Both same driving style (up to capability of engine) =D

Says a LOT about the fuel economy of large modern turbo engines coupled with DCTs.

By right your Passat should be doing slightly better than 10.5L/100km due to bigger engine and higher gear ratio = Lower Rpm / More relaxed engine .
After all it was designed for the autobahn.

Just for comparison my Exora when doing 130 constantly it does around 9.xL/100km , close to 10L.

As for your saga, well the older Campro engine wasnt designed to be fuel efficient even with the IAFM add on which only mask the torque problem.
Newer VVT protons are much more fuel efficient.

it's not as simple as modern turbo + dct... it's all about matching engine power/torque with good gear ratios for the weight+load of the car

I drove a 3.5L NA, normal 6 speed auto, 2000kg 8 seater once, and it does better than your 9.5km/l...

Haha, my left foot is quite heavy, so fuel efficiency is not my priority =D

I'm more surprised of the same fuel economy between a large car vs a small one =D

Just curious whats your average on B8 if your average is somewhere around 90-110kmh?

at 170kmh, I think it did pretty well!

Oh, sorry, misunderstood your question just now.

I've never really been forced (by trafffic confitions) to drive avg 90-110 yet (i travel KL -Terengganu often, time is late night and early morning),
but if full highway should be lower 8 to 7 L/100km.

The new passat B8.5 with slightly detuned engine and 7DCT should take it a bit further if full highway =D

But as i mentioned, normally if anyone decided for a car of this caliber,
fuel economy is just the icing on the cake (^-^)"

Both drive 170kmh, but one accelerate madly from 110kmh to 170kmh, while another accelerate gently from 110kmh to 170kmh. Both will get very different fc reading.

This much is true. No argument about this.

But you should re-phrase:
"Both drive 170kmh, but one accelerate madly MULTIPLE TIMES from 110kmh to 170kmh, while another accelerate gently MULTIPLE TIMES from 110kmh to 170kmh.
Both will get very different fc reading"

Multiple times shall be defined as more than 10 times =D

Seriously, if only accelerate 1 or 2 times, then travel on constant speed for 100km, really barely any diff to fuel econ haha =D
It's the aggregate of MULTIPLE hard/fast accelerations that affect FC.

if you comparing at at 70-110, or 60-90, the effect of acceleration may also not be apparent enough to offset other factors;

But no doubt acceleration (hence right foot) is CONFIRMED the dominant, if not the only cause of bad fuel economy in modern cars.
(engine tuning and lack of power not withstanding haha =D)

Bro, can travel up to 170km/h, of course KL-karak-kuantan-KT, the Lebuh raya pantai timur obviously haha
