both are entry level.... both are almost same in terms of image quality.... ISO same... all same... design different...

nikon image sharper, colour flat... not nice...
canon image softer, colour nice...

in terms of image quality, D3100 noise control is better than canon, which detail is captured more than canon even in high ISO sensitivity.
about colour reproduction, that is depends on user's preference. let's talk auto white balance setting. D3100 colour reproduction is warmer meanwhile 1100D colour reproduction is cooler.
both camera selling price is around RM1500, maybe may cheaper, depends on how dealer set the package

why 1100D not good? They work fine, if that's your budget then you can't go wrong with either of the cameras listed.

All those noise-control stuff, they're not much difference to begin with.

You can see your friends use canon / nikon then if you buy the same one can borrow their lens to try or exchange gear and knowledge tongue.gif

I know you're asking opinion about D3100 or 1100D, can I suggest that you read a bit more on the both, and perhaps wait a bit more? I was in a similar situation as you, I was very very eager to buy the D3100 (almost got a loan from someone else to buy the camera) but I'm very happy I waited. If your budget allow, go for pro-sumer level such as nikon D7100 or Canon 70d. Jumping from the iphone to dslr, I sincerely believe that, the touch screen function of 70d, would be very welcoming for you.

just my 1 cent. smile.gif

it really depends on the user.

100D has its merits. I have the 60D. I've used the 70D. I also have used 350D / 500D / 550D and such.

I love the 100D / 1100D range for the size. the 60D / 70D is the better one if one can afford but it's much bigger in size and weight.

I would recommend you getting the middle-entry level one. Something like D5XXX for nikon or 700D for canon kind of level. As for which is better, the current trend goes, the technological improvements seem to be better for canon side. And if you want to do video, definitely canon then. But I think more importantly, you should choose the one that feels better in your hands. That is pretty much a matter of taste. I'm a nikon user by the way, and I have a D7100. At the end of the day, it's more a matter of buying into the system, not the camera body, cause it's the lens that really make the difference.

In there, there are no photos taken from PRO SLR. tongue.gif 1 from phone. 3 from compact, a lot from entry / semi-pro.

you see, in Canon's line up the even since the 550D, the 18MP sensor till now on the 70D works very similarly in practically all aspects.

oh and there are Pentax photos in the gallery too, Pentax K30.

If you really are keen on learning photography, then you should consider investing just a little more so that you may have more room to grow without soon needing another gear upgrade. Cause if you just want a camera that can take nice pictures with ease, then DSLR isn't really for you. The mirrorless cameras that are being produced nowadays can really take awesome photos too. People usually stick with their camera bodies for quite a long while, whereas they keep purchasing better lenses. Just my two cents' worth.

If you have a limited budget..but wanna a dslr...buy the one's that is within your budget. It doen's matter Nikon, canon ,fuji film etc..you cant go wrong coz you have zero knowledge. So from zero you learn to build up..once you have the confidence..then you jump to mid end or high end.

I ever heard/read about this interesting quotation:

"expensive body + cheap lens = shame,
cheap body + expensive lens = sexy"
hahaha...

in my opinion:
1. see your budget (better invest in lens than body, buy body only + prime lenses or fast zoom lens, you will rarely use kit lens after get that lenses IMHO tongue.gif )
2. see your simplicity preferences (sony, canon, nikon have pocket camera with image quality same with their dslr and also interchangeable lenses)
3. photography is not about tools, it is about creativity. But good tools help realize your creativity

just my 2cents

i've seen pictures taken with G15 look so much nicer than a person who uses a dslr.

like what been said above, if you have the budget, of course you will go for expansive body + expensive lens.

in your case, you should go for cheap body + expensive lens. the reason is you can upgrade the body anytime you want, and for the lens, you will keep them for very long time!

Don buy entry level lah.....

But think first, DSLR size does matter. Would u willing to take out every time?

Then u should consider M43.

For me, i from dslr to m43, now compact camera.... lol.
