1.) Preferred brand: ASUS/GIGABYTE/DELL
2.) Laptop characteristic: Preferably 14"/15"/17" of screen size. 4GB and above for RAM.
3.) Budget range: RM2000 to RM3000
4.) Usage: Will be taking ICT/Software Engineering course in my future university, which is happening next month.

I know a lot of you professionals here have better suggestions for me instead of what I stated above. If you think you have a better suggestion for me and I should totally just bail what I stated above, just feel free to tell me. Thanks for helping.

hi there. for your course, your options will be :

Lenovo
Z510, i7-4702MQ + Nvidia GT740M@RM2799[2.2kg], 4GB, 1TB, backlit, W8; 2 yrs

MSI
GP60-2OD-034MY, i7-4700MQ + Nvidia GT740M + (1920x1080; anti-glare)@RM2999, 4GB, 750GB, W8, steel series KB

you will benefit the Core i7 for your course, albeit it has graphics card which is supplemental if you play games. my best vote here goes to the MSI, as it has a full HD screen which will too, benefit the course you are studying. prices are in RRP and negotiable.

I will also need SSD. Is it included with these 2 models? Both are solid suggestions. Also about the RAM and storage. Are they upgradeable or soldered?

sorry to say, not included. and yes, the storage and RAM is user replaceable.

How about this? Can I add the SSD on my own after I buy it? Or do you have any other suggestions that come with SSD?

sorry, forgot to mention, Z510 is kinda hard to access, and MSI has a bothersome warranty sticker.
and yes, you can DIY after you bought the laptop.

for suggestions that comes with SSD, nothing particular within that budget range.

So, I can actually add a SSD, change the RAM modules and expanding storage in that 2 laptop you stated?

yes but bare in mind that Z510 needs some practice to get to the internal system, while MSI has a bothersome warranty sticker which requires some skills to remove the back plate without tempering the sticker.

videos of disassembly can be found on youtube.

Well, can I just request for those staffs at the retailer to do it for me?

i dont think they will do for Lenovo Z510. for MSI, depends on how skillful the retailer is.

How about options that have SSD included, just suggest a few for me. I'll see if I can add some more budget.

if you insist :

Acer
V7-582PG-74501225k, i7-4500U + Nvidia GT750M + 256GB SSD + (1920x1080 IPS; touch)@RM3999[2.2kg], 12GB, W8.1
*
OH WOW! The price is surprisingly higher. I thought it would only be like RM200 to RM300 different.

Edit: Because a normal SSD cost only around that amount of price.

thats why i dont suggest you to buy laptops with pre-installed SSD.
well, the MSI is actually a good choice. just need to be careful with the warranty sticker upon removal.

Okay, thank you for the solid suggestions. So, no more other options for me to look at?

1.) Preferred Brand: DELL(Reason: Trusted Warranty Services)/ASUS(Reason: Well Known)/Lenovo(Reason: Putting Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro in consideration)
2.) Budget: RM3500 Tops or maybe more, but not too much
3.) Usage: Light Word/Excel/PowerPoint/Access production & light programming in the future
4.) Size: 13" or higher

I have already owned a MBA(it's free though), but it is not suitable for my programming usage(although I'm not doing any of it now, but in the future). Plus, it has been a pain in the ass whenever I have done working on Windows with MS Office stuff, it will all run out of alignment when I am switching over everything to MBA to edit. You guys can also just ignore the preferable specs I stated above if you have something better and similar to suggest, of course the cheaper the better. One more thing about Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro, I'm thinking of which to choose between Intel i7 or i5 model. According to what others told me in of the the very early replies in this thread, I should go with i7. I don't really need HDD, but it would also be better if it is included with SSD. SSD capacity like 128GB is already enough for me, I will just get an external drive if I really need storage. PEACE!

Edit: I went to Lowyat yesterday, most of the retailers there recommend Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro which is also why I am considering it.
