Is there anyway to reduce/adjust the font size of embedded subtitles in mkv files? The subtitle font size in the system setting only works for external subtitle files.

All the embedded subtitles are too large for my liking.

I use indoor rabbit ear with booster. Analog is grainy a bit (especially VHF channels like RTM, which now also have ghosting since all those tall buildings in Klang town popped up), but digital is crystal clear. Unfortunately, knowing assteruk, I suspect they will also force RTM to suspend digital transmission during World Cup...

At the top of my roof I have direct line of sight to the KL Tower. Or do I still?

Well, you can try. But afaik RTM's analog transmitters are located at Sungai Besi, not KL Tower. KL Tower is where the Digital transmitters are.
*
The KL Tower website lists TV1 as VHF channel 5 and TV2 as VHF channel 8/10, and these cannot be digital transmission, I reckon. But you may be right, the website might not be up-to-date.

Hi guys.

Planning to make a XBMC + NAS (one or separate solution) for my new home. Most probably will go for RPi for XBMC and my old PC for NAS.

Any idea on how's the performance of RPi XBMC streaming 1080p from a NAS?
*
RPi makes a very good NAS and downloader, very low power and can run 24/7. Make it two Pis?

That is what I am planning to do. But can we implement some sort of a raid setup using RPi? I doubt it as you can only attached a USB storage device on the one and only USB port provided on the RPi. Unless there's a way of doing a raid on RPi, a NAS server made out of a PC is required. Correct me if I'm wrong.
*
I have only setup a simple samba NAS with one 3TB harddisk, not RAID. From what I read, RPi is not really suited for RAID. Whatever you do, always bear in mind the limitation of the RPi: the USB and LAN ports share the same controller.

Yeah. I checked a few online discussion regarding RPi NAS. The best thing about RPi NAS is that it consumes very little amount of power. Some even say USD 5 per year. But the worse thing about RPi NAS is the capability of making a NAS Raid, due to the reason you gave above.

Most probably I'll go for 2 RPi with one as a Single HD NAS RPi for the time being. Then when I have enough budget, I'll go for a Green NAS setup. Gotta keep the electricity bill low. Haha
*
Ya, go for it, sit back and enjoy.
I had been using a RPi as NAS since RPi was launched. On Unifi 5Mbps, streaming 1080p movies with DTS/DD is a breeze, but for DTS-HDMA, I need to turn off all running programs at the RPi. Not a problem really.
For XBMC, I tried OpenELEC and RaspBMC on another RPi; streaming of vides is good because of its capable graphic processor, but the overall response is laggy. Anyway I already have my HTPCs doing the job so I don't use RPi for XBMC. Another RPi with camera is used as security camera accessible from the network and internet.
Going to get the new model B+ soon.

Hi, how's the transfer speed when copying files to your NAS RPi? Do you usually get around 9-10 MB/s?
*
I hardly transfer files to or from the RPi NAS. Just tried it and get about 7 to 8MB/s copying to it, but only about 4MB/s copying from it over the network.
On the rare occasions when I want to copy files from the RPi NAS to another harddisk or thumbdrive, I connect them directly to the RPi so that the copying is not through the network but within the RPi.

I see, that speed is quite acceptable
From what I've read, some experienced slow speed as low as 1MB/s which is even worse,
Is your partition set as NTFS or Ext4/3? Seems like most users recommend use ext4 for better transfer speed  hmm.gif
Do you use your RPi other than NAS? Like as download manager from usenet/torrents/direct links.
*
WD Mybook 3TB setup as ext4 and samba for NAS on an RPi Model B. On the same box are Transmission for Txxxxxxx, and aMuled for eD2k.

I never really understood how eD2k works  hmm.gif
If you connect your 3TB ext4 formatted drive to your pc with windows,
Would you still be able to get that sweet USB3.0 transfer speed?
Planning to get the the B+ raspberry model soon, and still waiting for xiaomi box pro to test xbmc on it
*
Only can use amule when the file links are published as eD2k links. Just add the links to amule and it will do the rest. In my case I use amuled which is a daemon and run in the background without the x-window desktop.

Windows cannot read ext4 partitions, and I didn't bother to find any way to do so by installing additional drivers. If I need to connect the ext4 drive to the PC, I boot the PC in Ubuntu for the connection. And my PC is old, without USB3 port.

If you are keen, PM me for my RPi installation notes. That will save you a lot of time.

I using unifi orange router and android box.
1. Can I plug a hdd into the USB port behind the router and share the movie file into xbmc in my android box?
2. What file type is best for Full HD movies?
*
You are referring to the USB Shared Port in the DLink router.
I used it before but had stopped using it because the connected harddisk can only be accessed from one machine at any one time and the speed is very slow. It also requires a driver to be installed on a Windows machine, and I am not sure if the driver is available for Android box.

anyone had try to use raspberry pi to do as NAS and host all the HD movies on it then stream to xbmc?
How was the performance?
*
Hardware: Raspberry Pi Model B, WD Mybook 3TB, LAN connection
Software: Raspbian, Samba, Transmission and amuled
Movies: 1080p, DTS-HDMA, Dolby TrueHD, DTS, DD. (some movies >40GB)
Access from XBMC over network: DTS and DD - no problem. DTSHDMA or Dolby TrueHD - need to turn off Transmission and amuled.

yours hdd direct connected to raspberry pi right. What if connect to a USB hub only connect to the raspberry pi will it works? So can have many hdd.
*
My hdd connects to Pi directly.
USB hub need to be powered, so will consumed more electricity, since the setup is supposed to run 24/7. I suggest you get the new model B+ that comes with 4 USB ports.

Do you have the link where to buy the new model B+ with that 4 usb ports? And do your RPi also served as NAS? How good is the r/w speed?
*
I just got 2 B+ from RS.
I use RPi both as a downloader and NAS at the same time. Never bothered about the r/w speed, but streaming speed is decent enough.

generally, the bigger the file, the better video and audio. i m most probably wrong somewhere, but i go with this order:

*
This is not strictly true. Most of the time the size of the file depends on how many audio tracks it contains.
I have an mkv file that contains 10 audio tracks and 25 subtitles. I extracted only the English audio track and English/Chinese subtitles, reducing the file size from 40+GB to 20+GB. The video track remains the same.

After reading the above posts, I called TM (1-300-88-1221), talked to the Sales person, and upgraded my VIP5 to VIP10 at RM179/month, without any Hypp package. Heck, my wife had given the Hypp TV set top box to her friend, and we don't watch Hypp TV at all.
As for the TM/Dlink router, I had been waiting for it to give problem and have the excuse to get a better one. but somehow, it never missed a bit for the last 4 years. It works fine in streaming 1080p HDMA and TrueHD movies from the NAS.

nice upgrade, everything will now be twice as fast! thumbup.gif

i had my hypptvbox in the drawer for >3 yrs... becos i paid rm199 w/o pack.
after 5 calls and 1 month of haggling with unifi (after reading others paying 169, 179), i finally got megapack.
to be fair, the current megapack is reasonable with a few decent hd channels, so i started to use it again.

my orig dlink router is >3 yrs old, still working. but i had replaced it with an asus which gives stronger wifi and more stable ethernet.
it's good to know u had orig dlink router working with dtshdma/ddtruehd - can keep it as backup for just-in-case.
my orig modem kaput a few months back, had it replaced foc.
*
My TM/DLink router is on the first floor, and I have lan cables connecting it to another router on the ground floor. All htpcs are connected by lan cable, wireless lan only for the few tablets and mobile phones, present speed is more than adequate.

And no point for me to upgrade to Gigabit router at the moment because the NAS (Raspberry Pi) is not Gigabit-enabled. So as I said, I will consider a new router only when the present TM/DLink goes kaput.

From kodi testing, the idle is at about 6w, and full steam also, around 15w only IIRC

power brick is rated at 65w, way way lower than a typical htpc. The i3 power brick needs a 45w one only!

my only reason to get this is due to having it being left on 24/7, hence need the low power consumption
*
Have a separate really low powered device for your torrents.

Like many others, I have a raspberry pi for torrents. At the same time, I have a few media players that are used for watching only and their power consumption is not any issue.

Anyone know where i can walk in buy edimax nano wifi adapter in klang valley?
*
There are many nano wifi adapters that work with RPi, not necessary Edimax.
Check out http://elinux.org/RPi_USB_Wi-Fi_Adapters for compatibility before buying.
I am using 2 nos of TP-Link WN725N without any problem.
