nothing wrong with Steam, it's Ubisoft. They decided to set the price same as before the local currency conversion.

the retail copy is cheaper, but it will be Uplay only. some people would prefer Steam + Uplay because Steam.

only reason to get it on Steam: +1 library

because some people prefer all their games to be on Steam, including Uplay games.

they are supposed to work that way

still, you need Steam to play those games you have activated on Uplay. unless you use Uplay key NOT from Steam to activate the game.

is the Steam client is on when you click Play from Uplay client?

if the uplay key is generated from Steam, the game will always require Steam to run along with Uplay. And it's better if you turn on Uplay first before launching the game on Steam.
