Hi all, I have a question here. Hope you guys can shed some light on this matter. For those who are taking MSc, MPhil, PhD (all by research), do you have to go through a candidacy? A preliminary presentation in order for you to be confirmed as a candidate for the university? If no, then it's alright. If yes, before your candidacy presentation, do you guys actually circulate your full candidacy proposal to everyone (e.g all academics in the school) before your presentation or only the abstract? Thanksss! |

QUOTE(Critical_Fallacy @ Feb 20 2014, 11:12 PM) The process of applying for candidacy is to develop a proposal for your research program (to be endorsed by your supervisor) and submit it to the Faculty of Graduate Studies. Once your proposal is approved, your candidacy for the research degree is confirmed. My issue is, apparently someone in my faculty says that the students' candidacy proposal has to be circulated to everyone in the whole school before candidacy presentation can be made. What's your issue? What are the institutions? Is this right? or is it wrong? |

QUOTE(PseudoGene @ Feb 23 2014, 10:09 PM) Why cannot mention the uni? The person in my faculty said "Full proposal including the whole proposal and references" Anyway, for UM, you would need to do a seminar presentation within the first two semester (or fourth for PhD), which is basically a proposal defense. You will need to prepare a short report containing literature reviews, methodology, up-to-date results and submit to the office. The officer would then circulate internal e-mail to everyone in the university to invite them to attend the presentation. The e-mail would only contain the candidate's name, student ID, topic of research, and (sometimes) a short description or abstract. I think this what someone from your faculty meant. |

QUOTE(Critical_Fallacy @ Feb 25 2014, 03:59 AM) Who is "someone" is that "someone"? A person in authority? well, that "someone" has a certain degree of authority. To a certain level only. It isn't something you can decide alone. Just discuss with your supervisor and follow the "correct" instructions. Already did. I just whip out the policy and show them. |

QUOTE(PseudoGene @ Feb 25 2014, 06:36 PM) Yes, you would need to submit the full proposal to the office. In fact, you may need to submit 3-4 hard copies of the report. I doubt you would need to distribute your full research proposal to everyone. I've submitted my full proposal to the office for graduate studies. Now, someone wanted to circulate my full research proposal to everybody zzz. As mentioned by fellow Critical_Fallacy, talk to your faculty's office and get the correct information. After all, you would still need to follow the instructions if you wish to graduate right? Cheers! PS: Do keep us posted after you have talked to them! The correct instruction- according to the policy is the circulation of abstract only. By the way, a decision has been made. That someone withdrawn whatever he/she had said. |

QUOTE(leah235 @ Feb 28 2014, 03:24 PM) submit proposal -> present to panel interviewer -> passed/ not -> panel determined the main subject according to expertise. yaya, this is the way it is supposed to be. If they wanna know more about the research, then come to the presentation. And NO, my proposal didn't get to circulate around. |

QUOTE(Starbucki @ Feb 28 2014, 03:18 PM) I could never understand why some institutions brandish around candidates' proposals like this. I wouldn't like my proposal flying around like that. Glad that you finally only needed to submit the abstract. yea, i have to dig around for the policies and show it to them. only then, they withdrawn their decision. luckily. |

QUOTE(PseudoGene @ Mar 4 2014, 12:32 AM) Terminating your supervisor? Hahaha. Anyway, glad everything turns up good for you in the end! Good luck in your presentation! I've terminated one of my supervisor before. But that was because he/she is not in my area of research at all. (You're good at keeping things ambiguous. Wouldn't even want to disclose the gender of your supervisor. Not bad not bad Yups, thanks. |
