Stefan Ortega – 7 (MOTM) As has been the case far too often for City’s keepers this season, he did his best to keep the opposition at bay, but eventually the chances that they created were finished in a manner that couldn’t be stopped. Rico Lewis – 5.5 Inverted into the midfield but wasn’t much of a presence. Won some challenges but also let Rodgers go on Villa’s first. John Stones – 5 Untroubled when play out from the back but made the key error in pushing up too high during Villa’s opener. Withdrawn at half-time. Manuel Akanji – 5.5 Didn’t shy away from his duel with Duran but came off second best on more occasions than not. The sight of him trying in vain to recover as opposing attackers ran clean through on goal has become unfortunately familiar this term. Josko Gvardiol – 5.5 Linked up fairly well Grealish but couldn’t do anything to stem the Villa tide or to get City flowing going the other way. Missed the best chance the Blues created. Mateo Kovacic – 4 Played a few nice passes but was chasing shadows off the ball. Didn’t get near Boubacar Kamara, Amadou Onana and Youri Tielemans in the Villa midfield. Ilkay Gundogan – 6 Picked up some interesting advanced roles and won a few second balls, but just wasn’t involved enough before his withdrawal. Not the biggest culprit behind the defensive openness this time. Phil Foden – 5 Couldn’t get into the game at all in the first half, and tried to overcompensate by playing ‘hero-ball’ and shooting on sight in the second period. Finally got his goal in the Premier League, but it doesn’t save what was another poor outing. Bernardo Silva – 6 Full of industry but not much innovation. The fact his highlight of the game was a last-ditch block on Rodgers says a lot about his work-rate, but also about his and City’s attacking threat. Erling Haaland – 5 One of the major dilemmas of the season; how much blame can you attribute to Haaland, who has so often been invisible, but also barely has anything created for him? Jack Grealish – 5.5 Saw huge amounts of the ball in the first half and, whilst his control and poise can’t be questioned, you have to wonder what might have happened if the Leroy Sane or Raheem Sterling of yesteryear had been afforded that kind of space. Substitutes Kyle Walker – 5 No big errors but floundered about at the back. Savinho – 5.5 Couldn’t get anything going. Jeremy Doku – N/A |

Ortega: Made more than one outstanding save to stop a grim performance and defeat turning into a rout. 7 Lewis: Looked subdued as he tried to stop City's bleeding, first from the right and then on the left. Lost too many battles. 4 Stones: Stepped out for the first goal after nearly causing a goal in the first minute. Came off at half-time with what must be another injury. 4 Akanji: The body was willing as he returned from injury but he seemed a second short of sharpness, which proved costly at times. 4 Gvardiol: He did at least offer something going forward yet as a result it meant the left side was free for Villa to charge down at will. 4 Kovacic: Has his limitations but did at least try and link defence and attack, recycling possession wherever he could. 5 Gundogan: Another non-event of a game. His biggest contributions were winning free-kicks that led to nothing. 4 Foden: Had a few shots at Martinez that were never in any danger of going in, but struggled to link with teammates. Consolation goal. 5 Silva: Outsmarted and outfought by Villa players with no impact on the right side to cause any problems. 4 Grealish: Booed from the off but the only member of City's attack that looked like they wanted to do something positive. 6 Haaland: Got no service again. Tried to be found but a losing battle as City created nothing. 5 Substitutes Walker (for Stones, 46): One of his quieter performances this season but still couldn't change the game. 5 Savinho (for Gundogan, 73) Dribbled well for the goal. 6 Doku (for Kovacic, 84) No time. |

Stefan Ortega (6/10): Kept City in it early on with his fine saves from Duran and Pau Torres. Couldn't be faulted for either goal but a little suspect with his feet. Rico Lewis (4/10): Kept the ball well and made a tactical foul to prevent a second goal. Moved to central midfield after the break but it only made Villa more dominant in the middle. John Stones (4/10): Made his first appearance in a month and it showed as he was hooked at half-time. Manuel Akanji (4/10) Played Rogers and Duran onside for the first goal. Decent on the ball, playing lots of switches to Grealish, but made rash challenges. Josko Gvardiol (4/10): Headed over the bar with a half chance. Struggled defensively yet again. Bernardo Silva (4/10): Couldn't tame Villa's counters and had no ideas going forward. Ilkay Gundogan (4/10): Couldn't get close to Villa's creator-in-chief Tielemans and had no cutting edge in attack. Mateo Kovacic (4/10): Ineffective at trying to plug the gaps in the middle Jack Grealish (6/10): Most of City's play went through him, amid relentless booing from fans of his boyhood club. But he couldn't spark any creativity. Erling Haaland (3/10): More anonymous than his last appearance at Villa Park, when he fractured his foot. Had just 18 touches - the fewest of any player who started the game and never looked like causing a threat. Phil Foden (5/10): Responsible for City's brightest move with a marauding dribble and shot in the first half but it was just a flash and he didn't offer much else until his consolation goal in added time. Subs & Manager Kyle Walker (4/10): Brought on to shore up the defence but Villa only grew more confident with him on the pitch. Savinho (4/10): Didn't look like ever making a difference and hardly got on the ball. Jeremy Doku (N/A): Brought on in the 84th minute. Pep Guardiola (4/10): His gameplan, which seemed to consist of letting Grealish do all the work, fell flat and he had no response. More injuries (Ruben Dias, Ederson) are not helping but he is running out of ideas. |

Stefan Ortega-9/10: Manchester City’s man-of-the-match, and if it wasn’t for Ortega, it could’ve been a lot worse than 2-1. His first two saves of the game were outstanding. Rico Lewis-6/10: He never stopped trying. Defensively, he was caught out at times, but he never gave up. John Stones-5/10: Substituted at halftime and played like a player who’d been out of action for a while. Manuel Akanji-5.5/10: Battled on manfully but you could tell he wasn’t fully fit. Josko Gvardiol-3/10: His poor form continued. His error after 20 seconds set the tone for his performance. Gvardiol’s form is a major concern. Mateo Kovacic-5/10: Swam against the tide in midfield but was swamped in the end. Tried hard but couldn’t affect the game as he would’ve liked. Ilkay Gundogan-3/10: A poor performance from Gundogan. He couldn’t get into the game and his lack of legs was exposed by Villa’s energetic midfield. Bernardo Silva- 4/10: I can’t fault his effort, but his end product is lacking. He isn’t a right winger and shouldn’t be playing there. Phil Foden- 7/10: He was Manchester City’s most dangerous attacking player over the 90 minutes. He took his goal well but resembled Foden at his best at times today. Jack Grealish-6.5/10: Was City’s most dangerous player in the first half but drifted out of the game in the second half. Erling Haaland-3/10: He started the game with energy but that faded as his service was non-existent. I’m not sure what Haaland is meant to do in a team that doesn’t play the ball to his strengths. Substitutes Kyle Walker-4.5/10: Came at halftime but didn’t do a lot right or a lot wrong. Savinho-6/10: Set up Foden’s goal with a driving run. He needs to start more often from here. Jeremy Doku- N/A: Not on long enough to mark. |

Player Ratings
Stefan Ortega – 6 Was not frequently tested by Everton, but did well with ball distribution when required. Couldn’t do anything for the goal. Rico Lewis – 5 Looked comfortable at right-back, especially when City were playing from behind, despite a few nervy moments. Took his chances with driving the ball forward but focused mainly on defensive duties, made a few good blocks. Manuel Akanji – 5 Should have done better to clear Abdoulaye Doucouré’s cross, practically gifted a chance to Iliman Ndiaye to score the equaliser. Nathan Ake – 6.5 Looked stable in the defensive line-up, made good blocks, but concerns over another injury Josko Gvardiol – 6 Played high up on the left flank, did well to help create chances, and nearly scored a goal. But it made him vulnerable with his defensive role inside the City half. Mateo Kovacic – 6 Composed in his defensive-midfield role, did solid work helping the defence and took long-range shots but would hope to see more of them trouble the keeper. Bernardo Silva – 6 Scored the opener, missed a huge chance. Sums up the Manchester City team at the moment. Phil Foden – 6.5 He is nowhere near his best, but Foden is slowly growing more assured on the ball. The England international made brave plays and looked hungry to create chances whenever he found the ball at his feet. Savinho – 6 Best attacked in the Manchester City side, struggled with his final third, but was brave and skilful with his run-ins. Troubled his defender and found his way past Everton regularly. Erling Haaland – 4 He missed clear chances, but his penalty miss best described his awful performance. There was plenty of service, but the Norwegian couldn’t convert any. Jeremy Doku – 6 Helped create the first goal and should do better in finding his teammates in front of the goal. Substitutes Kevin De Bruyne – 6 Did not impact the game as much as he would have liked and couldn’t help Haaland find redemption Jahmai Simpson-Pusey – N/A Ilkay Gundogan – N/A |

Ortega: Not much to say. Had very little to do other than pick the ball out of the net for a finish he couldn't do anything about. 6 Lewis: Bright at right-back, and a quieter game than recent efforts in the right way. A reminder of his talents at right-back when not flogged relentlessly. 6 Akanji: Ended up kneeing the ball to Ndiaye for the Everton goal and that wasn't the first time he was too casual at the back. 5 Ake: He brought composure to the backline, allowing Gvardiol to move up on the left with confidence. But then he got injured again. 6 Gvardiol: Hit the post with an early header and he remains one of City's biggest attacking threats but he was too careless in his own half. 5 Kovacic: Looked better than Gundogan has in the holding role, although for the few shots that troubled Pickford too many were easily blocked. 6 Silva: Scored an important goal, missed an important chance. Once again a decent performance where the result puts the focus on the negatives. 6 Foden: Even below his best, he still wanted the ball and tried to make things happen whenever he could. More encouragement after Villa Park. 7 Doku: Gave Silva the ball for the opening goal but more frustration for Haaland and his teammates at the way he used possession. 5 Savinho: Still doesn't offer enough in the final third for all the promising play that gets him there, but the penalty should have been enough for City. 6 Haaland: He is there to win games with his goals and he fluffed his lines from the penalty spot to spoil a display that had been okay. 4 Substitutes De Bruyne (for Doku, 75) No rescue act today. 6 Gundogan (for Kovacic, 85) No time. Simpson-Pusey (for Ake, 85) No time. |

Stefan Ortega (5/10): Didn't see much of the ball, couldn't be blamed for the goal. Rico Lewis (4/10): Left Ndiaye unguarded. Still lacks authority in defence and not making up for it when he is on the ball. Manuel Akanji (4/10): Flapped at the cross towards Ndiaye. Struggled at times to deal with Calvert-Lewin's hold-up play. Josko Gvardiol (5/10): An asset going forward, hitting the post early on. Not entirely comfortable defensively. Nathan Ake (7/10): The one defender who knew what he was doing. Made two great tackles on Calvert-Lewin. Bernardo Silva (5/10): Sat deeper than usual although also got forward. His goal had a stroke of luck and he should have buried his second chance after Foden's dream pass instead of shanking wide with the outside of his boot. Mateo Kovacic (5/10): Couldn't stamp his authority on the midfield battle and came second to Idrissa Gueye. Phil Foden (8/10): Looked closer to the player he was last season, playing some sublime defence-splitting passes which his team-mates couldn't make the most of. Jeremy Doku (5/10): Set up the goal and often looked a threat but gave the ball away too easily and didn't try hard enough to get it back in the build-up to Everton's equaliser. Erling Haaland (3/10): Wasn't sharp enough to make the most of Foden's lovely passes and his lack of confidence was summed up when he couldn't beat Pickford from the spot and was then caught offside in the second phase of play. Savinho (5/10): His trickery often amounted to nothing apart from when he earned the penalty. Subs & Manager Kevin De Bruyne (5/10): Tried to make something happen in the final third when he teed up Haaland. Jahmai Simpson-Pusey (N/A): Replaced Ake with five minutes left. Ilkay Gundogan (N/A): Brought on in the 85th minute but couldn't help the search for the winner. Pep Guardiola (4/10): Another uninspiring game for the serial-winning coach and his changes came too late. |

Stefan Ortega - 6 Could have done nothing about Ndiaye's goal, with the blame falling on his defenders. Helped to build attacks from the back with some accurate passing. Not much else to shout about. Rico Lewis - 5 Was caught napping for Ndiaye's equaliser, failing to get close enough to prevent a shot on goal. Did well enough on the ball but needs to work on the defensive side of his game. Manuel Akanji - 5 Got his bearings all wrong in attempting to clear the ball seconds before the equaliser. Failed to offer much in possession. Not his best performance. Nathan Ake - 6 Was far too static in the build-up to Everton's leveller and should have done more to prevent the cross. Otherwise did okay without setting the world alight. Josko Gvardiol - 5 Rattled the post with a header from close range early on. Gave the ball away on too many occasions with some sloppy passing. Not great. Mateo Kovacic - 6 Took up the Rodri role and kept things ticking in midfield, but failed to prevent the cross which led to Ndiaye's goal. Nearly scored the winner from outside the area, firing a volley wide. Bernardo Silva - 6 Showed good athleticism to stretch his leg out and open the scoring, but a deflection meant it went down as an own goal. Missed a golden chance to double his tally, firing wide with the outside of his boot. Phil Foden - 6 Used his range of passing to carve out chances from deeper positions. Was a bigger threat in the final third, dictating the pace of his team's attacks, but was unable to make the difference. Savinho - 6 Asked questions of Everton with some fancy footwork and direct running. Won the penalty and gave Vitaly Mykolenko a hard time but struggled with the final ball. Jeremy Doku - 6 Created the opening goal with an exquisite pass which took several defenders out of the game. Was otherwise quiet with City struggling to make the most of all their possession. Erling Haaland - 4 Wasted two big chances either side of the break before taking an awful penalty. Looked devoid of confidence and is now without a goal in four successive home games. Not good enough. Substitutes Kevin De Bruyne - 6 Worked hard to create chances but was unable to influence the result. Ilkay Gundogan - 5 Maintained the tempo as City pushed for a late winner to no avail. Jahmai Simpson-Pusey - 5 Came on for the last few minutes and did okay in defence. |

GK - Stefan Ortega - 6/10 Not much he could have done about the goal due to the manner in which it was hit with accuracy and in the far corner. Aside from that, he had little to do in the contest. RB - Rico Lewis - 6/10 Played in his much more favourable position due to Kyle Walker not being in the squad. Looked comfortable in both attack and defence, where he tracked back to block and intercept Everton attacks. CB - Manuel Akanji - 5/10 A poor performance from the Austrian centre-back who was hardly involved in the contest. In the air, he was inefficient, losing out to his opponent more often than not, and lost possession regularly. CB - Nathan Ake - 6/10 Arguably Man City's best centre-back on the day, in which he made multiple - and vital - clearances, while he was also stout in both his aerial and ground duels. Saw lots of the ball, and got back and defended Calvert-Lewin well, even if he did look slower at times. LB - Josko Gvardiol - 5/10 Looked a threat on set-pieces as he has done for large parts of this season. Almost opened the scoring with a header, but was denied by the goal post. Wasn't afraid to get forward and shoot, registered a handful of shots, though all were off-target. CM - Bernardo Silva - 6/10 While the opening goal didn't go down as his own, he perhaps deserved it to be given to him with him looking very bright in the early stages of the game. However, he fizzled out as the game went on, and blundered a very good chance in acres of space to double their lead before Everton equalized just mere minutes later. CM - Phil Foden - 7/10 Looked a huge threat deployed in the No. 10 position, and created a plethora of chances for his teammates, through long balls and crosses. He also played in the most key passes of any of his teammates. CM - Mateo Kovacic - 6/10 Orchestrated his team from central midfield, and did some hard yards in getting back to defend. However, he did get dispossessed far too often. RW - Savinho - 7/10 Was quiet in the first half, but in the second-half he burst into life, and won his side a penalty in the early stages of the game. Registered a handful of shots throughout, but couldn't find a way past Pickford. Looked the most threatening to find/create a winner in the second half. ST - Erling Haaland - 4/10 Got in some good positions, particularly in the first half, but couldn't take advantage of the opportunities he created. Saw his penalty saved by Pickford, and his follow-up header was miles offside. LW - Jeremy Doku - 6/10 His dynamic play down the left flank was threatening Everton's back-line all day, and his pass to Silva to set up the opener was weighted perfectly. Very positive with his play, often dropping the shoulder to create, but Everton always had men tightly marking him. Sub - Kevin De Bruyne - 6/10 There was only room on the bench for the Belgian, but coming on with 15 minutes left to play, he didn't have the impact on the game that many perhaps expected from him. Sub - Ilkay Gundogan - N/A Not on the field long enough to impact the game. Sub - Jahmai Simpson-Pusey - N/A Not on the field long enough to impact the game. |
