Do I need to take TOEFL and GRE if I would like to purse PhD in Computer Science? Both of my Master degrees are taught entirely in English.

Thank you

Thanks for summoning me bro! sweat.gif

I don't know about the School of Computing, but for the Faculty of Engineering, we do not need to have TOEFL and GRE scores when we apply for admission. However, once we enroll as a Ph.D candidate, we are required to sit for an English test, called the Diagnostic English Test. This simple test is to gauge our standard of academic English writing.

You can always e-mail the person-in-charge of admission for the School of Computing and make an inquiry. icon_rolleyes.gif

Yes, appreciate if you can help to ask the people in School of Computing as our friend here, bb100 from faculty of engineering does not need to take it.

Thank you for your assistance  nod.gif  nod.gif  nod.gif

At first I also thought GRE is compulsory, as it is written in the Faculty of Engineering Ph.D admission website. Mana tau tak payah wohh. So it is better to check with the School lahh to confirm.

I remember GRE tu tak murah kalo nak ambil. sweat.gif

TOEFL/IELTS courses alone will cost me thousands liao  sweat.gif  sweat.gif  sweat.gif
Noted with thanks  notworthy.gif . Perhaps I should opt for Network security areas in Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in your current faculty.

You can e-mail some of the Professors and see if they have any openings for a Ph.D candidate. This is how I found my boss in NUS. brows.gif brows.gif

Tell them your area of interest and see if they are willing to take you in. brows.gif brows.gif

So, need to find and contact potential supervisor first. Noted, its quite awkward to write a letter liao  notworthy.gif

Let me summon another NUS Ph.D student, exquisite_markas.

Yea. Your application will be stronger if you already have a potential supervisor. Some more during the interview, the interviewers will ask u whether you sudah contact you punya supervisor.

Tak payah draft letter panjang2 bro. A few lines to intro yourself and your intentions, a few lines to describe you punya research interests, and finally ask him if he is looking for Ph.D students. Senang je bro. Lepas tu tunggu reply. biggrin.gif

This is not applicable to NUS SOC where PhD students are admitted without pre-assigned supervisors. They will look for supervisors only when they have started their PhD studies. Some professors even require you to do well in some courses (especially those taught by them) before agreeing to supervise you.

The admission committee most probably does not expect you to make contact with the professors but it would not hurt at all to take advantage of this.

You doing your PhD in SoC dude?

Currently I'm 'simpanan lantikan' in SPA. If there is any vacancy, they will open to the reserves first.

For the PhD application, I'll be applying using my Masters as my degree is second class upper only:

1st Master: 3.44
2nd Master : 3.87 (Expected to get 3.89 or 3.90 by the end of May/June 2014)

My degree is above 3 but so so only.  sweat.gif  sweat.gif  sweat.gif
