Although relatively cheap, 50mm F1.4 (regardless of common brands) are not very good lens haha, try and find the reviews icon_rolleyes.gif They tend to be very soft wide open.

Other F1.4 lenses of different focal lengths, on the other hand, are generally expensive like cr@p haha  laugh.gif

As for bokeh and sharpness, all those can be done with the right skills (technical and editing), just needs practice  icon_rolleyes.gif

I'm no sifu lo. Sifu havent spoken yet. haha.
u've spent alot for photographing insects, now spend more for photographing humans!
well, the new Sigma 50mm 1.4 Art is already vy sharp. cost almost 3k, bt still relatively much cheaper than canon's 50mm 1.2L and Nikon 58mm 1.4G and good thing is much sharper. I guess the sharpness would be something like the 35mm Art as well.
review, there're many. i usually get reviews from multiple sites. Some are lab and controlled review, some are real life tests.
those sites i go to are www.dxomark.com , photographylife.com and kenrockwell.com . Sometimes i go to any random sites la. dxomark u can compare camera and lenses. great site to get some info.

here's the review of Sigma 50mm 1.4 EX http://photographylife.com/reviews/sigma-50mm-f1-4

im using one now.

LOL

ART cannot la. Its like buying aventador only. haha

How is it so far? Briefly review ur lens biggrin.gif

Do you prefer Nikkor lens or 3rd party? There is a huge gap of price.  brows.gif
Stop poisoning me la. I am just use 50mm f/1.8D can already.  whistling.gif
Don't poison people jor. Later people will spend too much on photography.  whistling.gif

Got huge gap difference meh? I wan the lens that is best bang for buck.
3rd party like tamron/sigma?

P.s: I dont know what is the meaning of F stopped down. Mind explaining like explain to 10 years old kid?

35mm 1.4 Art still ok la. a used one just over 2k right? haha.
er, 35mm 1.8, the best is 35mm 1.8G la.
50mm i'd advice u to get the sigma 50mm 1.4 EX, bt if budget around 700, then get the 50mm 1.8G. 3rd party lens is not always bad, and Nikon n Canon lens, is not always good too. haha.
*
2k cry.gif

50mm for dx camera is equal to 75mm. I feel like quite hard la....
whereas 35mm is like 50mm in dx camera which i feel quite ok.
So means its either sigma 50 mm 1.4ex or 50mm 1.8g. if 35mm , nikon 1.8g. hmm.. coz 35mm i see price for sigma so expensive. haha

Is 35mm enough for casual use? Usually i took landscape pic and vacation pict. Seldom take portraits.

yeap, and also anything. landscape can be done, bt sometimes u need wider lens, at least 35mm on full frame, which is around 23mm on crop body lo.
*
I checked through my folder of pictures, usually if Landscape shots , I tend to use around 25-30mm focal length. For portraits , I use 35-55mm.

Its because I got the ability to change my focal length without changing where I'm standing. So that is why instead of walking I change the focal length until I feel right. If changing focal length still doesnt get the right picture, I start to walk tongue.gif

I took my kit and 35mm for my Japan trip recently.. just have to play with it.. and yes, when landscape shot, you feel like missing a certain angel of that 35mm...  tongue.gif  tongue.gif
using nikkor 35mm f1.8..

Oh ya, night shot is decent too with that wide aperture, and the foodie shot is pretty good too, just don't use 1.8.. I learn through out my vacation, foodie shot best at 2.2 to 2.8, 35mm close up pretty good too..

If lazy, just get sigma 18-50mm or the tamron one... both also good to replace the kit while single lens only to fit vacation style function ; f2.8 with zoom..
FYI Sigma one 18-50mm f2.8 = Rm2k, Tamron non-VR f2.8 Rm1.2k ish, nikkor 35mm f1.8, Rm700

nod.gif  nod.gif

what is foodie shot? ahha..

so your 35mm is used for like portrait and also taking picture of ur vacations? something like street photography?

i think for me 35 can be used for almost anything except landscape ( u need wide angle), sports(u need tele lens), macro(macro lens n stuffs ) and indoors when u need to take group photos. other than that they are 90% on my body last time. haha.

btw if u wanna buy sigma one, i think u get import set enough. try before buy. sigma warranty expensive for that lens, nt worth it. import my fren bought for 1.6k including filter i think.
*
hmm.gif
Then what you usually do in photography??

I'm not bias to sigma. just see which lens is performing better. either nikon/sigma/tamron haha

I'm not doing sports / macro. Indoor maybe once a while but group photo is kinda seldom.

Mostly I use my DSLR when I feel it is a nice time to get some shots. biggrin.gif

hmm, wat i normally do in photogrphy?
checkout my fb page https://www.facebook.com/calvinkohphotography
i guess i'd say i take portrait photos n cosplay? i dno, i take photos of most things if im in the mood. haha.
*
haha.. I'm the 1005th person who like ur page already ahah

Anyhow maybe 35mm lens is quite flexible. Maybe we can take landscape shot too with it. Just not as nice as wide angle lens. They are good with lowlight situations (for f1.4/1.8).

Maybe indoor can but big group photo is not possible. small group like 3-5 ppl can la. haha

One day I might visit stores to see how the lens is. and maybe I will decide then.

So , why u less using ur 35mm lens? hmm.gif

did i say i din use 35mm alot? maybe said wrongly d.. haha. i use my 35mm alot when using d5100. it's a must have lens for me. haha. the firework shot i took was using focal length 35mm, bt that time was using tamron 1750 vc. yeah low light 35mm 1.8g would help alot, and less chances for handshake compared to 50mm.
haha paiseh.. likes come from friends n more from cosplayers. cosplayers networking is good, my page likes rocketed vy fast.  laugh.gif
*
haha maybe i read it wrongly also. haha..
currently u still using d5100? whats your lenses? tamron 17-50 vc and 35mm 1.8g? why not kit lens and instead use tamron? hehe

sorry la ask u alot of question notworthy.gif

nope, sold d5100, got a d610. tamron 17-50 cant be used in full frame. so im selling it.
i have 35mm 1.8g, sigma 50mm 1.4 EX, and d610 kit lens.
my d5100 kit lens last time i sold it after 3 months buying the d5100 then bought tamron. mainly because tamron is a all rounder event lens. shot everything using that. then only i found out i want to venture more into portrait n cosplay, so got myself a 35mm lo. bt that time i still using tamron as well. bt 35mm 90% of the time i guess. only change to tamron when need the wider angle.
*
hurm2.. thanks alot bro. Maybe I will follow ur steps. haha..

But instead my kitlens will be made as my lens if i need wider angle.

Still need time to bulk up my pocket before getting the new lens.

I just bought lens filters. so i guess i will be playing awhile with them first and then only i invest on new lens. haha icon_idea.gif

if you tight budget, get the 35mm first... this would be your first prime lens, so you can do those 'bokeh' shot..

imo, kit lens serve quite well on F8-F12 on landscape shot...

just 2 cent...  tongue.gif

thanks for the recommendations.

since I in my new house now, no internet yet. Wait this Friday then they pasang unifi. Haha. Then I will come back again with few new shots maybe...

I think that's because you're shooting indoor, so the shutter is too slow resulting blurry image because there was not sufficient light. I would make sure the shutter at least 1/250 for a cat shot since they're so active. So, I would prefer to shoot outdoor along with my cat. nod.gif
