in my opinion:
1. see your budget (better invest in lens than body, buy body only + prime lenses or fast zoom lens, you will rarely use kit lens after get that lenses IMHO

)
2. see your simplicity preferences (sony, canon, nikon have pocket camera with image quality same with their dslr and also interchangeable lenses)
3. photography is not about tools, it is about creativity. But good tools help realize your creativity

i've seen pictures taken with G15 look so much nicer than a person who uses a dslr.
like what been said above, if you have the budget, of course you will go for expansive body + expensive lens.
in your case, you should go for cheap body + expensive lens. the reason is you can upgrade the body anytime you want, and for the lens, you will keep them for very long time!
