I'm planning an update to my current xbmc setup, and plan on moving to the Intel NUC platform due to the cutesy size, currently running off an old MacBook CoreDuo

Which would be a better fit for the NUC platform? i5, i3 or Celeron?

My setup would be
- Win7 Ultimate/Professional
- uTorrent
- XBMC (SD series, and HD movies)

The machine will be left on 24/7, hence the NUC (or something similar if possible that consumes <65W). At a full load, the i5 NUC seems to draw up to ~26W. I'd prefer not to go through the mini pc configurations due to higher power rating, this will be a media pc only.

celeron is good enough, you will get everything you need with it...23.976Hz playback, HD audio passthrough....and of course the more usual stuffs like smooth 1080p playback. Just make sure you get an SSD or msata as the HDD
If you got more cash to splurge, feel free to go for the i3 or i5 version, but not really required for xbmc or casual windows 8 usage

all the info u need is here

http://kodi.wiki/view/Intel_NUC

it seems to be that HD audio is only available on linux for celeron, so i3 would be your best bet if you need HD audio

Thank you! I may go the i5 route if funds permit, for futureproofing.

Do share if you are able to create your Media Center with low power consumption capability with me ya! rclxms.gif

From kodi testing, the idle is at about 6w, and full steam also, around 15w only IIRC

power brick is rated at 65w, way way lower than a typical htpc. The i3 power brick needs a 45w one only!

my only reason to get this is due to having it being left on 24/7, hence need the low power consumption

Have a separate really low powered device for your torrents.

Like many others, I have a raspberry pi for torrents. At the same time, I have a few media players that are used for watching only and their power consumption is not any issue.

that is a thought

i have a thin client which i'm planning to hack with a hard disk and extra ram that may be able to do the job. this was supposed to be the original plan, to use it as the media server, but it's a crappy piece of device.

thanks for the advice!
