for military model especially ship, if u r looking for detail, u need to get PE (photo etch)
for painting, u can get a budget airbrush, but the most killing your wallet is color paint & leveling thinner.

PE part for detailing. u need to paint the PE part as well...like below

You need super glue for PEs since they are brass/ metal and not plastic which is why plastic cement don't stick. Also a few different type of tweezer tips can help to hold them while gluing.

have never try decal on wooden deck.. but yes, like ur method mentioned..

clear gloss > decal + mark sol > clear matt...

for photo etch cut out, u can use the edge of the cut to "PRESS" the PE out.
btw, how much the PE? Do u get the propeller PE for  air plane?

i just strait build my 1/700 akagi without any PE, bcos the Full PE mininum need rm 220 above.

Sadly military kit is still a very niche market here. Finding a kit is already hard enough, let alone find the right PE for it.

Meanwhile the PE for Shinano is abit pain in the arse...

Yep, it was 1/700 scale and as Exiled pointed out it IS based on the Yamato Class battleship.
Funnily enough as i research the Shinano, the IJN planners have a "great" idea of using her as a forward floating refueling station for the Unryuu class planes to refit and rearm while supposedly sit closer to the frontline and taking hits (which is why her rated plane capacity is around 30+ which is actually crap for something of that size). Needless to say the admirals are not happy with that idea.

1/350 modern war ship or aircraft carrier is consider cheap.
ONLY IJN ship r pricy, less option (propeller, PE pon tak kasi), less detail compared to other ww2 ship that made from trumpeter & hobby boss.
