That will depends on your salary and also are you into used watch.
A typical used Rolex submariner causes u rm18-25k. ( quite common Rolex model that young to middle age ppl get )
Can pass down to your grand kids if u want. I find it quite cool if one day your grandkid told his girl this is from my grandpa

To me a little pointless. Unless u are a collector. If you buy with savings, i bet you would hardly wear it because its too expensive. And thats the point. If you want a daily wearer get those less than RM2000 stuff. Its almost as expensive as your smartphone.

If a person buys a RM10000 above watch, i'm sure he would be phobia to wear it out daily. Not because of getting his/her hands chopped off, but the maintenance involved. Its not to say that person who wants to buy one from 2-6 months salary cannot afford it. But don't you think its a hassle to keep watching over the watch because of mentioned value.

Hmm why buy a watch that you won't wear ? Even if i bought a patek i would wear it on a rotation basis.

Althought i would agree to wearing a sports/divers watch more often due to their rigidity (Rolex Sub / Omega SMP) as compared to maybe a dressy JLC or Patek.

Back to topic - I would buy what i want as long as i can afford it without concerning myself too much with the price. Its called luxury watches .. money spent when other commitments and investments are comfortably achieved.

To some people these is to mark an achievements. Most of my friends buy themselves a TAG when they start working. Why? It's just a significant reminder to themselves they've worked hard enough. For me I guess it's all about self satisfaction. I know for sure if I were to buy a Seiko 5 copy of the Rolex Submariner I will not be satisfied. I will always think ahhhh one day when I earn enough that will be my goal. I am 25 and I am wearing a simple RM35 Casio.

And nope I think being able to pass down a Rolex to my grandson is a very meaningful thing to do. I'd wish my grandfather or even my father to give me a Patek or Rolex with family heritage or so. Most of these watches design are classic and everlasting. Most of these designs never really change for many years because they simply work. The Submariners, Datejust or even the Calatrava remains their distinguish look after many years. In fact I am here on this forum to hunt for vintage 1950s to 1970s Rolex to hopefully replace my Casio.

Just my two cents. I can be wrong but this is just what I think. So don't flame me.

Cannot measure in terms of salary. A good watch lasts for decades. So get one which you like. Difference in costs spread over years is not going to be much

Agreed, especially automatic watches. They are classic if you send for regular servicing. It can too be inherited, and why not?

For me, it all boils down to self-satisfaction. Working hard, you might want to give yourself a bonus if you can afford it.

Also, getting a good watch which can be kept for years to come, why not? Some of them might depreciate but then, if its meant for self-satisfaction and keeping, who cares?

with the frequent robberies around, you would be grateful if you could wear your watch without fear....dont even think about passing it down unless you keep it in safe with a self winding box and not wear at all.

For those who are worried about safety, you must know when to wear the watch. I use my Tag only for work or when i'm meeting up with friends at safe places. Other than that, i just use my old G shock.

it's subjective to ask why wearing expensive watches.. some will say for satisfaction and some for business purpose to convince the customer

it's like why paying rm1200 for bodykit when it give you zero benefit except draining your wallet?

don't really understand people who are not willing to spend on good watches, these same people would rather spend 2k on a smartphone which is most likely to be outdated in 1-2 years time. and another 2k for another replacement. a good watch, if taken care well enough can last for decades!

100% agree. I love to collect watches especially mid ranges, like Omega, Breitling, IWC, Baume and Mercier, etc. IN Japan you can actually get these watches at really discounted prices at wholesaler instead of dealers. You can also sell of your watches easily as well. Watches is one of the small luxury that I can really dable in. Hope one day can moved into the higher end watches like Hublot and Panerai.

personal gratification.

we all find joys in different things in life. some people feel joy and happiness driving their mercsilly benz despite owing bank massive amount of money to pay for it. some people who have 7 figure savings in their bank account is happily commuting around in their myvi.

a Patek is a mechanical masterpiece and an art piece of a master artisan, but only to the people who appreciates it.

how much to spend is the wrong question to ask.. more like, how much satisfaction do you get from it, and how much work are you willing to put in for it.

because fine timepiece is not something they appreciate. because the "clock" on their 2k smartphone which synchronizes with atomic clocks every other hour is going to be more accurate than any mechanical timepiece in the world. because their 2k smartphone not only has a "clock" but it has an alarm build in, with snooze features.

do not push your views onto others. they are probably thinking we are crazy spending so much for an item that *only* tells time.

they look at it from a function standpoint, and yes, the smartphone can do so much more..check email on the go, send schedulers, book air tickets.. so on and so forth.

Couldnt put it much better myself. I do read lots about books about how this watches are made and it really fascinates me on the accuracy and the amount of details put into a watch. For those really expensive ones, I can only appreciate in a bookk though...

The same reason a lot of folks buys Hublots and Panerais .

IN Japan there are a lot of what you call "wholesaler" or maybe dealer, not really sure what you call it. They buy in bulk and then sell it cheap. They also deal with used watches. For new watches the shop provide their own warranty as well as giving you a original certificate of the watch. If you can read Japanese, I can give you some homepages to refer to. Some I think also target China market hence they have it in Chinese as well. And most also offer tax free for tourist.

From my POV, Omega is higher end den Panerai.. Panerai just famous among youngster nowaday and is from Italy.. is different class and standard it brings out compare to Omega. Personal favourite for now is still Breitling though . . .

because fine timepiece is not something they appreciate. because the "clock" on their 2k smartphone which synchronizes with atomic clocks every other hour is going to be more accurate than any mechanical timepiece in the world. because their 2k smartphone not only has a "clock" but it has an alarm build in, with snooze features.

do not push your views onto others. they are probably thinking we are crazy spending so much for an item that *only* tells time.

they look at it from a function standpoint, and yes, the smartphone can do so much more..check email on the go, send schedulers, book air tickets.. so on and so forth.

Hardly, I'd think that my funds manager is doing a great job at being frugal and practical. He knows how to put things to multiple use, like a phablet. Sure as hell comfortable to put my money with him. If he's wearing a Panerai, he's a show off rooster sucker. (Probably sucking me since I'm his client.) Or he is plain clueless. Neither good scenario good for me.

If he's wearing a Rolex, then I know my money is in good hands.

both panerai and rolex fall under the herd mentality anyway.

I have no idea how to handle that yet. Probably haven't met a person wearing a smartwatch like a real daily watch. Pebble for fun, LG R watch for a week and sold it, etc.

With one big difference. One is proven over time, the other, excuse me for the lack of better language, is running off fumes of bullshit. But I'd buy one if I have that kinda money laying around, which I don't since I have better things to do with it. Still wouldn't trade a Rolex for it.

Warren Buffett wears a Rolex, and I'd trust him with my money. In fact, he'd buy Rolex if it was on sale, that tells you a lot coming from that man who can see value before time makes it a reality.

I would say 99% of those buying branded watches for self satisfaction be it collecting and keep in safe nor wearing it as daily beater.

Price does not matter as long as he/she can afford it, right?

A watch should not cost more than a month salary and a real man shouldn't be struggling for vanity purchase.

based on my current earning, a ceiling of rm500/watch/month. If beyond that budget, I may have to delay another new watch purchase for few months.

Handbag got different type for different purpose and different color to match the color of the heels.

A man just needs one Submariner for everything. From black tie event, to diving, to being a super spy. Just ask James Bond.

For a black tie, I think a proper dress watch is required. James Bond no choice, spy ma so life more important than watch. hehe.
Actually I would prefer a GMT for more practical purpose in this time and age unless you are a spy lo who dives.

Omega Seamaster 300 currently. Omega for the modern bond movies. Rolexes for the old.

A typical used Rolex submariner causes u rm18-25k. ( quite common Rolex model that young to middle age ppl get )
Can pass down to your grand kids if u want. I find it quite cool if one day your grandkid told his girl this is from my grandpa
