Hi guys.

Planning to make a XBMC + NAS (one or separate solution) for my new home. Most probably will go for RPi for XBMC and my old PC for NAS.

Any idea on how's the performance of RPi XBMC streaming 1080p from a NAS?

RPi makes a very good NAS and downloader, very low power and can run 24/7. Make it two Pis?

That is what I am planning to do. But can we implement some sort of a raid setup using RPi? I doubt it as you can only attached a USB storage device on the one and only USB port provided on the RPi. Unless there's a way of doing a raid on RPi, a NAS server made out of a PC is required. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I have only setup a simple samba NAS with one 3TB harddisk, not RAID. From what I read, RPi is not really suited for RAID. Whatever you do, always bear in mind the limitation of the RPi: the USB and LAN ports share the same controller.
*
Yeah. I checked a few online discussion regarding RPi NAS. The best thing about RPi NAS is that it consumes very little amount of power. Some even say USD 5 per year. But the worse thing about RPi NAS is the capability of making a NAS Raid, due to the reason you gave above.

Most probably I'll go for 2 RPi with one as a Single HD NAS RPi for the time being. Then when I have enough budget, I'll go for a Green NAS setup. Gotta keep the electricity bill low. Haha

Install windows and flexraid (google about it) and also install xbmc on it. If the old pc doesnt have hdmi, can just get a cheap radeon for it. Clean solution, no need to get separate devices for nas and media player brows.gif

Old PC can support 1080p media streaming? IIRC, my GC is NVidia 9600GT sweat.gif

I hardly transfer files to or from the RPi NAS. Just tried it and get about 7 to 8MB/s copying to it, but only about 4MB/s copying from it over the network.
On the rare occasions when I want to copy files from the RPi NAS to another harddisk or thumbdrive, I connect them directly to the RPi so that the copying is not through the network but within the RPi.

That's too slow sweat.gif

My hdd connects to Pi directly.
USB hub need to be powered, so will consumed more electricity, since the setup is supposed to run 24/7. I suggest you get the new model B+ that comes with 4 USB ports.
*
Do you have the link where to buy the new model B+ with that 4 usb ports? And do your RPi also served as NAS? How good is the r/w speed?

there are few movie scraping software outside...the one im using is MediaElch ( in case xbmc didnt scrape movie info property).
MediaElch will scrape movie info and save in to movie folder.

xbmc scraping is still the best and the most automated one.
just add movie folder, set which scraper to use, and let it run.

to be safe, just export video info to its individual folder.
by doing so i can bring my HD to any pc and play with xbmc without rescraping the movie info.
all 2000++ info will be there wherever i go.

Hi, I'm using MediaElch to scrape my movie. Is it normal that it took quite a while to complete scraping one movie? And there are some movies that unable to download the poster, and even if I download it manually, it just failed.

Guys, correct me if I'm wrong here. One Live TV m3u for example B.B.T.S. requires its own PVR client. If I want to add Malaysia Channel m3u, I would need to use another PVR Client. Kinda weird no?

p/s: I'm testing out BBTS IPTV Simple Client

bro,

a bit new on this thing.... about livetv using iptv simple client, can there be 2 or more .m3u? i already hv one in use, can't seem to find an option/selection to put a second one...?

live streampro... thumbup.gif tq.
i wait for those sport channels* under test to complete!
on pc, u copy and save on usb drive that long text file (paste bin link) on a simple text doc and name it anything u wish but as .xml file and in utf8 code. put usb drive into yr device.

then, install livestreampro the usual way if u dun already have it installed: video/addons/get more, assuming u hv the repos...
then, go to system/settings/video addons/enabled addons to find live streampro to configure.
androids: add source/choose file/rootfile system/mnt/sdb to find that .xml file
choose that file ok, click add source. u get prompt to name it, ok.
exit and play the addon like any other.

What I've read is that you can only put one livetv m3u in one IPTV Simple Client. Somehow a good news is that you can add another IPTV Simple Client dubbed IPTV Simple Client 2

Guys, I have a question here. I'm using MediaElch as my movie scrapper. So in Kodi, I would choose a folder as type movie and local information scrapper and it will read all my movies in that folder along with the Arts.

Sometimes, a movie failed to be scrapped properly by MediaElch making it have empty art when browsing the movie. What's the easiest way for me to make Kodi to reload to movie + the arts?

What I've did is
1. Change the content of the folder to none and clean the library.
2. Re-set the folder as type movie and load all the movie back.

These are the recommended steps I've found and honestly it is a bit too much

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Found the answer.

Refresh individually
Select the item in file view and either press I on the keyboard, or bring up the contextual menu (press C).
Select "Movie information" or "TV show information".
Then select "Refresh".
When refreshing individually you can also choose to just refresh or manually select images for various views (cover art, fanart, thumbnails, etc).

Thank you! I may go the i5 route if funds permit, for futureproofing.
