I got a post from one of my friends on bb.com who's doing a Westside powerlifting orientated program. This is what he said :-

Heavy deads twice a week is too much. Heavy squats twice a week is too much. Heavy squats and deads in one week is too much. I'd make one of those leg days a lighter day where you focus on speed work first and then hypertrophy with smaller exercises. Maybe do speed deads and then heavy squats one week, and then switch next week. Otherwise, you're looking at a lot of strain on the nervous system.

You guys gotta be careful of CNS fatigue. Trust me, you don't want that. Squats and especially deadlifts are extremely taxing on the central nervous system. It is ADVISABLE to take a week off from heavy deadlifts every 3 weeks.

I'd suggest that if you guys still wanna do deadlifts and squats in the same week, alternate between light and heavy for each.

I'm currently trying out one week heavy DL and one heavy week squats. A few weeks ago, i've been milking up the gains on my deadlift cycle, i made tremendous progress but i kinda fukked my CNS. Lol. I'm taking a week of deadlifting. Hopefully i'll be more fired up next week.

..and i was planning to do zercher squats on monday, wednesday and friday for 3 weeks while waiting for my wrist to heal.

was only able to do 1 plate on each side for the zercher, the crook of my arm isn't liking it very much.

hmmm intresting...

And I used to do squats AND deadlifts twice within the same week in an effort to strengthen my thighs and increase tolerance to stress. At very low poundages tho.

Better squat n deadlift at alternative weeks.

tell me about it....i just had my car wrecked becaue of fatigue .., I was doing squats and dead lift at the same session on one Friday night. Slept for 10 hours, and wake up the next morning, went for cardio for 30 minutes, didnt eat breakfast properly. Went to the office on Saturday, while driving on the way back home, the legs refused to communicate with the brain. I hit the back of a lorry, lucky nothing happen to me or the wifey. My legs was just too tired to find the brake pedal, instead of hitting the brakes i hit the clutch..I never for once in my 14 years of driving experience, confuse the cluth with the brake. Needless to say, the front of my truck was damaged, and insurance quoted rm4k of repairs on my side. I didnt notice the fatigue I was experincing until the accident happend. It was like day dreaming and has a bit ganja-induced high to it. Lesson learned th hard way.

Workout smart but not to hard. It's also about recovery, eat properly. You know what they say, workout is 40% in the gym and 60% recovering.

Sorry to hear that. Correction on a few points though. Overtraining is overrated. We're talking about CNS fatigue here. I sometimes do more than 7-8 sets of heavy deadlifts for a total of 25-40 reps over 350 pounds and i'm still fine the next day.
Pay attention to your pre and post workout nutrition (you were probably lacking in sufficient high GI carbs).

If you can't get your nutrition in order, imo, you have no business training intensely because you can put your loved ones at risk due to under-recovery. This episode was a fine example.
And no offense, but it was kind of stupid right? Waking up, doing cardio and not eating a proper breakfast?
Bodybuilding --------------> 70% diet, 30% the rest (including training, recovery methods, etc, etc)

Hope everything's fine now.

*On a side note, doing deadlifts and squats in one session won't kill your CNS. Doing them in one session repeatedly for several weeks, even though it's once a week WILL rape your CNS.

i'll say you're very lucky you didn't get physically harmed. all you need is a weakened limb and you're training career is down the drain.

I'm guessing it was CNS fatigue, because i was kinda slow and all my response time like talking and motor skill were whacky. That's why I think it was CNS fatigue. Its not the normal tiredness...its hmm like I said..drug induced high..funky feeling.

Maybe its overtraning like u said. I dont know, but definately dont want to experience it again.

Prior to the accident, I was doing Squat and DL on the same session every other day.

How did your CNS fatigue felt like ?

fleshwound...thankgod, very lucky becasue the airbag didnot go off. The wifey and I were not wearing seatbelts, and in the split seconds of the accident I can see, from the impact, she had her head n the dashboard where the airbag was. My chest hit the steering wheel also, but lucky us, the air bag did not go off.

Well, CNS fatigue feels like you're dragging ass to the gym. Lol. I know MadCow and Ripptoe's training program advocate deadlifting and squatting on a more frequent basis but that philosophy is inherently flawed cos people's CNS are different.
I know i need to deadlift and squat heavy every 2 weeks alternated. Anymore than that and i feel like shit. Even if i do both in the same day, i alternate between light and heavy each lift.

In that case, since this week i've squatted (ARGH!! They hurt!) then I think next week i'll just deadlift.
