According to this , RM12k is not enough for young family.

QUOTE
One of them is Caroline Wong, who believes her combined household income of RM12,000 is not enough to sustain a living in Penang, famed for its beaches as much as it electronics manufacturing sector.

The 34-year-old clerk lives with her husband, a sales manager and their young daughter are starting to feel the pinch despite earning an income that was once sufficient to live comfortably.

“We are always eating in at home now and we can no longer afford to buy goods like branded clothing,” Wong told The Malaysian Insider in Penang's capital city George Town.

According to Wong, every month the couple have to fork out RM4,000 for the house and car, RM1,500 on food and another RM1,500 on daycare, baby food and milk for their child.

On top of that, there is RM750 on insurance and a family medical card, RM700 on petrol, RM600 on phone bills, WiFi and broadband, RM120 on Astro, RM140 on water and electricity bills and RM110 on a weekly housekeeper.

“We put aside RM500 every month for road tax and car insurance. Come May next year, we will have to spend another RM1,500 a month on our second child when it arrives,” Wong said.

Her tale is just one of many who are living in Penang, the country’s most expensive city.

a great yuppie lifestyle, a designer suite at vibrant Mont Kiara or equivalent, a decent car (varies on requirement, some think Honda/Toyota is decent enough)
then yes, RM12k/month Gross salary is pretty much just-nice.

But if want to be able to save up money to have a sustainability of 1 year -> this mean, u r ok to leave your job for a year (whether got retrenched or just for fun taking a year break) and maintain the lifestyle
Then, RM12k nett

RM12k nett or RM12k gross? A lot of difference. If gross, then a family with 1 child can barely make it. Also depends on how one want to survive. If merely survive like a cat, then enough, but if want to live with a dignity of a human and socializing, then not enough.

Therefore, RM 12k, is beyond surviving. Its a life of luxury, when comparing to surviving.

I find it silly for anyone suggesting that RM 12k isn't enough to survive.

Even RM 8k is still more than sufficient to survive. No matter what, there are people surviving with much less, but with more financial burdens.

Oh come on... Its more than enough to survive. Nothing could justify as saying RM 8k is not enough for surviving. Its just that they want to fulfill their luxury needs, which a bit silly. Unless of course, you are mass producing babies.

Estimate the husband uses a lot as he is doing SALES.

Not all salesman can claim the bill from the company, it may be included in the take-home as "comm benefit" so included in the RM12k.

Since she is only lowly educated I estimate the hubby makes majority of the 12k.......at least around 8-10k. So yes, I'd estimate salesman benefits are included in the household income.

I don't believe so.

8k is enough to SURVIVE, sure, but when you consider that the median household income in Malaysia is closer to RM2k, 4x the median household income shouldn't be reduced to merely surviving!

Can u rephrase that , doesn't seemed relevant to my post at all?

If u r asking why cannot enjoy the yuppie lifestyle and yet being sustainable (for not having to work for a year under any circumstances )
Can, if RM12k/month income nett

Cannot, if RM12k/month income gross,
if gross, means before deducting tax, epf, insurance, car loan, house loan etc. Have to either have less saving, and maybe able to have sustainability of 3-6months instead of a year , or compromised one another, lifestyle/saving

So what r u asking, wanted to have RM 12k gross and live the formal? Hard.

if maintaining that sort of lifestyle, 20k also tak cukup lar. what more sustainability?
what i meant was don't go for the mont kiara condos, imported car & food. and what's living formal?
for me, yuppie lifestyle is going to starbucks for mamak, eating at some franchise e.g. fish&co, manhattan fish market, minimum fast food for meals, buying zara, h&m, esprit, g2000.

your example is more towards the affluent or lifestyle of the rich & famous. or maybe i'm really just dirt poor laugh.gif

RM5,000 Car (BMW 5 series who want to drive Toyota nowadays/)
RM3,000 Condo (Must stay good area - yuppies living)
RM2,500 daycare (daycare, baby food and milk for their child. Must sent to premier tuition center)
RM1,500 (Insurance RM2mil /medic card)
RM900 Petrol
RM700 Phone Bill
Assteruk & Berukband (RM350)
RM300 Water & Electricity (AC al1 room)
Food (RM3000 - RM100 per days and twice a week at porch restaurant)

How about those earning below than RM2k household per month. They still have own roof, 3 meals a day, education, etc). She must understand what is basic and what is luxury.

Condo is about right for a 700k condo.
Car is a 5 series on a 5 year loan.

Oh, forgot to add. Common definition of nett is take home salary minus tax and epf. If minus commitments and all, that's called happy/jolly money.

In Malaysia, food is very expensive if u want to eat good food, like Australian beef, wagyu, fresh oysters, escargots and Norwegian chilled flew in daily unfrozen king salmon , and all the premium food ... Food that you get from isetan supermarket, or Hock Choon Jalan ampang. Cooking and preparing em in your custom made marble top kitchen, light some candles,  Sitting at high floor condo with infinity pool, overview of KL skyline, a bottle of wine, and then some espresso from the Krups coffee maker with fresh whole-bean to brew....

Ahhhh... What a life , life is good in KL , if u have got money  laugh.gif  laugh.gif

People who reach that sort of pinnacle are only busy working, no time for daydreaming.

And if nothing happen then can survive, but if something happen the 12k is definitely not enough.

Like my friend the daughter broken, and the bone came out, got to goverment hospital, and they say need to wait for few day before can operate due to long queue.

In this situation, you will rather wait or go to private?

combined household income 12k doesn't mean taking home 12k.
after minus tax and epf most probable left around 9k++

House already makan 4k
balance 5k will be not much given the lifestyle of homemaker working as sales manager.

Only peasant in /k/ will always "WTF" with 5k not enuf.

Even my combined household income 10k bring home around 8k++ also kena pinch now.

Oh come on... Its more than enough to survive. Nothing could justify as saying RM 8k is not enough for surviving. Its just that they want to fulfill their luxury needs, which a bit silly. Unless of course, you are mass producing babies.

8-12k is a senior manager salary.
do u expect a senior manager only being barely able to survive ? of course not. its expected that a senior manager should be able to live a life of relative comfort , n able to afford occasional luxury.
if malaysia's cost of living is so damn high that a senior manager is only able to survive, then what about those junior employees? they wont even be able to survive at all !

Uncle, RM 8k, is more than enough to live a life of relative comfort. Not luxurious, but comfortable.

You are only a senior manager. Nothing more. You resign, company can easily replace you. Law of capitalism.

Much bullshit. My household combined around ~8K, and we can survive with slightly more to save.

Only 1 car to pay for. Phone bills - we all use top up only. No need postpaid RM60 monthly and only utilise (not even) half of what you pay for.

Internet bills RM150 standard Unifi. Electric monthly ~200, now lesser cos rainy season, temperature can drop til low 20s. Change your lifestyle, stupid family. Got 12k some more complain not enough lel.

Gimme 12K and I'll be able to buy another house already.

Why people cannot even differentiate between "survive" and "not enough".

If they say 12k per month cannot survive that is definitely bullshit. But if they say 12k per month not enough, then that's possible. After all, 120k per month also maybe not enough for some people.

Very restricted.. by today's standard if there is anything around rm1k or 2k.. If i want it i usually don't need to consider much. Do not want to restrict myself to saving just for a certain item. Should start finding ways to increase earning capabilities.. Again it's really different depending on individual..

1st - I didn't call you a kid because of your out-of-nowhere reasoning, but because your nick is kid.

2nd - obviously i wasn't talking about YOU, I was referring to Caroline Wong who biatch every goddamn thing about her expense is bla bla bla bla while contributing punny to the household income, doing nothing to improve herself but spending unreasonably. and who the hell cares about you and your wife. you and your wife aint the main subject here. read the first post. perhaps you need to reread the first post to know the context. unsure.gif

3rd - People with ambitions drive themselves towards whatever goals they are trying to achieve, not hoping for others to turn around their life, b****ng wont change anything. whistling.gif

sorry bro that you did not use condoms, then you pancut dalam, then you get kids.

dont get mad. like i said, with proper planning, you need not spend unnecessary money.

is having kids a necessity? need to have kids to only know what financial pain is?

mind you, i've been walked that path before, certainly experienced the worst of financial times. i learnt how to spend wisely for that experience, hence I know how to properly spend my money. i don't need to have KIDS to teach me about financial expenditure.

and prepaid is the way to go. I work in telcos, I know how they suck money with postpaids. Hence, I prefer not to use postpaid. Unifi - 149 is standard. what you expect me to write, RM28371238907 for internet?

you're the one getting offended and shits. not me. if you were to slap me, i would slap you another 10 times back for not being able to speak rationally on a discussion. hahahahaha 2-inchers.
and you're not a parent/muslim/whatever. so who are you to talk about having kids, again? i don't really get your sense here now.
*
u want to talk about rational ? then next time u better think twice before claiming that 8k is enough to survive.

some more asking ppl to ""change lifestyle, stupid family??". u are the idiot who thinks that a family is just husband and wife , without taking into account children.

at least i am mature enough to realize that the term "family" often implies having children.

even though i dont have children now doesnt mean i wont have in the future. as you yourself said "proper planning" is the key.

Read the original news again, and read it if you haven't. They do buy branded items. How much does an original Hush Puppies polo-T cost you? If you buy 3 pieces, easily 200-300 already.

Not just that, I believe you entirely did not read the article. It says "COMBINED INCOME", well, put aside the children as this parent is only mid 30s. will the kids spend like how teenagers spend? their kids are easily, at most, 10 years old. what can they do with their parents' money, or do their kids think like us, buy iPad lah, iPhone lah.

no - but chances are the parents are the one who purchases it for them.

not to mention, is changing lifestyle hard? I think it is for you. Want to tunjuk gaya ada wang. "Biar papa asal bergaya" eh? ; again, you have no kids like you said, I now don't quite why you're speaking as if you have a family (with kids) and is going through hard times?

don't self proclaim about maturity. I have a family as well, but they're not my kids, they're my siblings and parents. That's also family - which I am saying is that, I do not have any kids, so yeah, I am good at planning, eh. don't simply put your penis into a vajayjay then regret having kids. control your mind, don't let your penis control you. k?

you sound just like umno, always asking us to change our lifestyle whenever subsidies are cut, or prices increase.
but i put it to you , why shouldnt a middle class family be able to enjoy the small luxuries of life ? is an ipad really such a luxurious item that is priced out of the reach of even the middle class family ?
the problem in malaysia is the high rate of inflation, plus our low curency exchange rate.

its a simple question.
*
I don't want to layan you already bro. I think you're just like some of my customers, mentally challenged.

did i this, did i that, when you obviously did.

You asked me to watch out.

Then watch out for what? I asked, are you gonna come up my back and penetrate me in the anus? ; i was asking.

then you said I am a closet gay.

Then what should I expect if you said "you better watch out" ? that you will pop out from somewhere wearing screamo mask shouting WHAZAAAAAPP?

Or, you're really mentally challenged, you couldn't put these pieces together, you need me to put the whole story together in one post for you to understand? - I think the latter. Mr Soo Tien Ann, I hereby, declare you as mentally challenged as you're incapable of putting pieces together, and is not fit to speak rationally in a discussion, where in a random time, you lose your temper, go crazy, post nonsensical nonsense.

Bullied or not, I summoned them to look at your stupidity. Not for them to bash you back, for them to bash you back is their option, their choice to do so, I did not request them to do it. Now suck it up, go and take your medicine to control your mind. I think you haven't took any today.

what are you on about ? i advise you to debate with logic, not emotion.

anyway, back to topic.
you sound just like umno, always asking us to change our lifestyle whenever subsidies are cut, or prices increase.
but i put it to you , why shouldnt a middle class family be able to enjoy the small luxuries of life ? is an ipad really such a luxurious item that is priced out of the reach of even the middle class family ?
the problem in malaysia is the high rate of inflation, plus our low curency exchange rate.
what are your views on this ?

It is not wrong for them to enjoy a bit of luxury. However, if you're in the position of slight hard times, financially, are you still going to buy luxury items?

If 12K is considered middle income earners, and is not able to survive. Others earning between 4-10K how? Did they die? No they didn't.

Inflation is indeed high, however, with control you can save. You need not go out to eat with family every weekend. Take a weekend off, go for recreational at the park instead. And currency exchange don't entirely affect if you're working within the country. It does, however, affect the nation's inflation rate of course.

Like I always said, with control and proper planning of your budget, you can save. 12K is a lot per month - unless they're referring to a year. Which is already less than my salary per year.

i hate inflation.

most of the time, im able to save up 95-96% of my salary for investments, and 98.5% of my salary + net passive income/dividends for investments

if prices go up, i might only be able to save up 94.7-95.7% of my salary for investments....

nolah. im just not a big spender.
usually monthly i spend 150-200 on food cuz i cook, maybe 150 on bills/unifi and maintainence, maybe 30 for phone. and 100+ on misc stuffs.
My room rental fully covers my interest payment for my house, and on top of that i can share all my bills. hence, most of my income i can do re-investments. so usually every year i will have 100k to spare from my salary, abit more from bonus, and maybe and 100-150k to spare from my asb dividends/unit trusts/net rental income so i keep on buying on or two new condo each year. sometimes on 50% downpayment if its sub-sale.

as long as i keep my spending low, my passive income can keep on growing.
