recipe cake.
Longkang siham in Bunga Raya long time never eat. This place is a classic and sooner or later will be gone. Definitely a place where really how people used to eat their supper. More for couples and friends, not for family.
