QUOTE(newbzie @ Dec 12 2014, 10:14 PM) added![]() Brookfield to build Monash Uni’s $145m student apartment project MONASH University has appointed Brookfield Multiplex to build a $145 million student accommodation precinct on its Clayton campus in Melbourne’s southeast. The 40,000sq m project will see 1000 new apartments built over four buildings. There will also be retail and learning areas. Bookfield Multiplex regional managing director Graham Cottam said student accommodation projects suited the group. “Student accommodation is a great sector for us as it combines our skills in delivering quality residential developments with our experience in working in busy, live education environments,” Mr Cottam said. The designers of the buildings are Jackson Clements Burrows Architects, Hayball, Richard Middleton Architects and McBride Charles Ryan. While each building will have an individual architectural style, all will include common areas such as games rooms and lounge areas. Landscaped areas will also be developed between the four buildings. Completion of the project is scheduled for December 2015. http://www.theaustralian.com.au/business/p...d4e49765ef658e7 |

Monash alumni network - Monash University Alumni Singapore (MUAS) - has been awarded Australian Alumni Singapore’s 2014 Outstanding University Alumni Association Award. MUAS beat out networks from University of Adelaide, University of Melbourne, University of Newcastle, University of Queensland and University of South Australia to win the award. Founded in 1996, MUAS is one of Monash University’s most established alumni networks supporting more than 10,000 Singapore-based graduates. The MUAS committee offers a range of services to its members including networking events, professional development opportunities, outdoor activities, and community outreach activities. The group also collaborates with other alumni associations to organise joint activities. Outgoing MUAS President Kartika Angkawijaya said it was an honour to receive the award. “This award is recognition of all the hard work and dedication the committee has put in to ensure our program of events and activities is well organised as well as of benefit to the alumni community,” Ms Angkawijaya said. Monash University Alumni Relations Manager Viv Norman congratulated MUAS on their achievement. “It is a well-deserved honour,” she said. “It is a delight to work with such committed and talented volunteers. "Thank you to all MUAS members for your tireless efforts in representing the interests of Monash University alumni in Singapore.” MUAS has recently elected its new committee for 2015 with Chris Williams and Dr Charles Ong installed as president and vice-president respectively. Monash University has received advice that a valued member of our student community, Kevin Alexander Soetjipto has passed away following the Air Asia plane tragedy.
On this day, that would have been Kevin's 21st birthday, we express our deepest condolences to his family and friends. ![]() |

Magic mice put Monash in elite pharmaceutical club
![]() MONASH has joined Columbia and the University of Texas’s Southwestern Medical Centre as the only institutions licensed to use a mouse that produces human antibodies. The deal with pharmaceutical giant Regeneron will help fast-track the development of its medical discoveries. The arrangement was brokered by Mark Sleeman, a Monash graduate who returned to join its Obesity and Diabetes Institute following 13 years with Regeneron in the US. Sleeman says Regeneron’s “VelocImmune” mouse is one of many rodent lineages engineered to exude human proteins. The approach can shear years from drug development, replacing some human trials with animal tests. But the cost of modifying the mice is beyond most universities. Instead, pharmaceutical companies bankroll the magic mice and guard their use in tight partnerships with other biotech firms. Regeneron took a different tack, Sleemans says. “They appreciated that placing them in the hands of academics is beneficial for developing therapeutics, because academics can do very innovative science.” He says Monash doesn’t get “carte blanche” on the mice, with contracts negotiated on a project- by-project basis. But the arrangement gives Regeneron access to creative researchers who are “not bogged down” by pharmaceutical industry processes and governance, while the academics gain partners with deep pockets and experience in drug development. The deal is still in its early days. The first agreement was signed in 2013 and the projects — which include research into diabetes, abnormal cholesterol and other metabolic disorders — are only a year or so old. But the researchers can use the mice to confirm that antibodies developed in the lab work on people. “It’s directly applicable to the human disease. And the pharma companies have a lot more faith in the evidence put in front of them by the academic.” http://www.theaustralian.com.au/higher-edu...d4e49765ef658e7 |

Monash University Unveils Ground-Breaking Microscope
![]() Monash University recently opened its new Clive and Vera Ramaciotti Centre for Structural Cry-Electron Microscopy with the centrepiece being a powerful microscope that researchers hope will assist them in the development of better treatments for diseases such as cancer. The $5 million Titan Krios microscope is three metres tall and weighs about a tonne and has the capacity to look at the position of individual atoms with molecular structures. The microscope works by shooting electrons through a sample and the beams that are deflected off the molecule can be used to create a two-dimensional image. This continued action, in turn, offers the chance for scientists to generate 3-D images of molecules, their loops and their sidechains. ![]() Professor James Whisstock, the Australian Research Centre’s director of advanced molecular imaging said the microscope would aid their team in the discovery of better treatments of diseases such as cancer, diabetes and multiple sclerosis. “I think this will be applicable to most of the conditions that affect people as they age. How, for example, viruses get into cells and how cells go out of control in conditions such as cancer,” he said He also went on to suggest that this advanced form of imaging had the potential to transform scientists’ understanding of the immune system. “Electron microscopy has been used for many years to peer at biological life but the pictures we have been getting have been very low resolution,” he said. Formerly, Australian scientists had to travel overseas to use similar Titan microscopes which could compromise samples. |
