If its just stationary products you're shooting, you will be working with close distances. A large zoom is unnecessary in my opinion; its not like you're shooting something a hundred metres away.

Quite frankly all you need is a simple compact camera. Any would do, I do need see optical quality as very important for your use, unless you are dealing with luxury goods and need to really impress potential customers with extremely high quality and detailed full page shots; more likely your catalogue would have several small pictures per page.

Well, does it really matter? Will your catalogue be of high resolution to begin with?
