Debut disaster
Abdukodir Khusanov’s City career got off to a nightmare start. Just three minutes into his debut, the Uzbek centre-back attempted to head the ball back to Ederson but got it all wrong. Nicolas Jackson intercepted the weak back pass and squared it to Noni Madueke for a tap in that put Chelsea 1-0 up. The 20-year-old did not look up to speed and found himself booked after just four minutes, after trying to recover the ball following another under-hit pass. It was the first-ever appearance from an Uzbek in the Premier League and it began catastrophically. Khusanov did start to look more comfortable as the game went on. He made an important block to deny Jadon Sancho in the ninth minute and this seemed to help him settle. Khusanov was withdrawn just before the hour mark.

Haaland the match-winner
On his first return to the Etihad since signing a massive nine-and-a-half-year contract extension, Erling Haaland proved decisive. On a day where Mohamed Salah and Alexander Isak both found the net, Haaland reminded everyone why he is the premier goalscorer in the division. He caught Robert Sanchez in no man’s land in the 68th minute and his lofty finish put City 2-1 up. In the second half, Maresca made the decision to leave his defenders one-on-one against Haaland and it cost Chelsea. In the 87th minute, the Norwegian striker held off Levi Colwill with ease and played Phil Foden clean through to secure the win for the home side.

Lively Marmoush
It was not the debut that he would have dreamt of but it was certainly better than Khusanov’s. Omar Marmoush was only announced as a City player on Thursday. After just two training sessions he was handed a starting spot today. The Egyptian looked lively throughout and was a constant threat. Although he failed to secure a goal involvement, it was a promising start to his life in Manchester. Replaced by Kevin De Bruyne in the 74th minute, Marmoush will hope to build on his debut.

Player Ratings
Ederson – 7.5
Stayed sharp despite some lengthy periods of inactivity. Swept up when he had to and made some decent stops too.
Matheus Nunes – 7
Another action-packed outing at right-back, supporting Bernardo Silva tirelessly. Was beaten far too easily for Brugge’s goal.
John Stones – 8.5
Pep Guardiola implied in the build-up that the 30-year-old wouldn’t be re-adopting his old midfield role for this one, but clearly nobody told the Barnsley Beckenbauer! Drifted wherever he pleased on the pitch to accommodate his team’s possession play, even getting assists for Kovacic and Savinho.
Manuel Akanji – 7.5
Has been criticised recently for switching off when defending his penalty area, but aside from an unlucky touch on the cross leading to Brugge’s opener, was flawless in his concentration.
Josko Gvardiol – 8
Continued his great recent form in advanced zones. Doubled up with Phil Foden and forced the winner with his movement and class.
Mateo Kovacic – 7.5
Remained vulnerable when facing quickly-breaking opponents, but did his job on the ball with the flourish of an exceptional equalising goal.
Ilkay Gundogan – 5.5
Picked for his on-the-ball qualities to help control possession, and he did that. That approach made City totally toothless in the first half though, and his flaws were laid bare when Brugge opened the scoring by running straight through his area of the pitch. Hooked at half-time.
Kevin de Bruyne – 7.5
So often the man to make the difference on the big Champions League nights, de Bruyne was crucial in different ways tonight as he selflessly led the press and used his free role to pop up all over the attack and exchange passes.
Bernardo Silva – 6.5
Struggled to make proper inroads into the Brugge defence, but never gave up having ceded possession.
Erling Haaland – 6.5
Couldn’t make the most of his half-chances or the one big opening afforded him, but did some decent work when dropping into deeper positions.
Phil Foden – 6.5
Didn’t get any change out of Joaquin Seys. Comfortable in possession, outside of putting in some easily-claimed crosses.
Substitutes
Savinho – 8.5 (MOTM)
Seemingly lost the trust of his boss when he was withdrawn at half-time in Paris last week, but if there was any way to get back in Guardiola’s good books, Savinho did it tonight. Came on and lifted the team and the stadium with his positive play, having a hand in the winner and scoring the third himself.
Rico Lewis – N/A

Player Ratings
Ederson: Came out of his box smartly to snuff out danger. Could he have done better with the goal? Decent saves in the second half. 6
Nunes: Two schoolboy errors in the first 45 minutes that should put paid to him at right-back. He has his qualities but they are not defensive. 4
Stones: Missed a sitter at the start of the second half, and looked understandably rusty settling into the defence. 6
Akanji: Lurking again for the goal, although he just about kept the composure at the back as City held on. 6
Gvardiol: One of City's best attackers again, and got his reward with the second goal. Some big blocks at the back too. Undroppable. 8
Kovacic: He is a big part of why City were so wide open for Club Brugge to tear through, yet he also forced and scored the equaliser. 6
Silva: His workrate keeps him in the team but he needs to offer more going forward than he did tonight. 6
De Bruyne: Radar was way off for most of the game, with some good chances missed or wasted as his decisions didn't come off. 5
Gundogan: Played higher up the pitch in a more familiar role and nearly found a few openings butt was taken off at half-time. 6
Foden: Similar to De Bruyne, nothing he tried really came off whether on the left or through the middle. 5
Haaland: Nearly earned a goal as he stormed through after dispossessing a defender and will feel like he should have had a goal. 6
Substitutes
Savinho (for Gundogan, 46) Changed the game when he came on and Brugge could not cope with him. 9
Lewis (for De Bruyne, 81) Kept things tight in the middle.

Player Ratings
Ederson (6/10):
Not loads he could do to stop Brugge's goal and compensated for his awful displays in the competition with a confident performance. Quick out of his area to snaffle the visitors' passes in behind and equal to most of their attempts.
Matheus Nunes (4/10):
His high positioning left him vulnerable to breakaways and he was left for dead by Jutgla for the goal.
John Stones (6/10):
Played a risky game playing so high up but was good on the ball. Missed a free header at the start of the second half.
Manuel Akanji (6/10):
Got in the way of a Jutgla shot and managed to bait Brugge's press with solid ball retention.
Josko Gvardiol (8/10):
A monstrous presence at both ends of the pitch. His block on Talbi saved a goal and then he set up City's second.
Bernardo Silva (5/10):
Lacklustre in the first half, failing to trouble Brugge down the right. Improved when he moved inside in the second period.
Mateo Kovacic (7/10):
Pulled City back from the brink with his run through the middle and arrowed strike into the bottom corner, albeit aided by generous Brugge defending.
Ilkay Gundogan (4/10):
Lost the ball leading to Brugge's goal. Scored an offside goal before that but did little else and could have had few complaints when hooked at half-time for Savinho.
Kevin De Bruyne (5/10):
Made some bad decisions in possession in the first half and should have done better with a good shooting opportunity in the second.
Erling Haaland (5/10):
Fired at Simon Mignolet with a golden opportunity but was kept too quiet for a game of such magnitude.
Phil Foden (6/10):
Had some decent moments and came close to scoring on a couple of occasions
Subs & Manager
Savinho (9/10):
Completely changed the game and City have him to thank for avoiding disaster.
Rico Lewis (N/A):
Stayed calm after replacing De Bruyne in the 81st minute and saw City through.
Pep Guardiola (7/10):
Took drastic action by throwing on Savinho at half-time and it was a masterstroke.

Player Ratings
Ederson-7.5/10: Made several crucial saves throughout the game. He is back to his best and that’s obvious to see. A good performance from Ederson.
Matheus Nunes-4/10: With Kyle Walker gone he has to play at right-back. But he must stop rushing into challenges. It cost City tonight and it’s something that he has to rectify.
John Stones-8.5/10: Manchester City’s best player over the 90 minutes for me. Defended well and grabbed an assist. If he stays fit he could be crucial for the remainder of the season for Pep Guardiola’s side.
Manuel Akanji-6/10: Not his best display. He was better in the second half than he was in the first.
Josko Gvardiol-8/10: Another quality performance from Gvardiol. He was immense going forward, and it was his cross that led to City taking the lead. Also defended well.
Mateo Kovacic-8/10: He scored City’s equaliser and his drive from midfield helped City immensely in the second half. However, Manchester City must sign another midfielder to allow Kovacic to play in a role that he is more suited to.
Ilkay Gundogan-5/10: Had a goal disallowed for offside but offered nothing much else before he was substituted.
Kevin De Bruyne-6.5/10: His first half performance mirrored his team’s, which was poor. He was alot better in the second half before being substituted.
Bernardo Silva-6/10: He was poor in the first half on the right wing. He was alot better in the second half playing in a role he is better suited to.
Phil Foden-6.5/10: Playing Foden on the left wing is a waste of his talents. He was much better when moved to his preferred position in the second half.
Erling Haaland-6/10: Only had one chance of note but his pressing was much better.
Substitutes
Savinho-8/10: Turned the game when he came on at halftime. Scored a goal and made Manchester City infinitely more dangerous going forward. A superb performance.
Rico Lewis-N/A: Not on long enough to mark.

Stefan Ortega – 3.5
The stylistic differences between Ortega and Ederson are clear to every City fan by now, so it’s fair to say that the Brazilian’s passing prowess was missed today. Ortega isn’t usually a slouch in that regard, but did lack some composure today, and should have done better with his hands on the third goal too.
Matheus Nunes – 3.5
Far from his easiest assignment at right-back against a driven Leandro Trossard with a point to prove after his red card at the Etihad Stadium. That being said, he rarely had an impact going the other way either, looking extremely hesitant whenever a decision had to be made.
John Stones – 3
The picture of composure in Wednesday’s win, he caused panics in the ranks straight away with a hospital pass which led to the team going straight behind. Unlucky to see Partey’s strike fly in off his back, but can’t pass the blame for allowing Lewis-Skelly and Havertz the space to score.
Manuel Akanji – 3
Wasn’t done any favours by Stones’ ball prior to Arsenal’s opener, but that can’t excuse the terrible mistake which followed. None of the following goals were directly attributable to him, but he formed part of a backline which was rickety at best.
Josko Gvardiol – 5.5
More reserved than usual with the natural attackers Savinho and Marmoush taking seniority down his side. Wasn’t quite as plagued with the ball-playing issues his fellow defenders suffered from, although the fourth goal came down his side.
Mateo Kovacic – 3.5
None of the headline-grabbing controversy of his dodged red card here last season, but couldn’t really help the City cause in the engine room. Blitzed in transition.
Bernardo Silva – 4
Did his best to drop deep and aid the ailing backline in their efforts to play out from the back. Very little influence to speak of in attack.
Phil Foden – 3.5
Had some bright moments when spraying the ball around from the pockets, but failed to make any decisive impact in the final third and unfortunately did so to Arsenal’s benefit in his own half.
Savinho – 6
What little danger City provided largely came through his speed. Tested Raya and whipped over a nice assist to Haaland.
Erling Haaland – 4.5
No shock to see him largely kept out of it in a big game, but had to do better on the rare occasions the ball did come to his feet. Scored a really good headed goal.
Omar Marmoush – 5.5
Provided some of the more dangerous attacking threats City managed to muster, especially from his corner deliveries. Faded out of the game in the second half and came off.
Substitutes
Kevin de Bruyne – 5
Tried to inject a bit more positivity but was easily bypassed when attempting to press.
James McAtee – 5
Had hardly any influence in the middle.

Ortega: Never looked comfortable playing out from the back and played Kovacic into trouble. One good stop at 3-1. 4
Nunes: It looked like Foden stopped passing to him after he ended one too many City attacks. Still a fish out of water. 5
Stones: Not great for the first goal, saw the second deflect in off him and was beaten for the third and fourth. 4
Akanji: Unacceptably bad for the first goal, and had a few more shaky moments. 4
Gvardiol: Took a terrific save from Raya to keep him off the scoresheet and Arsenal's problems did not come down his side. 6
Kovacic: Epitomises a team that is always on the brink of losing possession. Gave it away cheaply for the fourth. 5
Silva: He was most effective at needling Arsenal players, but the midfield fell apart in the second half. 5
Foden: Good for the City equaliser then inexplicably slapped the ball straight to Partey for Arsenal's second. 5
Marmoush: A few lively moments but wasn't able to influence the game. 5
Savinho: Had to pick his moments but put in a superb ball to Haaland for the equaliser. 6
Haaland: Again, didn't see much of the ball but his goal momentarily silenced a fanbase obsessed with him. 6

McAtee (for Foden, 72) Couldn't change the game
De Bruyne (for Marmoush, 72) Couldn't change the game

Stefan Ortega (5/10):
Gave Arsenal a great chance with a silly pass that Havertz wasted. Perhaps should have done better with a couple of goals, too.
Matheus Nunes (5/10):
A weak point defensively and didn't offer enough going forward.
Manuel Akanji (3/10):
Gave the ball away for Odegaard's goal in the worst possible start.
John Stones (4/10):
Set Akanji up for failure with his early pass and put up no resistance for either of Lewis-Skelly's or Havertz's goals.
Josko Gvardiol (5/10):
Had some decent moments but was exposed defensively.
Bernardo Silva (5/10):
Took the sting out of City's attacks by constantly passing backwards.
Mateo Kovacic (7/10):
Put in a solid performance. He fought for the ball and tried his best to get something going.
Omar Marmoush (6/10):
Excellent dead-ball deliveries and a few good passes before he went off after 72 minutes.
Phil Foden (4/10):
His terrible pass sent Partey on his way to a stunning goal, summing up the Englishman's performance.
Erling Haaland (5/10):
Was out of the game until he popped up with the equaliser in the 55th minute.
Savinho (7/10):
Was really lively on the wing and teed up Haaland with a fantastic cross.
Subs & Manager
James McAtee (5/10):
The damage was done by the time he came on, and he was kept quiet.
Kevin De Bruyne (5/10):
Didn't have much of an impact after his 72nd minute introduction.
Pep Guardiola (4/10):
His team were always second best in this game, with his key men kept quiet and others making glaring and costly mistakes.

Player Ratings
Stefan Ortega-3/10: A poor performance from Ortega. He was poor in possession and wasn’t at his best in goal.
Matheus Nunes-4/10: He tried hard again and got forward well. The problem was he didn’t do anything with the possession he had in good areas. He definitely wasn’t Manchester City’s worst player of the evening.
John Stones-6/10: He was his team’s best defender on the night. Although that isn’t saying much.
Manuel Akanji- 2/10: It was Akanji’s error that gave Arsenal the lead in the 2nd minute. It set the tone for his performance over the course of the game.
Josko Gvardiol- 6/10: Like Stones, he did all he good. Did his job in a poor performance from his team.
Mateo Kovacic-4.5/10: He wasn’t City’s worst player but the fact that he isn’t a defensive midfielder cost City on the c,ounter.
Bernardo Silva-4/10: Like Nunes he toiled away as usual but didn’t affect the game as he would’ve liked.
Phil Foden-4/10: If Foden is going to play in midfield, he can’t make the error he did, which gave Arsenal the momentum after Haaland’s equaliser. Not at his best before he was substituted.
Savinho-6/10: Grabbed an assist for Haaland’s equaliser and was probably Manchester City’s biggest attacking threat all game.
Omar Marmoush-5/10: Toiled away up front but couldn’t get into the game. There will be an adjustment period for Marmoush and his teammates to get on the same wavelength.
Erling Haaland-5/10: Grabbed a goal, and if he had the service, he could’ve had a bigger influence on the game.
Substitutes
Kevin De Bruyne-N/A: He came on too late, and there was nothing he could do to affect the result.
James McAtee-N/A: In the same boat as De Bruyne.

Stefan Ortega - 3
A nightmare. It was his hesitancy with the ball at his feet that started the chaos for the Odegaard goal - and his poor pass out led to another golden Arsenal chance that Kai Havertz wasted. Also suspect for Partey, Lewis-Skelly and Nwaneri's strikes. Matheus Nunes - 6
Matheus Nunes - 6
Tried to get forward and put balls in from out wide but is simply not a right-back.
Manuel Akanji - 5
Inexplicable error early on that put his side 1-0 down. Looks out of place in the heart of the defence.
John Stones - 6
Assured on the ball as always but failed to get a block in for Lewis-Skelly's goal.
Josko Gvardiol - 7
Still looks far more of an attacking threat than he does a reliable defender. Regularly offered himself going forward and his first-half header drew a superb save out of David Raya but caught out for the Havertz goal.
Mateo Kovacic - 5
Did well in the first-half to get back and thwart one attack but struggled for impact with or without ball. The shadow of Rodri looms large.
Bernardo Silva - 7
Even in adversity, work rate could not be faulted. One of the few City players to win ball high up the pitch and if nothing else, looked to create.
Phil Foden - 5
Continues to fall way below the standards he set last season. Dispossessed too often and lacked accuracy with his final ball.
Omar Marmoush - 6
One harmless first-half shot drifted way over. His set-piece deliveries were impressive, creating the headed chance for Gvardiol. A slow start to life at City though.
Savinho - 7
When his end product becomes consistent, will become some player. Exciting with the ball at his feet and his expertly judged cross led to the Haaland goal
Erling Haaland - 5
A harsh rating given his powerful header yielded City's only goal but his ineffective first-half display cannot be ignored. Just six touches, and never looked to run the channels despite little ball coming his way. Mercilessly targeted by Arsenal fans and players thoughout. Stay humble, eh?
Substitutes
Kevin de Bruyne (for Marmoush, 72) - 5
Barely had a kick after coming on.
James McAtee (for Foden, 72) - 5
Likewise, little chance to change the tide.

GK - Stefan Ortega - 6/10 Can't be blamed for any of the four goals, but in any match that a goalkeeper concedes that many, it's a day at the office to forget.
RB - Matheus Nunes - 5.5/10 Defence hadn't been on Nunes' CV before this season, and this afternoon certainly suggested why - he looked out of his comfort zone against Trossard and Lewis-Skelly.
CB - John Stones - 6.5/10 Didn't exactly paint himself in glory for the opener, but his buildup play from thereon in was much improved. Unlucky to provide the deflection that sent Partey's shot into the back of the net.
CB - Manuel Akanji - 5.5/10 Gifted Arsenal the lead inside two minutes, getting the ball stuck under his feet before being nicked by Trossard. Definitely improved as the game went on, but his howler was unforgivable.
LB - Josko Gvardiol - 7/10 Definitely City's best defender - but that comes as no surprise this season, both in attack and defence as he carved out opportunities for his teammates and had one himself just for Raya to match him from a corner.
CM - Bernardo Silva - 6/10 The best word to use to describe Silva's performance is 'ineffective'. Ineffective at progressing the ball forward, ineffective when tracking back to help Nunes and Akanji out, and ineffective at making any sort of difference as the Portugal international ghosted.
CM - Mateo Kovacic - 7.5/10 At times, it felt like Kovacic was trying to do everything being asked of his midfield teammates. Tackling, staying in shape, moving the ball forward - the former Chelsea star was acting like a one-man midfield and, to be fair, he did a decent job of it. Rodri would have been proud of his teammates' ability to dictate the middle of the park at times before those around him collapsed.
RW - Savinho - 6.5/10 Was pretty quiet in the first-half, but he provided the delivery that led to Haaland's equaliser. Apart from that, didn't have much of a say in all.
CAM - Omar Marmoush - 6/10 Such is the compact way Arsenal were set up, the new signing really struggled to get a foothold in the game, having just one wayward shot to show after the first hour before being hooked off after 72 minutes.
LW - Phil Foden - 6.5/10 Foden's movement was a rare positive from the first-half, but his teammates rarely found him, and on the odd occasion he picked the ball up in space, he wasn't able to produce his usual moments of magic. His poor pass in the second-half went straight to Partey and led to City's demise.
ST - Erling Haaland - 6/10 Touched the ball twice inside the first four minutes, and then didn't touch the ball again until the 40th minute. But Haaland thrives when others think he's underperforming, as shown by his equaliser early into the second half. That being said, though, he was useless for most of the match.
Sub - James McAtee - 6/10 Better than his midfield partner, but still nothing to write home about. Just an average display from the youngster.
Sub - Kevin De Bruyne - 5.5/10 Did very little to repair a collapsed City outlay, completing just 50% of his passes and none of his long balls.

Stefan Ortega – 6
Highly unlucky for the ball to deflect off his back for the opener. Made a couple of sharp saves to prevent any further Manchester City embarrassment.
Rico Lewis – 8 (MOTM)
Kept Orient on the back foot all game with his control of the match, and forced the first goal with his shot.
Vitor Reis – 6.5
Seemed confident enough to engage in duels on his Manchester City debut, which were of course forthcoming against lower league opposition. Probably planned that he only featured in the first-half.
Ruben Dias – 6.5
Eased back into his first 45 minutes since injury with very little defending to do.
Nico O’Reilly – 7.5
As against Salford City, looked comfortable out of position at left-back. Showed his willingness to hold the ball and to engage in scraps to get it back.
Nico Gonzalez – 5
Far from the debut anyone would have wanted for City’s newest signing, as he was unfairly robbed of the ball before Orient’s opener and was soon forced off with an injury. Get well soon, Nico!
Ilkay Gundogan – 7
Still isn’t as proficient with winning second balls as he used to be, but he played a big part in helping City controlled the game, and offered threat with a few shots from outside the area.
James McAtee – 6.5
The star man of the last round against Salford, but couldn’t get near those levels of importance today. Linked play on occasion but couldn’t really get involved.
Savinho – 7
Always a threat to the opposition with his willingness to run at defenders. End product wasn’t quite to the level it has been recently.
Omar Marmoush – 6.5
Gave more promising signs that he is what City have been missing with regard to runs in behind and positive movement. Didn’t come off for him today with a few missed chances.
Jack Grealish – 8
A better and more aggressive performance than some of his recent disappointing outings. Assisted the winner impressively.
Substitutes
Bernardo Silva – 7
Doubled down on City’s control by dropping into lots of positions to facilitate the possession.
Abdukodir Khusanov – 7
Much more comfortable than his debut, and with the added confidence boost of a goal, regardless of how it came about.
John Stones – 6.5
Calm at the back and near enough totally untroubled.
Kevin de Bruyne – 7
Injected vibrancy straight away and bagged the winning goal.
Phil Foden – 6
Didn’t have a major influence.
