Although relatively cheap, 50mm F1.4 (regardless of common brands) are not very good lens haha, try and find the reviews They tend to be very soft wide open.

Other F1.4 lenses of different focal lengths, on the other hand, are generally expensive like cr@p haha 

As for bokeh and sharpness, all those can be done with the right skills (technical and editing), just needs practice

well, the new Sigma 50mm 1.4 Art is already vy sharp. cost almost 3k, bt still relatively much cheaper than canon's 50mm 1.2L and Nikon 58mm 1.4G and good thing is much sharper. I guess the sharpness would be something like the 35mm Art as well.
review, there're many. i usually get reviews from multiple sites. Some are lab and controlled review, some are real life tests.
those sites i go to are www.dxomark.com , photographylife.com and kenrockwell.com . Sometimes i go to any random sites la. dxomark u can compare camera and lenses. great site to get some info.

er, 35mm 1.8, the best is 35mm 1.8G la.
50mm i'd advice u to get the sigma 50mm 1.4 EX, bt if budget around 700, then get the 50mm 1.8G. 3rd party lens is not always bad, and Nikon n Canon lens, is not always good too. haha.

landscape n casual using a 35? hmm, abit problem.. haha. landscape u can use ur kit lens only la.
or.........or u could buy my tamron 17-50 vc. haha. still not sold yet. 

yeap, and also anything. landscape can be done, bt sometimes u need wider lens, at least 35mm on full frame, which is around 23mm on crop body lo.

I took my kit and 35mm for my Japan trip recently.. just have to play with it.. and yes, when landscape shot, you feel like missing a certain angel of that 35mm...

Oh ya, night shot is decent too with that wide aperture, and the foodie shot is pretty good too, just don't use 1.8.. I learn through out my vacation, foodie shot best at 2.2 to 2.8, 35mm close up pretty good too..

If lazy, just get sigma 18-50mm or the tamron one... both also good to replace the kit while single lens only to fit vacation style function ; f2.8 with zoom..
FYI Sigma one 18-50mm f2.8 = Rm2k, Tamron non-VR f2.8 Rm1.2k ish, nikkor 35mm f1.8, Rm700

 

i think for me 35 can be used for almost anything except landscape ( u need wide angle), sports(u need tele lens), macro(macro lens n stuffs ) and indoors when u need to take group photos. other than that they are 90% on my body last time. haha.

btw if u wanna buy sigma one, i think u get import set enough. try before buy. sigma warranty expensive for that lens, nt worth it. import my fren bought for 1.6k including filter i think.

did i say i din use 35mm alot? maybe said wrongly d.. haha. i use my 35mm alot when using d5100. it's a must have lens for me. haha. the firework shot i took was using focal length 35mm, bt that time was using tamron 1750 vc. yeah low light 35mm 1.8g would help alot, and less chances for handshake compared to 50mm.

nope, sold d5100, got a d610. tamron 17-50 cant be used in full frame. so im selling it.
i have 35mm 1.8g, sigma 50mm 1.4 EX, and d610 kit lens.
my d5100 kit lens last time i sold it after 3 months buying the d5100 then bought tamron. mainly because tamron is a all rounder event lens. shot everything using that. then only i found out i want to venture more into portrait n cosplay, so got myself a 35mm lo. bt that time i still using tamron as well. bt 35mm 90% of the time i guess. only change to tamron when need the wider angle.

if you tight budget, get the 35mm first... this would be your first prime lens, so you can do those 'bokeh' shot..

imo, kit lens serve quite well on F8-F12 on landscape shot...

just 2 cent... 

yeah...the 35mm f1.8 also my first lens i buy after the kit lens when i using D5100 some year ago..
get poison by the "bokeh" n straight away bought it...

I think that's because you're shooting indoor, so the shutter is too slow resulting blurry image because there was not sufficient light. I would make sure the shutter at least 1/250 for a cat shot since they're so active. So, I would prefer to shoot outdoor along with my cat.
