Just cant really decide between this or a Gigabyte P35W V2.

Okay, I am quite tempted to get a Y50 now, considering the price is pretty good for the specs.

QUOTE(imin @ Aug 3 2014, 01:02 PM) I am well aware of that. I am just wondering is worth saving that 2k for a cheaper and weaker laptop considering the Y50 is damn value for money.P35W has better GPU and also better designed heat management but Y50 is extremely well priced. |

QUOTE(kwayteow @ Aug 3 2014, 10:25 PM) P35W has a better GPU, true, but the 870m is still the Kepler architecture which runs much hotter than the Maxwell in the y50. I checked the temps, due to difference in heat sink design, both are similar at max temps where both are around 80-90C at max load in 30C ambiance room temperature. |

QUOTE(kwayteow @ Aug 4 2014, 12:20 AM) At high load both laptops are around 60C/64C max (on the surface, not chip temps), but you can see the Y50 is much cooler (32C) at idle than the Gigabyte (50C): I was talking about core chip temps which are largely similar between both at Furmark stress test with both close to 90C, except Y50 on stock paste while P35W is on IC Diamond. Surface temps arent as important as core temps as if core temps is lower, surface temps will drop too. I am using a 5 years old G73JH with similar surface temps after all these years. NotebookCheck P34Gv2 review NotebookCheck Y50 Review Other than that, they're both slim laptops with good build quality. GPU Comparison ^You can select 870m and 860m to see the difference in benchmarks. Is that worth the extra 2k? I know the difference between 860M and 870M but I cant decide between both as is it worth putting extra 2k for a better performance GPU, better designed heat management(P35W actually have dual vents, Y50 doesnt) and more future proof. That is the problem now and I really cant make up my mind because both actually fit what I am looking for in a laptop such as easy to DIY or clean heatsinks, good value for performance offered(as both provide the best GPU of the range, like Y50 has the 4GB Maxwell 860M and P35W has a Kepler 6GB 870M) and general usability seemed ok. Would love a 17 inch laptop with 6k price tag but looks like I cant find one that offered the same 860M or 870M that Y50 and P35W offers. I was set on getting P35W until I saw Y50. QUOTE(kwayteow @ Aug 4 2014, 01:41 PM) The difference in performance seems to be only +5 to +15 fps, and the 860m can already play most current games at ultra. IMO not worth 2k more, that's all 5 to 15 FPS is a pretty noticeable difference. You can either crank up a level of detail or push it to 60 easily. There's the MSI GS70, 17" with 870m around 6-7k. I beg to differ, 860M definitely not enough to most games. Considering that Project CARS and Elite Dangerous will be out at the end of the year, I doubt 860M will max both games. I have access to Project CARS Beta and it is quite demanding if you want it to look remotely good. I am not planning to max both games but I like something that is more future proof as I am intending to use it for the next 5 years like my G73JH. Are Lenovo Ideapad durable long term? I have a Gigabyte ancient Windows XP tablet from 2004. It still run pretty well till today which partly why I am rooting for P35W as their build quality is quite good. I am not really a fan of MSI. The designs are too flashy while not that easy to maintain compared to Y50 and P35W. I really emphasize on maintenance this time round as my G73JH was a nightmare to maintain. QUOTE(leng2 @ Aug 4 2014, 02:54 PM) you can look at it this way, the P35W has a VGA and a HDMI, technically, you can have dual monitor setup in native while Y50 doesn't (it has only 1 HDMI). there are ways to connect to multiple monitors but we shall not dwell deep into that. I dont mind losing optical drive as I dont even remember when is the last time I used mine.as discussed earlier, vga is still very much useful for projectors. another thing is optical drive; to the very least P35W comes with an optical drive while Y50 doesn't. this might be a troublesome for some if you need to have access to the optical drive and it's not there. usually for those who tend to reformat every once a while or listening to cd or watching dvds. yes, there's workaround for it. last but not least, y50 have only one storage bay and it's either you use it with a sata or ssd. P35W gives you the flexibility to upgrade at a later time (when ssd price drops). this is a direct performance attribute. Your other points seemed to make a lot of sense especially the dual HDD bays which is a life saver. Thanks for the advise. |
