i want to ask regarding the dos version, is it possible to install windows 7 by just inserting the CD in? is there anywhere i can follow to install drivers after installing windows 7? i may want to get the dos version due to budget =/. thanks in advance!
*
Yes, you can install win7 by inserting the DVD. As for the driver, there's a webpage in the CD which you can open and install one-by-one. Install all of them...

If I change my Y50 HDD to SSD, will it void the warranty?
*
I doubt so. I was told that as long as the item is a normally upgradeable part, it shouldn't void the warranty (e.g. ram).

I cannot confirm this though but it would be good to pose the question to the service center folks at level 4, low yat.

Just call lenovo and the representative said, if change to SSD by ourself, the only part that not cover by warranty is just the SSD, other parts (battery, mobo etc) WILL NOT VOID.

1...tb ssd......it gonna cost half of the y50 itself

500gb is equally expensive. 240/250gb is okay but the size can't get you much applications or games.

I feel like upgrading to ssd for my y50. My lappy feels slow d.  Is the crucial mx100 512gb officially in malaysia d?
*
i feel you... it's actually kinda slow. i guess you could reconsider getting high performance hdd if you're thinking of upgrading ssd

you can look at it this way, the P35W has a VGA and a HDMI, technically, you can have dual monitor setup in native while Y50 doesn't (it has only 1 HDMI). there are ways to connect to multiple monitors but we shall not dwell deep into that.
as discussed earlier, vga is still very much useful for projectors.

another thing is optical drive; to the very least P35W comes with an optical drive while Y50 doesn't. this might be a troublesome for some if you need to have access to the optical drive and it's not there. usually for those who tend to reformat every once a while or listening to cd or watching dvds. yes, there's workaround for it.

last but not least, y50 have only one storage bay and it's either you use it with a sata or ssd. P35W gives you the flexibility to upgrade at a later time (when ssd price drops). this is a direct performance attribute.

not that it's too much of a problem without the optical drive, just that sometimes when you need it and you left the external drive somewhere (might happen since it's not often used)... get my point?

but yea, we can live without it. just need some getting used to.

Guys, i have a few questions.

i'll be buying a Y50 DOS version soon and i'm planning on installing win 7 for it.

1) Does every y50 DOS available in malaysia is using AUO panel? is there any chance of getting Chi Mei panel? how to check the panel?

2) What version of Nvidia driver is recomended?

thanks guys.
*
1) don't need to check, just use it. if u want better viewing experience, hook it up to an external monitor.
2) use the one from the cd included

The Version Y50 with 4K display doesn't have any variation with free dos yet I perhaps.... the free dos version are nice if just for using linux or windows 8 (non-pro)... I still have original windows 7 retail that can be use back with this laptop without extra spending on OS if there are free-dos version available... Hopefully there are free-dos version for this model in future smile.gif ....

By the way I heard that some of you guys have problem with the keyboard right?.... maybe can advice us how to aggressively check this model keyboard key symptom before buying... because keyboard are the least of things that we check upon buying smile.gif....

Another Question, I google around and I'm a bit confused about the RAM upgrade for Y50 mode, anyone know the exact information?... if.. Y50 (based on ram model / firmware upgrade / etc) can be upgrade to 32GB or not? hehe... I'm Just hoping that it could... thinking to run parallel VM for my development environment smile.gif.. anyone have any Idea / Theory or... the best if anyone have hands-on / practical on upgrading the RAM smile.gif...

Thanks in advance for any Informative Info regarding this smile.gif

there is not much of a problem other than some button being a little odd-sized if you're used to conventional usb keyboards. and you are wrong about the keyboard too, it's the first thing you check, the rest is just pure luck smile.gif
the current 8gb is good enough for your usage, but if you must then add another 8gb stick.

Hi All, sharing my experience again =)
I call the Lenovo Helpdesk to double confirm the way i register my extended warranty is correct.
And they had a checked and told me the online registration system is not up to date, therefore not able to recognize my serial number.
So they gave me a solution to send my details to the warranty department to register manually <ASEAN@lenovoreg.com>.

So what did you send in the email?
