The body of David Sharp still sits in a cave, known as “Green Boots Cave”, at the top of Mount Everest. David attempted the climb in 2005 and near the top, stopped in this cave to rest. His body eventually froze in place rendering him unable to move. Over 30 climbers passed by him as he sat freezing to death. Some heard faint moans and realized he was still alive. They stopped and spoke with him. He was able to identify himself but was unable to move. Brave climbers moved him into the Sun in an attempt to thaw him but eventually, realizing David would be unable to move, were forced to leave him to die. His body still sits in the cave and is used as a guide point for other climbers nearing the summit.

Bodies of those who died at Advanced Base Camp are also left lying where they succumbed to the cold.

user posted image
George Mallory died in 1924 and was the first to make an attempt to reach the summit of the world’s highest mountain. His body, still perfectly preserved, was identified in 1999.

user posted image
Climbers often stack rocks and packed snow around the bodies in an effort to protect them from the elements. Nobody knows why this body skeletonized.

user posted image
Bodies lie on the mountain frozen in the position they were in when the person died. Here a man had fallen off the trail and too tired to rise, died where he fell.

user posted image
It is assumed that this person died while resting against a snow bank which has since evaporated leaving the body in this odd raised position.

user posted image
Some die from falls leaving their bodies in a location where they can be seen but not recovered. Bodies that are located on small ledges are often rolled off to hide them from view of other climbers only to be buried by falling snow.

user posted image
Wind and environment sometimes leaves clothing in tatters as seen in this “collection” of bodies lying at the bottom of a dangerous cliff.

user posted image
Sun and wind have dried this body leaving a “mummified” corpse.

user posted image
The body of “Green Boots” (an Indian climber who died in 1996) lies near a cave that all climbers pass on their way to the peak. Green Boots now serves as a waypoint marker that climbers use to gauge how near they are to the summit. Green Boots became separated from his party in 1996 and sought this mountain overhang (really a small, open mouthed cave) to use as protection from the elements. He sat there shivering in the cold until he died. The wind has since blown his body over.

Francys Arseniev, an American women who fell while descending with a group (that included her husband), pleaded with passerby’s to save her. While climbing down the side of a steep section of the mountain, her husband noticed she was missing. Knowing that he did not have enough oxygen to reach her and return to base camp, he chose to turn back to find his wife anyway. He fell to his death in the attempt to climb down and reach his dying wife. Two other climbers did successfully reach her but knew carrying her off of Mount Everest was not an option. They comforted her for a while before leaving her to die. Feeling great remorse, they returned eight years later vowing to find the body and enshrine it in an American flag (they succeeded). After details of the disastrous climb became known, it was realized that Francys Arseniev had become the first woman from the United States to reach the summit of Mount Everest without the aid of bottled oxygen.

I believe many of those who died actually reached the peak. If you climbed mountains you would know the descent is actually much more dangerous. Most accidents happen during then.

Can't be brave if you are not a fool. wink.gif

There are two kinds of fool:

1) Knows nothing of the danger and plows ahead regardless. Brave, and also foolish.

2) Knows exactly what are the risks involved and very much against him, and still choose to go ahead. Foolish, and also brave.

Are you a brave fool or a wise coward?

The real killer is the altitude. Thin oxygen cause the climber to get tired quickly. Your body react to the thin oxygen by reducing you metabolic rate and telling you to reduce your oxygen consumption by taking a rest. Many succumb and laid down to rest to which they never wake. You need an iron will to defy your biological system and go on.

sometimes, the destination is no longer important /significant (though its a bonus) but the journey. there are many people in this life who are too chicken to do what they like and put effort in doing it. All the think is immediate reward so anything that took years to achieve (if at all).. they shun them.

Not necessary involving risky and life threatening stuff, Its those who are brave to proceed have found they might benefit/learn MORE during the process than than the outcome . That itself is a form of success as a human.

Many are alive physically but "dead inside".
Some dead but actually "lived" (or pretty much alive in other people's eyes and mind through what they did to mankind before).

sigh. regret replying to a troll, a "dead" one somemore.

just curious, how to help? even have the will to help i dont think can. It is hard enough to manage on your own yet you are trying to take on the burden of 2 people on yourself? that's suicide. Help if they need provision such as food or drinks ( if i have enough for my own) but if she is injured and expect me to carry, im so sorry i cant. Besides climbers already knew the risk and their own their own.

sadly, stopping and helping means usng up one's already depleting strength , energy and (oxygen, food etc) rations ... hence possibly dooming the helper as well.

I dont think they do either - that's why the famous answer to "why?" is "because it's there"

If I remember correctly, David Sharp last moment was caught on film in a documentary.

The team that passed by him didn't trying to (or most likely, couldn't) help him.. this raises certain controversy back then. However it was settled later on, the team thought David already dead.

The title of the documentary.. I think it's "Dying for Everest" or "Everest: Beyond the Limit"

If you guys are interested in reading up on Everest, you should go read about the 1996 disaster where 8 people died as a result of a blizzard. Jon Krakauer (who was a journalist in the expedition) wrote a decent book called Into Thin Air about it which is a pretty good read.

Everest itself isn't all that deadly an ascent compared to some of the other summits around such as K2 or Annapurna but it is highly commercialised and as such, a lot of people underestimate the dangers of spending an extended amount of time over 8,000m where your brain is literally dying every second you're up there from oxygen deprivation (i.e. hypoxia).

I think, of everyone who goes on an expedition to Everest, the most admirable are the ones that are able to recognise when conditions are too dangerous and decide to turn around. Sure, they might be out $50K+ but at least they're still alive and can their luck at an ascent in the future (if they're that determined).

Respect for the fallen glory.
They serve a good guideline for us and remind us to keep going even if our body fails us.

The wind has since blown his body over.

there is no glory in death.
life goes on.
even before death, while dying, people move on.
proven insignificant.
now, tell me, what do these "martyrs" seek at the top of the mountain?
self accomplishment? glory for their motherland? grace of their kings?
money and fame that comes with it?
are those even coming from the peaks?

sure their feats were great/semi great.
a pat in the back! hot cup of tea on the way home! if they get to get home.
those that did not? you have to admit, they are just glorified landmarks that happens to be there by chance.
