mine so far 100% working after update to 757 fw. before this was like u said 50-50

edit: Android 4.4.2 Kitkat seem to allowed user to use shutter key even when the screen is off....just tried it out and it worked but jellybean won't work I supposed.
it should work even when the screen is off. make sure u set the quick launch setting to on. and when pressing the shutter button, make sure you fully press it (2 level pressed)
